I was surprised how beautiful and lively the world is, played it for some hours now and im loving it.
You see player and NPCs everywhere doing something, the world feels very alive, didnt expect much from the game at beginning, but holy cow this game is damn nice so far.

It is the best looking (visually) MMO right now, by far and away especially characters/faces.

    But..

Do the quests have an substance? from what I found at lvl 20 or so on the JP client, was that this game's presentation and story are shallow and quests are just "grind here, now go grind over here". Not much of any real substance.

Maybe the housing and crafting will be enough to make me feel like I am part of a world. But spending hours in the wilderness slaughtering orcs and things with no real purpose is not something I am looking forward to.

Very beautiful game. Lack of classes is a down note to me. No thief class? Questing is very typical and boring. Yet the world is very alive. Makes for doing those quests easier. I am liking what I have played so far. Playing a Warrior.
Yeah questing is not so awesome but not bad either, and there are thief classes in the korean version, not sure how fast they will be available in EU/NA version or if they will be already at launch.

Class / trinity games are far harder to design and pull off, its much easier to make everyone a hybrid with similar skills skinned as a bow / sword / staff / fist which is what more and more MMO's are doing.  They really don't have to worry about the synergy between players, they just have to pack in enough " action " into each pseudo class to distract from the lack of real group play and dependencies.

I still play these types of games on occasion because I like games, but there is a lack of uniqueness between players, just aesthetically in looks alone or whatever you buy from the cash shop.

So far I'm loving the game. I like that the quests are grindy and I typically just camp out in an area for a bit to do some "killin'".

Though with all the crowds it is somewhat difficult.

I think this will be my new home for the foreseeable future if I can get into a good guild.

It's all very well having beautiful graphics but how's the translation going - that usually spoils the immersion for me?
  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332
I don't think anyone has ever disputed the graphics however i will dispute it being a good game,it does so many things i despise about game design.
As soon as a game adds in unrealistic markers it loses all respect from me.

Imo they simply do not have a clue on the term "immersion",they  think a rpg is as simple as add in login screen, player, mobs, world and it is an automatic mmorpg.IDK maybe in their make believe world they actually do see lines and circles everywhere,i wonder if they see those in their sleepy dreams.Seriously when does the idea pop into their head,do they even think about it or "ok we see other games doing ,lets copy them".

Tbh, I try to not read the quests and just click fast or cancel cinematics. Just wanna try out classes and see the beauty of the world. I wanna save the story for launch.

the game got almost no substance sadly, that all about pretty graphic

the pve quest are what you say until the end, and the game dont realy have any instance party or special boss, also the mobs drop only the basic item from each class ( you need upgrade them +1 +2 +3 ect, you almost never change gears ) what you look lvl 10-20 will be the same forever.

also in the jp version it cost hundred of real life money upgrade these item to max rank, you fail alot
( money sink ) yeah you can grind the money ingame for it, BUT GOOD LUCK that realy crazy hard and the item for upgrade are crazy expensive im betting most people serious about the game and if they want do pvp will spend real life money upgrade these items.....

and the pvp almost never happen in the others version, i know they are trying fix it but so far it dont work because people got no reason to pvp and you lost alot from tagging in pvp and most people just dont tag to open pvp because nothing to win and alot to loss....

what you do end game ? since the game dont have gears grind or raid or instance or pvp, usualy people quit
or they do farme trade route, basicaly bring  a item from point A to point B for get more money or they build their ''instanced house''

the game lack substance im warning everyone about it so before you spend 100$ or way more im giving you the advice to try the rusian version with WTFAST ( free now) and the english patch, both take 20 sec to google and honestly the english patch almost the same that the NA version... it not worth or better... they could have just release the NA version and stop milking these founder pack... but that something else.

For the most part quest will give you contribution and knowledge.  Contribution points allow you to buy houses and workers, and Knowledge open's up access to other npc's.  Quest are well worth doing imo. Now if you want to level up fast and get skill points, then by all means go out a grind on mobs but in the end your character is going to suffer for that decision.

I am really enjoying the game. Loving the Warrior class much more then I did the Giant in the alpha weekend. I am a mob grinder so for questing I like Go Kill quest so the questing in Black Desert is just the way I like it.  I dont like games that have alot of questing that sends you running back and forth talking to npcs. That stuff bores me to death.

If this game is managed right I think we may finally have something real to play. Fingers crossed. :-)

The game is gorgeous I'll give it that but that's about as far as I will go with it.......

Played it for a several hours and it put me to sleep. Yes its a very beautiful game but there is almost no substance to it. Seems even more dumbed down than most.

Its going to be one of those games youre going to have to RP, take youre time and go slow. I can tell that just from the streams I have watched.

Its also going to need some major expansions or updates. Something not seen at all as they change versions.

Its only 30 bucks so it will sell a lot of copies, whether it goes beyond that remains to be seen. I imagine most people will wait for a STEAM sale before they get it because its not a game where being first in makes a difference.

Look a little deeper and you might be surprised.  Its not as shallow as you think it is.

I agree about the markers and wonder if there is a way to turn them off. They seem out of place with everything else so immersive. Really like the feel of the world!

I agree with this from my early experience so far. When I ran around and couldn't talk to certain NPCs, other than greetings, and noticed I needed to talk to other people first I thought that was great. I immediately thought if all towns/cities were like this.

The combat is just the type I've been looking for with direction and situation deciding what you should do. I actually had a reason to practice in front of a dummy.

Had the corner of my eye on this title since I heard about it but seemed like it was too good to be true. May have been wrong, we'll see.

Still, I'll take grind, if it comes with freedom to wander and explore, over being herded down a fabricated "you-are-the-chosen-one" stale storyline any day.  I'm frankly tired of being in a story, and really want to play a resident of a world.

Sounds to me like they're doing this game right.
Well, there is a "main quest" that is tied into the creepy shadow thing. However, you can just wander and grind/hunt/kill. I just leveled a Wizard to 10 by doing a goblin quest and just staying in the area and hunting.

I agree I am in love with the graphics.  It's everything I could want from an MMO.

Only problem for me is my graphics card isn't great.  I can play the game but it doesn't look like the shots in the OP, unfortunately.
