I've heard some good things about Lineage II, and it looks like a
pretty cool game that I'd like to try, but I've also heard some
unsettling things about it as well, mostly about the open PvP.
From what I understand, there's nothing stopping other people from
randomly killing your character without provocation in Lineage II save
for the delicate thread of morality some posess that can snap at any
moment when you're nearby. I was really wondering if PK'ing is rampant.
If I spring for this game (since I have to at least buy the game to play
the 'free' trial) will I be killed by random jerks at the turn of every
corner? Will I lose exp, or incurr some death penalty from being killed
by other players? Do players get exp and/or steal my items if I'm killed
by them? Things of that nature. If it's too much of a bother I'll save
my money and try something else.
*edit* Um...just noticed a few minutes after posting this that there are seperate boards for seperate games. Apologies for posting this here instead of on the Lineage II boards. On that note, botting seems to be an issue too. Since this is already posted here, any comments on that also?

Judging by what I see, I would assume that you aren't those hardcore 24/7 gamers, so, my answer would be:
HELL YES!

Even if you were a 24/7 hardcore gamer ...you should fear this game. I hate saying bad things about a game but.....this one is pretty horrid. Open PVP is only a griefers sytem...you have to find loopholes in the system to actually even make it somewhat usefull. The griefing system is not so much just high lvls beating up on low levels, it goes much deeper. Low levels can grief high levels, farmers can grief just about anyone.
Depth...dont even get me started on depth. If you like questing...forget it there is none.( or none to speak of) If you like to grind and farm and do an occasional castle seige, then yes you may like the game. It also has very nice graphics, of course you look like about a million other people since there is no character customization.
This game for the most part is more work than play. If you want a FUN game try any other game on the listbut dont try this one, lol.
No im not a carebear either, in fact I was part of a guild that captured every castle on the server with its allies. Maybe you would like it , maybe not...but if your goign to blow 50 bucks and then some--go with something else.
Yes and no. It'll happen sometimes and sometimes it won't. Helpful answer eh?
My now rather aging experience from the L2 beta (and, otherwise, PvP servers in general) is that most folks do not randomly attack (except for the newbie zones). However, there are definitely those who do and when they do it's very frustrating.
Two of my experiences in L2..
There were a couple of players working together in the newbie areas who would gank anyone without friends near by. They seemed to be quite stronger than the average character in the area. Though not common, that's their typical approach.
Second, I was running around with a good friend of mine and we were attacked by three or four others as soon as we left the city area. We handed their various bits back to them but they jumped us as a group with no provocation.
Generally speaking however I ran around without a great deal of trouble. The real question that you need to ponder is if you will be able to deal with uncommon moments of incredible frustration. Random attackers are almost always of much higher level and/or travel in packs and they'll target you over, and over, and over. Just because.
Is that worth your money?
Avoid Lineage 2, has the most boring and frustrating gameplay i've ever experienced.
I could be more nasty, so I will stop here.
Save the money for a proper game
Lineage 2 is the hands down worst MMORPG I've ever played. The whole system is designed to annoy you. The pets are insanely hard to level, and easy to kill (with perma death). The leveling system is boring, you get like 2 skills you can activate until like level 20 which then you get like 2 or 3 more, then you get like 2 or 3 more at level 40... and that's like it. You end up not even really having enough useful skills to fill your skill bar. The game is designed around this idea that the longer it takes you to play the end game, the longer you'll pay for the game. This game gives NCSOFT a bad bad name... and I like guild wars (looking foreward to auto assault and tabula rasa as well!)
What made me laugh at the idiocy of this game was that most RPG's give you things when you level, but in lineage two you only get things every 5 levels... which are extremely drawn out. Also, you don't even get attack/defense upgrades or stat upgrades at level up, instead the level up gives you the option to get the upgrades but you still have to grind even more from that point to get SP(skill points) to spend to just get stats, which are also required for skills.
As much as I hate the game, stop exaggerating.
5 Words:
Stay Away From This Game
Clarification:
Lineage II is an excercize in extreme boredom, especially if you don't like grinding.
I am SOOOO mad at myself for wasting $50 on this lousy title. Glad I never subscribed beyond the trial period.

I'm not exaggerating... I played a dwarf.
Ok lets go over the skills
- you get an attack and defense option for skills. These are passive.
- you get a + to damage skill you can add to your skill bar
- you get some scavenging/foraging type abilities that allow you to possibly get something unique from the body of each kill for crafting (which was neat).
- what else do you get until level 20?
- you start to get more attack skills - but not a lot, and abunch of the things are passive... when I was level 40 I didn't have enough skills that I used to fit my skill bar.
hey dont listen to these guys they are just mad cause they died in the game...email me an ill tell u of my experiance

L2 is the hardest game to level in although they have made things MUCH easier for lower levels in C3, but post 60 it is still a real grind.
I also fail to understand people all these games are basically the same, but everyone thinks the game they are currently playing is the best. It is all kill, level, get skills, rinse and repeat. It may be packaged differently with instances, quest, skill based, but it is still the same thing.
To get to max level in L2 takes a lot, but I would rather that, then the watered down easy mode games we are currently getting. I mean one of the current games you can get to level 60 in 30-45 days of playing and many of the players have repeated this on 3-5 characters. L2 is by no means is a perfect game, and does have many things that are annoying and frustrating, but I have found that in every game I have played.
Game companies have listened to all the whining and made these games so watered down that everyone will have a max character in a short time, which will in turn cause these same gamers to get bored, complain that there is nothing to do, complain on the boards and then leave the game for the next new and shiney game that comes along.
And to the orginal posters question, I went back to L2 about 2 months ago and play on a causal basis and I have yet to be PK'd. I have had a few fights which is good and makes the game interesting at least to me. If you want to look for trouble you can find it though but it is not like you will be PK'd everytime you log in. There used to be newbe griefers but they have added guards throughout the newbe hunting area's to prevent that now. Anway good luck to you in what ever you decide.
Alright here it goes ...
Linage 2 is a wonderfull game , but most people wont see that since they are so cought up in their carebear
games where everything is handed to them and the only competition is that nasty looking pixel dragon that
runs the same scripted AI over and over again and mostly dying in pvp (in the carebear games) just means
you have to run some more no risk nor reward in any of those games and mostly no freedom in any of those games how ever in l2 ,
you have your total freedom to make your own choices in pvp aswell as in lvling and its all a challenge
every step you take outside town could be your last step :P and that leet item you just found might not be your for long BUT the system works 2 ways you know lets say someone who is chaotic attacks you but
you turn around and slice the bastard into pieces there will most likley be a reward there for you , a bright
and shiney item straight from your attackers backpack (tell me is there is anything sweeter then that)
so in short if you like hard games with lots of danger/freedom/risk and reward this is for you
if you like carebear games where everything is handed to you .. go for WoW or something
Hmm
Well to your first point: I think I was PK'd a whopping 5 times in the entire month I played L2... it wasn't that big a deal. I played UO for years without issue as a PK hunter and dealt with being killed all the time. Your arguement that people are just mad about being killed is silly.
Now your arguement that every MMO is the same grind is also false:
I'll give you an SWG example:
Options to get XP for COMBAT:
Options to get XP for Crafting:
Um... go craft. no need to kill things if you don't want to.
Options to get XP for Entertainers:
Err... dance, sing, whatever... no need to kill things.
Levels? There really aren't "levels" in SWG. Your "Combat Level" is a side affect of the skills you choose to learn. Like other MMO's it does affect what you can handle but since the game is 'skill based' you don't follow a set path. You can start the game as one thing and finish your template as a completely different thing. Along the way you can change your path and move around as many times as you want. Lineage II does not allow this.
Quests: As mentioned above SWG has many. Lineage II has very very very few and those it DOES have are excruciatingly simplistic. They are all what we refer to as repeatable 'kill missions' that you go do something, bring it back and can choose to do so over and over again. YAWN. Nothing spectacular there and the rewards SUCK.
Content: SWG beats Lineage II hands down. Space, (11 sectors) 10 Planets 8 themed areas tons of instanced areas on Kashyyk, etc.
Lineage II has more players, by a long shot. I still haven't figured out why. I played for a month and hit level 18.... In SWG in a month I was able to finish my initial template (which I've changed about half a dozen times now). In Lineage even if I DID manage to grind all the way to the level cap I wouldn't be able to go "ya know... I think I'd rather be a healer". Nope... I'd have to start a whole new character and grind through all those levels again. Not so in SWG.. I can just start dropping skills and learning new ones as I decide to.
If you LIKE Lineage II that's fine. It's got decent graphics (though they're WAY too anime' for me) and ok sound effects. It's got PVP which is decent and a 'law' system in place to prevent TOO much griefing (though, like UO, it isn't all that effective).
Lineage offers you:
A hellish grind to reach a decent level (the grind REALLY starts showing by level 15... I don't even want to think what it must be like later in the game. Level 15-18 felt like level 40-50 in EQ before they reduced the 'hell level' impact.
Decent PVP.
Most other MMO's offer:
In depth Quest Systems (I gave you an example of SWG and didn't even go into the fact that in SWG I can hop in a spaceship and fly around in space)
In depth Combat Systems (Lineage II's combat feels very basic to me)
In depth crafting systems (Lineage II's crafting is very basic and not well thought out)
In depth community systems (Non-existant in Lineage II, and other MMO's as well)
In depth PVP systems (Lineage II has a decent PVP system)
Awesome graphics (Lineage II has that as well, but far too anime' for me, what is with the elves running hunched over and looking like they have a pole shoved up their rears anyway?)
I won't go any further. I liked Lineage II until I realized that the game had no real community, no quest system, a weak crafting system, no housing system, no non-combat profefssions (at all) and no plans to implement any of the above.
Compared to other MMO's Lineage II pales in comparison.
I gave an example of the things SWG has that Lineage lacks. I could give you a similar list for WOW, EQ2, EVE, Horizons *gasp* (Yes, even Horizons is more fun than Lineage II folks), EQ1, DAOC, AO, AC, AC2, etc.
I've played all of those games (and a bunch I didn't list). Every single one of them, though I didn't like them as much as SWG, were FAR superior to Lineage II.
The ONLY thing I liked about Lineage II was the PVP in the game. I wish more games would do forced PVP but unfortunately they don't. Asside from the PVP in the game, however, it blows choad.

L2 now has it where you are protected from being griefed in the starting areas. Once you leave the island watch you're back. But I found if you don't cry and whine when pk'ed they will respect you more. If you do cry and whine expect to be pk'ed a lot. I find after I been pk'ed if I msg the guy and laugh and say well done they tend to leave you alone. As time goes on more and more will say you are a good player and leave you alone. Heck even taken into the ranks of great PK clans.
The biggest problem you will run into is the farmers. L2 has the most farmers I have ever seen. I also won't say they are all Chinese but I must say it sure seems they are the biggest problem in the game. Won't do you any good to complain to support it is like they are ok with it.
Take no thought of who is right or wrong or who is better than. Be not for or against.
Bruce Lee
Wow you typed all that out and totally negated your whole arument in the 3rd sentence, "I'll give you an SWG example:" Good one!
YAY for you for not getting the point at all. He stated that "ALL MMOS ARE THE SAME"
I was giving ONE example
There are hundreds
DAOC is different
EVE is different
EQ2 and EQ are different
AO is different
The list goes on and on and on of games that offer far more for a player to do than Grind and PVP.
Lineage II is NOT like other MMO's the ONLY thing it offers that they don't is forced PVP (which I like)
However: They offer FAR FAR FAR FAR more things to do BESIDES PVP than it does.
But that's ok, I know, you hate SWG and just ignored everything after reading that line. Shows your intellect level.

Let me put it this way.By the time you are level 20, You will be tempted to take a spoon and shove it in your eye untill you Loose all your blood and Die.
LOL! I didn't even make it that far. And I had two level 65 toons in EQ when I left. So that should tell you just how bad the grind is in Lineage. And, trust us, there is NOTHING to do but grind.
