correct me if i am wrong, but is this expansion only available to people that are subbed?

so far it feels like the information about this "major" expansion is fairly minimal..

    This is from their faq:

    5.  Can I still get Knights of the Fallen Empire if I don’t have Rise of the Hutt Cartel or Shadow of Revan?
All subscribers  will receive access to Rise of the Hutt Cartel and Shadow of Revan starting on October 27, 2015.

    6.  How do I pre-order Knights of the Fallen Empire?
Knights of the Fallen Empire is not available for pre-order as it is free to all active subscribers . You must be an active subscriber to receive the expansion.

So only for subscribers.  I logged in today to my level 11 Shadow Sin and saw a little red flashing suit of armor above his avatar.  A mouse hover revealed that this weapon has to be activated in the crown store before it can be used.  I suspect activation requires payment of a fee.  Logged right out.

Looks like the ESO (and a couple of others) DLC-free-with-sub model is already having an impact on the industry... it's the new sub way.

This has been the payment model Anarchy Online has been usuing for over a decade. The base game and "Notum Wars" are F2P. Access to anything from "Shadowlands" through "Lost Eden" was for subscribers.

Yeah. It's why I said "and a couple of others"... TSW does it too. But some of those games are not so much in the mainstream MMO gaming consciousness. So much so, that the ESO:TU model has been criticized for being a weird model even though it's not new.

This expansion will be given away for free when they make the next one, just as Shadow of Revan is being given away for free.

GW2 is doing the same thing. Game is F2P, expansion cost money. When next expansion comes out, this new expansion will be given for free. It's a way to stop people from being overwhelmed having to buy tons of games to keep up. It makes more sense to bundle and make money off the new content while giving the older stuff away for free.

If this forces developers to make more and better content... Kudos to the system..paying for games is not a bad thing, as long as there is enough content to play..

This. Paying for actual content is not bad. Paying sub for "access to servers" on top of box cost+expansion cost is what killed subs.

My memory is that you could buy extra content in AO i.e. as DLC.

With TESO people have a choice of buying the content or of paying a subscription allowing them to play the content. Not unique - LotR has it for example.

The suggestion here is that the only way to gain access to the content is via a subscription.
