ideas for mmo gaming during upcoming political turmoil and WW3

l2avisml2avism Member UncommonPosts: 386
I'm starting this thread to discuss the future of MMO gaming in the next 20 years.

The latest developments:

1. USA edging closer to war with Russia+China over syria (WW3)
2. The global economy is dead, is going to get worse
3. next generation internet standards (like internet 2) are censorship intensive
4. Left leaning political factions are trying to eliminate free speech using hate speech laws
5. future of democracies around the world uncertain
6. the world is headed toward collectivism instead of individualism

It's unlikely that if we continued on that track that we would still have gaming of any kind. Hell, most of us will be struggling just to find food and shelter.
But for the sake of it, how would you continue to be an MMO gamer in those extreme circumstances?

THIS THREAD IS NOT ABOUT DISCUSSING POLITICAL VIEWS OR SOCIALISM/COLLECTIVISM/FACISM VS INDIVIDUALISM/CAPITALISM BUT IS INTENDED TO DISCUSS HOW TO KEEP ON PLAYING MMO'S IN SUCH A HARSH ENVIRONMENT.
Kind of like doomsday preppers for gamers.

1. Move to the hills. Literally because...
2. Build a dam across a stream for submerging a water powered turbine to generate electricity
3. Solar panels. You need alot. Really, alot. 100 sqft only generates 40 watts.
4. HAM radios. You can implement packet radio over ham radio and in theory build an isolated internet free of government control. (although at 64kbps)
5. Gardens. Grow potatos. Raise chickens. Eat the eggs not the chickens. Eggs are more efficient.
6. Use linux. Other commercial OS's have government backdoors. The goverment would implement an information blackout/killswitch in the event of total war.

Add anything?

I was hoping that this thread would be fun.

I won't. As it is, with my own financial issues and a family, I have little-to-no time to play an MMO anymore. I think the only one's that would really weather the storm would be the ones where people don't have to worry about future payments, like Free to Play or buy upfront types already are.

The more casual, probably the better. I doubt you'll find as many hard-core, stay up all night type of MMOs in this version of the future.

Well, I completely disagree that we're heading towards world war 3. Your three opening points have no basis in reality whatsoever, it just sounds like you've been listening to hill-billy radio too much.

However, removing the false political bollocks for a while and focusing on what I *think* was the purpose of your thread: how to continue gaming in a post apocalyptic world.

It all comes down to power supply.

In any sort of global apocalypse, chances of the power grid still working is virtually nil. So, we'll have to generate our own power in order to be able to play games. Wind turbine would be my prefered method for generating power, hooked up to a stack of looted car batteries. During windy weather, you could probably stack up enough power to keep everything going for a few days or more (depending on battery quality). Wind turbines are relatively easy to understand and maintain, certainly much easier than building your own hydro-electic dam!

I think I'd just admit defeat on MMOs though. With the power grid gone, you're never going to have the ability to connect to enough people. We'll also most likely lack the servers / software to host an MMO. So, i'll just stick to a looted TV and play some multiplayer console games with mates (assuming anyone else survives!).

As for the location, I've done a lot of sailing in my time so my apocalypse plan involves me stealing a luxury yacht. Being sail powered, it gives me mobility without requiring gas. If its a luxury yacht / ocean going yacht, it'll have solar panels and / or a small wind turbine as standard. It'll probably have a tv already on board!
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman

Might as well just said, gaming in the zombie apocalypse.

At least in that world scenario stuff actually goes down.   In yours well the powers that be would rather have people entertained and distracted.

Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.
