And I have played almost that entire time. I can honestly say that I have made close to $5,000 playing this 'game'. I have done in-world product development starting from design, modelling, texturing, scripting, sound, packaging, marketing, sales and support. It is fun if you are into inventing and having people appreciate your work.
The community is strange and getting stranger. The gay, BDSM, furry, goth, vampire, dope smoking, porn freak culture is rampant. For most people just joining it can come off as a huge laggy sex chat room. But, if you are into building - it has no competition. Plus, as far as I know, it is the only MMO world that permits cashing their currency for US$ and vica versa.
After 2 years it only has 32,829 subscribers with only about 2000 active at a time. So your market is pretty limited. It is growing. But, with the technical limitations it faces based on the underlying technical platform decisions - they have a rough road ahead of them.
