Last great hope for MMORPG's?

Kobin24Kobin24 Member UncommonPosts: 28
I realize that there is a good chance only a small amount of people will relate, with that being said, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen is my last great hope for MMORPG's.  I remember back in 1999 when I was able to participate in a demo for EQ, my friends and I were totally blown away, we couldn't wait to get home and download the game.  Little did we know what journey Norrath would have in store for us.  We made new friends, had absolutely epic encounters, our names and reputation meant something, we were immersed in our virtual world.  I want my reputation to mean something, If I KS that camp you've waited hours on, my name should be slurred across the land, if I prove to be an asset in groups and help you in dire need, I'd like that to be recognized as well.  Obviously i'm not saying everything little thing someone does should be reported, my point is, with 100's of servers and being able to LFR and Duty Finder across servers, your name and reputation mean little.  I want to be immersed again, I want to have to plan out dungeon crawls, I want to fail and learn from those mistakes, I want that unforgiving world that used to make Norrath loved and hated all at the same time.  Does anyone else feel this way?  Feel free to share stories of any epic journeys you may have had.  Happy Holidays to all!

My first mmo was vanilla wow,

My second was Dungeons & Dragons Online. It had a bad beginning reputation of being broken, but I didn't know that at first, besides it had been out for probably several months and everything was completely fixed.  In fact, between Vanilla WoW and D&D I didn't even know what a buggy mmo looked like yet.

Anyway, I played a healer for the first time and learned to stay back and keep people alive.  I found this fun.  Weeks went by, and I found I was need, and better yet wanted.  The game had lots of healers but players wanted me !.......This was a great feeling.  The game seemed to have a delay at log in. by the time I was in I would have five or six invites.  Several would say I was a good healer, so it wasn't just because healers were needed.

You need to be fixed on a server to have a community !

You need a fixed server to know where you stand !

You need a fixed server as a driving force to play an mmo for years, or its just another game that you get sick of.

@delete5230 as I've always played tanks, I completely understand why people would always want to group with a known good healer :).  I agree with all the points you made, I'm really hoping Pantheon provides this.

If the world ends shortly after Pantheon release then the OP might have a point.

But as niche as Pantheons vanilla EQ1 modeled gameplay will be, why assume that this is the last of its kind?

Brad (or another developer) could very well keep making classic eq1 inspired MMORPGs in the future.

He doesnt say any such thing ..

he says .. its his "Last Great Hope" he says nothing anywhere about it being last of its kind ..

you interjected that ...   which be an entirley different topic ...

      Please try to follow along

Because developers could but they dont. One crap action based combat MMO after another over the past 4 years or so. Triple A developers all seem to think making MOBA style combat in MMOs is the way to cash in on the success of MOBAs. What they dont get is many MMOers dont want to play MOBAs or we would be playing MOBAs lol. I think you dont see it because your right in there with them pounding out the same cookie cutter games. Action combat, check. Solo rich game play, check. No need to team from level 1 to top level, check. Crafting system that is meaningless, check. Class system with many flavors of DPS with no rolls, check. I say this because I see the games you herald as awesome.

I've seen you bash GW2's combat but you have EQN as a pic in your sig? EQN is action combat isn't it?

    Pot meet Kettle?

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

I didn't say it would be the last of it's kind, I simply stated; to @Nanfoodle 's point : all the games out there right now to me feel watered down and non-immersive.  Can you name a game where dying is anything but a small inconvenience?  Everything today feels so rushed, run in aoe, if you're not going at 100x speed and pulling the whole room you're looked down upon (sorry, I play tanks).  Unfortunately, those are the kinds of games being made right now.  Your name means little because you're merged with 20 different servers when you LFR or queue up for some random dungeon.  God forbid you spend a few minutes to make your own group and go out and explore together.  I get it, you have a job and you have a family and if you have to wait for 10 minutes and be social that is just too much stress for a game....but that's the kind of game i'd like to see, that's what EQ and Vanguard (to me at least) were.  I don't doubt there are 100's of devs with the tools and capabilities to make such a game, it's just not the flavor of the month/year/decade.  For me, Pantheon seems to be trending in the direction i'd like to see, hence for me; it's my last great hope :).  Hope that cleared things up and Merry Christmas Eve!!

Yup it is action combat and that saddens me greatly. The things that have me excited for in EQN has nothing to do with combat. We will see in the next few months if any of the game will be as planed. Shows how sad things are, only MMO I hope for is one that has a combat style I hate and Pantheon that is in Financial despair lol

Pantheon is the one and only MMO in development I'm actually interested in. All others are either full-loot-PvP- psycho-magnets, Asian garbage or just dull.
