Your Dream MMO

Pretty simple, what's yours?

Mine would basically be the game mercenaries in MMO form. It would be totally player skill oriented, with maybe a couple upgradable abilities(possibly how steady your hand is for sniping or your handling for driving) , but no leveling. Essentially, instead of level, you'd have reputation, (if it was set in vietnam, same sides as in the original game, maybe could be set in russia or something), and your reputation would increase as you got better, shown by how many missions you've executed and how well (did u kill the guy on the first try niec and clean, or did you have to blow up an entire building and kill all his guards just to get to him), and maybe some other aspects.

As your reputation increased, the certain sides would give you more dangerous and difficult, yet better paying, missions. You could gain your trust with one side, or be just side with the highest bidder at any one moment, being feared but respected by all. In fact, you wouldn't even have to be a mercenary, you could be a soldier for one side, where you'd be forced to carry out orders, but have the full trust of a faction.

As for the actual gameplay, totally twitch, a third person shooter and driving game, just like the single player. Huge map, as to limit player to player interaction in a way that you wouldn't likely run into another mercenary unless it was planned (how I wish it was in MxO0, and civilians would outnumber mercenaries and guards. Players would be discouraged from just running around and shooting at people (whether npc or player) for no reason, as they would be fined for collatoral damage (like in the game) and chased after by police and soldiers. If you were a mercenary, a bounty could be put on your head if you were hated by one faction for players that are soldiers of that faction or other mercenary's could hunt you down.

As for the story, it wouldn't have to be much more than "The russian mafia really needs to assassinate this member of the South Korean (this would be if it had the same setting as the single player game) military who's having a meeting in this general area sometime and this general area this other time, your either rushing to protect or kill him, or maybe while all the attention is over there, it'd be easy to take out one of the russian mafia's big boys for the US and earn some big cash."

To discourage a big rush of mercs during these kind of events that would be completely unrealistic, if you show yourself as a potential assassin, you get killed by the overwhelming large npc army protecting the main man.

As for death/health, if you 'died', I'd say that char is dead, since there's so little random player interaction, and if the non-random player interaction was intended as an attack (eg a bounty on your head, or u defending someone), then the whole interaction would be with little point if you just sprung right back up at a hospital. Since there is so little character skill aspect, all you'd lose was your rep and money.

It would be unlikely that u'd die, however, as the map is so big its hard for people to go around shooting ten players in a row. However, if you get shot in the head, you are out, and if you get shot in the chest, you are probably out (unless you have some kind of armor), no unrealistic you have to get shot ten times before you died. However, you might not get shot in a vital area, (head or totally unprotected chest) only be incapacitated, and end up in a M.A.S.H.

As for the map, instead of having different worlds on each server, each server could be a different part of the planet (Korea, different parts of russia/eastern europe, parts of south america, the carribean, etc). Plenty of people would stick to the server they started in, as it would be huge and there'd be so much to do in that single map, but you could move freely from server to server, keeping the same char and rep (although the transfers may take time). This would create one giant planet to play in, spread out the community, yet allow the entire to community to be just that, one community, instead of several, seperated by different game worlds. It would also eliminate the problem of a story event occuring on each server, with a different outcome on each one, making it hard to keep the story plausibly going in the same direction.

And that's basically it. Anyone who wants to branch off that or dream up their own MMO?
(And if I see this game announced in two days, I better get some credit ::::28:: )

can u guys be a little more specific. How would these work to really be MMORPGs? (For instance, GTA, would it just be a bunch of people aimlessly running around jacking cars, or would there be little more depth).

Grand Theft Auto can make a very well mmorpg, here is why 1) Normal GTA has a gang, mafia or some group that you work for 2) GTA  has a good story to there series but more during gta3 and above, 1 and 2 was kinda just a blow stuff up not much of a story. 3) You can have know place from each game as zones vice city, liberty city and so on. The only draw back to making this game will be. The out cry of all the republicans and democrats whine about how games make people kill each other. So you see it has all the works for a mmorpg but i don't ever seeing it happen do to the fact that the out cry will cause rockstar more problems for there pocket then they would gain. Due to the fact that they get sued alot for stupid crap. I can see it now 15 year old boy hit's a old man with a baseball bat after playing GTA online. The old man sue's Rockstar for 5 million.

I wasn't saying GTA wouldn't make a good online game (in fact, it could probably make a very good one). Just look the description of my dream Merc game, dream up how you'd want it exactly.
