@nariusseldon and how do you keep track on all players/bosses' positions
  • LyrianLyrian Member UncommonPosts: 412
Situational awareness mostly, plus putting tabs and markers on the key actors of the raid.

It depends on the game, but always a good idea is to make squads and give them squadleaders you trust, ask them for feedback and updates, also you should yell at everyone so they respect your authority!

    By looking at the mini-map?

Is it so hard to say "player A, B & C, go left where the boss is"?

    Patience.

The number one attribute needed for a successful raid is patience.  If people are too anxious/pressed for time/impatient...that's when the mistakes, hard feelings, boots, wipes and ill will starts to happen.

I'd rather raid with x number of people who have no voice chat, no experience and no skill, but have the patience to devote an entire evening to a raid, then x number of TS/vent hooked pros who have "M4D 5K1LLZ," who complain that the raid isn't going fast enough.

Better to spend four hours and complete the raid than to quit, because you couldn't get it done in an hour and have to start over.

I'd like to see new systems, for example captains can place markers on a map for sergeants and sergeants can place markers on the map for their men, say a circle for ranged, a circle for melee. The further up the command you get, the more the UI is about the map and the less its about the world view.  Generals would be just watching the map for the entire battle, directing traffic while infantry would be playing more traditionally, only seeing their marker as a circle on the ground.

It would be interesting to have something similar to the commander in Natural selection 1 & 2, a person that co-ordinates the players during larger raids...

Co-ordination is interesting and by offering a good mechanic for the players to do so they could increase the difficulty and make things more interesting.

If you are in a position where one person needs to be responsible for the position of 10+ people, then there is something wrong.

Usually when there are multiple objectives at the same time, the voice chat is split into groups.

In Guild Wars 2, there is a 120 person raid with 3 simultaneous bosses. What happens there is you split voice chat into 3 groups (one per boss). In each group you further have 3-4 people making the calls, each responsible for a different thing.

It really depends on the situation though. If there was a 500 man raid where all that needs to happen is every single person attacking at the same time, you could have 500 people in the same voice channel with one leader shouting "NOW" in the right moment.

Every game is so completely different when it comes to this sort of thing that you'll have to take a different approach to each title.  Leading a 24 man raid in Age of Conan is absolutely different from FC'ing a 200 man fleet in EVE Online.

The first bit of advice is to know what every class or spec tree can and can't do.  You don't need to know every single bit of math inside and out like a class professional, but you do need to know why you're assigning a Guardian to tank Stinky instead of a Dark Templar, and not just because that's how it's always been done.

The second bit of advice, and the most important, is to know your people.  I won't give a window licker an important job and I won't insult my best tank by putting him on adds unless the adds are the most challenging part.  If you don't know who your elbow munchers or game changers are, then you're already doing it wrong.

The third bit of advice is that you need to purge people who can't handle the content quickly and effectively.  That person who treats the game as a social club, or is only playing to find a potential future mate?  Let them hang out in guild and chat, and let them know that they won't be in your raids until they take things seriously.  That person who shows up to the raid on Friday night bellowing about how drunk they are?  Let them know that they are welcome to raid when they sober up.  That guy you can hear hitting a bong in the background on voice comms?  Don't give him anything that requires a quick reaction time.

Fourth, Democracy is a great way to run a real life nation and a terrible way to run a raid or a guild.  You are a dictator and people can do what you say or they can GTFO and find another raid.  Don't be a dick about it, but be firm.  You can be a firm dick, but I suggest you do that sort of thing after the raid.

A democracy will slow shit down to a total crawl while everyone in the raid tries to get their vote.  There's a damn good reason that military's aren't run democratically.  Take advice into consideration, and if they have a new and great way to kill a boss, then have them tell you after the raid so you aren't wasting 23 other people's time.

That is why i don't raid anymore. If i have any patience, it is not for video games.

Voice chat isn't a requirement to have coordination, if anything it's a distraction. We did raids with 70+ player in Everquest from all over Europe, many who could barely speak English, and we had extremely organized raids.

It helps if everyone knows their role before the raid.

Raid leader and Guild leader should be different people. The raid leader should be able to focus on the raid and should not have to deal with the guild during a raid.

Force every guild member to lead at least 1 easier raid so they understand how raids organisation works. It creates respect between members. Do not announce when you let regular members lead raids, do it sporadically on easier raids, it forces people to pay attention and learn the strategy themselves.

Every class should have an officer. All communication should go through officers, no one should address the guild or raid leader directly during raids. Officers are your noise filters.

Guildies not in the raid, are not allowed to communicate with people in the raid. Anyone willing to join the raid talks to a designed person responsible for the raid make-up.

Do frequent AFK checks, if there are people who can't be bothered to pay attention, they shouldn't be in the raid.

Practice, get to know your guildies, make them group together and integrate new people as soon as possible.

I'd like to see this entire game play feature just go away.  Vanish for ever.  But that's just me.
