I think it's probably best to look at these as fan run emulators for the time being. Keep the expectations realistic.

Hard to say what company I hope wins this bid. Wonder if peoples chars will be bought along with the game. Kind of excited to see how this drama plays out.

I wish whoever gets it the best of luck. I have been following/playing this game since Sep 2001. Would certainly give it a look. https://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?379929-Celebrating-12-years-following-Darkfall&highlight=heardist :)

So none of these company's have purchased a license yet, why do you then advertise about them on mmorpg?. It wasn't that long ago that i received a warning for posting news and a link about fan sites.

I really liked DF1, but I don't see how a spinoff version of it is going to do any better than the original when it comes to retaining players. Beyond all the bugs in the core system, the player base for these types of games tends to drive away everyone but "the most 1337" of players. Then the 1337 get fed up because the developers make changes to, you know, stay in business and quit the game. TL:DR game is focused on a niche group of people who are kinda assholes and abandon their niche because it's not 1337 enough.

While that is true in a lot of cases, Darkfall's issue was kind of the opposite. They kept promising and promising they were going to be adding some much needed changes / improvements, fixing bugs, fixing exploits, adding new things, etc. Yet that was all it ever amounted to. Promises. That was the prime reason why I and most people I played with eventually left. It had so much potential, but it just went to waste because of an incompetent dev team. Then they pulled the whole Then "Hey guys, we're releasing a new game instead". Unfortunately the new game might have improved on 25% of things from the original, but then it made the other 75% even worse, ESPECIALLY the fluidity of combat and character movement. Then... more unfulfilled promises, or too little too late. If one of these teams picks up the licensing and is actually competent enough to improve the game, then it has the potential to bring any many more players than the original. Not that those numbers would be some huge feat, but it can at least be somewhat successful.

There's quite a difference between a fansite and a discussion regarding companies obtaining the official rights to run a game.

There will always be the extreme hardcore fans, but taking a really really poor game and hoping to do something with it, seems like someone has gotten a briantumor they cant get rid of.

@Kaiser3282 According to their website the team are fanboys and modders, their so called company is just a wishful thought that will only happen if they get said license. They do not have a DFO license. So the link to their fansite page should be classed as 'White' thus infringing on the rules of this site. There is no difference at all between this group of fanbois / modders and any other group modding a game until they actually purchase the license.

I think some posters may be confusing Darkfall with Darkfall: Unholy Wars. This is about the original Darkfall. I had some of my best times in Darkfall with a core group of RL + IG friends during my time in Darkfall. It is one of the few games, where the fun came from what people did. There was no story, just groups vying for dominance and allegiances on one big map. I'd love to say I'd hop back in, but my time allotment is less than it used to be. For me DF was also a game where you needed to be on a lot to be in the loop and keep up with the pack. I think that the genre might be more welcoming to this type of game these days, and maybe that is why they are pushing for another go-round. Best of luck to them. I wonder why Adventurine doesn't just put a few people on it and open up a server or two and see what happens.

The only reason DF1 shut down was because the development team was trash. Instead of updating the original game properly, they decided to re-write parts of the engine and create DFUW (part 2) and it was a huge disappointment. They changed things that none of the payer base wanted changed and it even had less content than the original. I'm not even going to go into all of the misleading comments form the dev team. I'm super excited and so are my friends, can't wait for DF1's return.

I followed it from its inception, and played it from launch. It was nothing like what it was supposed to be. It was fatally flawed. The skill system, the unlimited points, the lack of variation, the lack of content outside of PvP itself. Darkfall was a shell of an MMO, where only those interested in griefing stayed around. And before people argue that it was a PvP game and didn't need anything else, even Adventurine didn't believe that. They had a lot of amazing ideas of how to make the world and game fun for the average player, including vibrant PvE, dynamic spawn systems and better itemization... but none of it ever came to pass. Only counterstrike with elves, very limited reasons to fight (outside of epeen), and a total lack of meaningful gameplay beyond building and raiding castles.

I would play it again as is.  I can't imagine that they will be able to "fix" that much.  Didn't AV abandon it partially because it was layer upon layer of mediocre code and ideas?  Tasos said that they decided to start over once they realized it would be more work to fix the old one.  I am paraphrasing.  My guess is these people have the right intentions but might have a harder time than they think.

Hey Ripperx, I know the community has talked forever about wanting a df1 server and aventurine said no. Do either of these fan companies actually have any prospects of getting licensing? This sounds very much like wishful thinking and cart before the horse type of stuff. If I were aventurine, I think I would avoid giving out df1 since it would take population from DF unholy wars.

I had a lot of fun with the original Darkfall in spite of its many glaring flaws, but I'm done now. They lost me at Darkfall 2010. A lot of time has passed since then and I've changed as a gamer. I can't go back any more.

  • Pratt2112Pratt2112 Member UncommonPosts: 1,636
l'd definitely go back if they re-launched DF1. I don't know why Aventurine ever abandoned it in the first place. They could have continued putting the effort into improving/fixing DF1, instead of doing the whole Unholy Wars thing. I'd like to get to play my original Mirdain again.

Plus, I had four accounts and they were all wiped when the game closed. That was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. I can't go back and do it all again on game from ten years ago.

Plus, that was when they had the best chance of building a population/community in game. How are they ever going to get numbers of people to play again? They will only get a fraction of the small crowd that played before.

Yeah, people losing all that time/effort left a lot of bitter taste in people's mouths. Then to have it replaced by a game which was widely considered inferior to the original (not talking about stability/bugs, but in terms of gameplay, etc)

Also, that they had these amazing looking characters previewed for UW, only to go with the same basic humanoid body, with different looking heads... what the hell was that all about? Just bring back the original character models at that point...

I don't know what they were thinking, but that was a huge blunder on their part. Their efforts, time and money would have been better spent fixing the original, IMO"

I bought the game and hated it for one simple reason. We could not reset the key binds. Period. I know that seems small, but if you have YEARs of muscle memory on keybinds, it is a big deal..

We are a Press site, and we are all avid gamers from across the board. Many of us played the original Darkfall Online so when information came out that both companies are working with Adventurine for a potential re-release, it's worthy news to any Darkfall fan or avid mmorpger out there. /Hugs RipX

Valid question, it's speculation at this point but both companies have said they are in the process of working out a licensing deal with AV. I do believe things are moving forward but nothing has been confirmed yet, and at this point one would think, why doesn't AV just re-open DF1, personally I'm just guessing here but being able to sell your game engine (which was written from the ground up by AV) is a good way to make more money, and seeing the current economy and DFUW not being the success they had thought, it could be a good venture into giving other devs the ability to create more out of the original engine and increase revenue from licensing at the end of the day on AV's end. That said, who knows, we shall see what happens.

The real question is do they even lift?
