imageElder Scrolls Online | ESO Hate | MMORPG

The Elder Scrolls Online sucks, it does not live up to its hype, it’s not an Elder Scrolls game, PvE is lack luster, someone stole my chest, end game is boring, ESO needs . Yes, ESO has flaws, not a game in the world is flawless. In this week’s column I’m going to take a look at the ESO / MMO community and try and explain why they have so much hate towards such a fantastic game.

It is the only MMORPG I can play and I've tried dozens over the years. I enjoy the combat. It's not perfect, but it is light years more enjoyable for me than the WOW-style click and watch combat. The regions feel different. Some of the quests are really well done. I love the PVP and personally never tire of the Cyrodiil section of the game. Are there mistakes? Of course, for instance not having player housing is beyond stupid, there is not enough focus on single player experiences in the expansions, there are too few factions to join, it falls into the kill-level-kill-level grind like every other MMORPG, and so on. Yet here I am many months later and I keep coming back. I hate the samey looping dungeons though and would love to see them go over each of them to give them more personality and a little more depth.

Remember trying it when it went b2p and something else came up and never did much with it.  Lately Ive been trying (unsuccessfully) to get in to Wildstar.  Maybe it is time to get back in to ESO and check out the Orsinum DLC when it hits.

It is one of three big-budget MMO's that is different enough to keep me interested. The other two being GW2 and EVE. I can not play another bog-standard themepark MMO for more than a few weeks before my eyes start to glaze over while playing.

Not sure I see a strong connection in the write up to the title. Meh.

I "hate" that  much like every other game that tries to be different ant present players with options....there are clearly OP setups in terms of weapon/class combos.

Make great, tightly defined, well-tuned classes and you don't have these issues.

There are other ways to present freedom and creativity in builds.  When your very class pigeonholes you into a specific build from the get-go though...you've just done the exact thing you were trying NOT to do.

Article fits into the grand scheme this website has picked up.

I love the game, but it's missing so many basic MMO elements, like viewing armour and weapons before you buy and stuff. A group finder would be great also, since the LFG tool is horrible. Hopefully the cross faction LFG will fix that :)

This is a well written rant. I guess everyone is human in the end.

One of the biggest issues with ESO isn't that it is not a well designed game. It plays well and is fun. The issue is more that it was designed to play like a single player RPG and many players treat it as such. It does not play and feel like an MMO. So many tools are lacking at even the basic 1st year of any MMO.

Chat is completely horrid without addons to assist you and the same for guild management (even addons can't fix the missing features for guilds). As far as the being in 5 guilds to make use of trading.... most players just use their stores to list items. I have been in many trading guilds and guild chat is very quiet and most the time people aren't trying to sell anything, so ZOS did not succeed in getting people... "to broaden your scope and speak to players". Even trade chat in zone channels have dwindled. Who wants to spend half of their gaming time each day trying to find people to buy items?

Update 6 and 7 fixed a lot of performance and gaming issues, but most of them were issues that should have been fixed before the game even released! Unfortunately I believe too many of the MMO community have lost interest in the game and with Orsinium just going further down the single player RPG rabbit hole I doubt many will come back.

I don't mind the AH setup and the ease of waypoints makes it easy to go around looking at other guilds for what you need.

The whole problem with ESO is the developers do not work along with the community. I laugh at how they have a ask us anything thread yet they have hardly answered any questions from it. Plus when they do it isn't the most popular one's. Then you have the bugs, from launcher (only use their launcher on patch days then the eso.exe file on all others) to the end game. The vet system was suppose to be removed (devs told us so) but so far that isn't happening.

Or how they told us PC/MAC players they were never going to go F2P and would close the game down before doing so. Well they got it a little right they went B2P and the whole time they were setting up the B2P model with crown store they were telling us they were working on major bugs then finding out even later they were actually working on consoles. So a year passes and then we find out they lied to us. One thing I will give them create for is getting rid of the bots. Early life of the game you couldn't craft because the bots were eating up the resources.

I will touch on ESO plus as something that really hit the loyal players hard, they never gave enough to show how they respected us for paying monthly subs while they lied to us about B2P and consoles to where we keep the income coming in that whole time. A senche and a pet just wasn't enough, but then they sold senche's in the crown store just with different skins. So if you see someone riding a striped senche tell them thank you or you wouldn't be playing ESO.

Then you have ESO live, what can I say about that but they never answer the realy questions have asked and wanted answered to this day. They joke and laugh on that show and believe me a lot ofplayers feel like they are laughing at us. But in reality they are just laughing at inside jokes they never tell us about.

Only other thing I can say about ESO and Zinemax is nothing is their fault, they always blame most issues on our ISP or our systems. For example the patch before last one it really scred up the launcher for a lot of people yet it was always the same response it's your ISP. Finally today they got it fixed oh and would you expect some update telling us it wasn't our fault but theirs. Aother thing about their launcher is this is the only online game I ever played where they never update the launcher. I find that amazing.

I could go on but why it will not make things better and Zenimax will keep going the way they are. Console players yelling for text chat and Zenimax ignoring them and refusing to even answer them when they ask why. I could bring up problems with Imperial City, PVP and so on but it just will not change a thing, it really does seem liek they want the game to fail and NO I do not want it too. But I do want it to get better for both PVE and PVP players.

@SBFord nice write up and maybe the few things you brought up they may listen too. We need more people pointing out their failures so maybe it may wake them up.

Save ESOTU, help make it the game it should of been!

ESO improved so much with the last few major updates  that it is a strong choice out there.

Besides the obvious missing features (like the brotherhood/thieves/enforcer mechanic) the only thing that drives me crazy about ESO now is the tab targeting and enemy tagging hidden behind real time action combat. It is a terrible system but it can be improved if they manage to make it more realistic so some attacks dont clip through enemies and only hit/damage the targeted one. That is beyond silly.

Other than that, i like it way more than what we got at launch.

It's not a bad game.  The graphics look good and they have a lot of good ideas.  They also have a lot of strange ideas, imo.  Bugs seem to have a low priority and people who really like the game are always saying stuff will be addressed in the next big what-ever.  I'll come back when the Veteran system is removed.
