"Guild Wars 2’s monthly active user base has doubled to 3.1 million"

I saw this post on reddit.com/r/Guildwars2.

Here's the actual source.

And then the quote.

"“Guild Wars 2 has proven pretty resilient historically, with about 1.5 million monthly actives,” SuperData Research CEO Joost van Dreunen says. “Since it switched to free-to-play in late August, Guild Wars 2’s monthly active user base has doubled to 3.1 million (October 2015). "

Yeah....lets not take in to consideration that it was fresh, with a bunch of people getting ready for the expansion. I'm sure GW2 is a special gem and wont see any numbers tapper off in the next couple of months.

Regardless, not many games can say the same about themselves.

It very well could be a special gem.  I've gone back to GW2 after a long hiatus.  I've yet to buy the expansion and don't really have plans to do so either.  It's nice being able to go back pretty much whenever you want and  pick up right where you left off.

That's really impressive, especially considering that game kind of really sucks...

I think it's the one MMO that hit the much-sought-after sweet spot of a WoW-clone that is just different enough to be somewhat interesting to WoW fans, but not too different to scare them away.

I went back for the expansion.  I find it very annoying in design, as an article here covered.  I'm not sure I'm sticking with it and I'm definitely not spending anything in the shop.  The base of the game is solid but filled with horrible design decisions.

Free players sure do make those numbers rise and sound big.  Sadly for me, after playing the expansion and hating the fact that I can't solo the new maps like I can the base game, I will no longer be a GW2 fan or player.

How're the expansion areas now that people have their advanced professions and the problems of getting enough people in an area (the developers saying their servers were messing up and that is why you rarely saw anyone) have been solved?

When I was playing solo -- or even with friends -- it was all about rolling / running away as a plate wearing warrior and hoping RNG didn't screw me and instead screwed my friends with vines two shotting them with all ascended gear (not a fan of acting like a coward as a melee in games).  My friend is pissed about this in particular, as the base game was misleading in that she thought the expansion could be solo'd without any problems like how the 1-80 experience was.

Did Druids and Glint help with this any?  The healing and AoE 33% damage reduction?

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

I'll be surprize if they keep this numbers going after a few months like any mmo, But I did buy GW2 at it's full cost and I did get my money worth. I my get the expansion some day but I don't have the time to grind my self this point of time.

I did go back for a day or 2, but it couldn't really hold my interest.
It had been a while and i had no idea what i was doing, and i really didnt want to ditch my 80's and start from scratch.

I am not sure how someone could call GW2 a WoW clone cause its about as different from WoW as one can get without not being a MMORPG.   I mean I guess if you call having quests..  oh wait GW2 doesnt have quests.. ahhh..  hmm waiting to find similar things between GW2 and WoW..  Maybe having gear and being a rpg makes it a WoW clone..  Maybe its the fact that there is loot shared between the two games..

Well I guess every MMORPG is a WoW clone cause there is very little similar between GW2 and WoW and if one is a clone of the other then every MMO out there must be a WoW clone.

Just saying it sounds like you have not played GW2 at all if you call it a WoW clone..

Active players will of course go up when an expansion hits and slowly go down until the next one comes out (with possibly raises for certain holiday or personal story events), that is how MMOs work.

3.1 millions are pretty good but it could certainly be better.

As for HOT not being solofriendly that is true, or at least that it is less solofriendly than the earlier content. Personally I think that is good, working together for a common goal is always more fun to me and GW2 still have plenty of soloable content but making all open world content for soloers takes out a lot of the charm of a game.

And we seen not so solofriendly zones earlier as well, Orr did get nerfed to be more solofriendly but places like Silvermarches are still group zones. I could live with them nerfing Verdant brink though so there is one more solofriendly place in maguuma but stay away from the others.

I think both figures, 1.5M or 3M are impressive..... if only it was ANET or NCSoft providing them.

But they are from Stupordata so the figures don't carry the same weight.

I bought the game but didn't play it much.  Tab target solo-centric PVE content where you kill 20 of this/collect 10 of that, same old same old.  Instanced PVP battlegrounds.  Similar graphics to WoW.

Only difference I noticed was you could dodge and block.  Hardly groundbreaking.

I got bored with it and stopped playing it after just a few days, despite having spent money on it.

You probably played a lot of WoW and liked it.  GW2 to you seems incredibly different, but not different enough to scare you away like other games might.  This is what I mean by the sweet spot of WoW clones.

Super Data is a business for hire and developers and publishers hire them to get research data to them.Of course they cannot maintain their business if they keep offering bad advice and post lower numbers,so yeah i wouldn't take anything from them with a grain of salt.

Secondly,i have mentioned this already several times,Esports are ruling the market and ruining the market.

I notice Anet has signed a deal with ESL  to become an esport and i find that laughable because GW2 is anything but an esport.

The road we are heading down  is all about money and FAKE money and poor  ideals.Just like we see every game calling itself an mmo now we will see non esport games becoming epsorts just because they make monetary deals to call themselves such.

You can say i am biased whatever but imo fps's are the ONLY game that suits a real esport because you can create a PERFECT even playing field aside from internet latency. However once you get to big tournaments that is usually done on a lan anyhow. All these other games are not balanced,at least not perfectly the way a fps is,they are using classes and various setups for each player and various gear and upgrades, anything but a level playing field.

ESPORT is derived from the word sport, sport needs to have an even playing field.Any game using intangibles should not be an esport.

Ouch you really got no clue about this game.  Hands down the best mmorpg ever made with the best management I have ever seen.  No I'm not a fanboi but not many people can honestly say very many bad things about this game.
Are you onto something or just on something?

    ?????????????

Nevertheless, you will not understand GW2's uniqueness until you play to max level and beyond.

My only gripe with GW2 is that they should upgrade their servers to support double or even triple the size on a single mega server. Make it feel more massive!

Doesn't sound right at all, with that many active players they should have been having record sales of the expac.  Something is fishy here.

Edit:  It was not ANet claiming those numbers.  It was superdata claiming them just on the month after GW2 went F2P, not people continuing to play.  This same company estimates 6% of F2P MMO users keep playing.

How are they NOT related?  If people are playing the game, not just DLing it and then deleting it, they will need the expac.
