Sweet, Salty, Popcorn Gaming - Devilian Review

Devilian is like popcorn, or more succinctly, caramel popcorn. It’s not a bad game, it just has such a singular flavor that eating too much of it will leave you feeling sick to your stomach. We’ve been playing it these past few weeks and are ready to pitch in our final review of Trion’s latest MMO.  I immediately fell in love with the concept of TERA meets Diablo, the MMO.

The primary flaw in this game is the inconsequential loot. Coupled with a linear progression system alongside interminable questing, equating to a lusterless and monotonous affair.

This is what happens when they bring in an unfinished game. They should have taken 6 more months, localized up to 60 content and then released the whole game. People would have had a far better time with the game then. It is true that at this point there is not much customization but there are costume that may be added through abyssal points, i am saying may be because trion might decided to put all costume in cash shop, let's hope not. Overall that score is fine for the game as it is now. You might have to redo it after 60 release.

I haven't always agreed with your reviews, but I really think you nailed it this time. Your descriptions of the good and bad are right on IMHO. I've been playing this since beta, and it really is a game which is different enough, that it's fun. I also agree that this is a game you can leave for awhile and then come back and enjoy, and yet you don't feel as if you missed too much.

I agree thanks for giving a nice review of the game. When I played my 1st toon to 52 it was fun then doing the same duengons over and over got boring fast. Now will see what happens in the next expansion for the content of the game.
Though I will admit I'm finaly giving Marvel heroes a fair trial run so far so good.

Good review. I find that i can only play so much as its getting boring and at level 30 my shadowhunter seems god like already. I haven't died once in this game. It didn't help when i found the AH as gear is really really cheap and you get so much gold that you need to spend it on something. I was decked out in full blue set early on in this game.

I'm confused on how everything in the end got a 7 or above but the final score is 6.8?

What? Edit: Misread, I thought I saw a 7 on longevity but it was a 5.

I agree with almost everything this review says, I really wanted to love this game but sadly after a few weeks of the constant grind I am ready to move onto something else. This game does really feel like its a few additions away from having some life but right now its just another 30 day grind and on to something else.

It seemed alright from what I could see (playing only a few hours), though piss easy. I resorted to pulling nearly entire zones of mobs with my evoker because I was bored as heck.

Not a game for me, but then again; I generally don't like ARPG's (not Diablo, Torchlight or POE either).

If people get a chance try Devilian with steam controller little get use too but after getting use to it I'm balling.

You didn't mention that you can no longer obtain Butchery gear from Hell dungeons. For whatever reason they've disabled it. After running over 50 dungeons on 0, +1, +2, and +3, NOTHING has dropped. This is a major turn off and nearly 30 players in my guild and a couple others have quit because if you can't gear up, why play?

Gameplay 4 - nothing new here. Combat is meh.
Visuals 7 - nothing new here but it is relatively pretty.
Polish 5 - has some bugs and during my one and only dungeon run, Trion decided to take the server down.
Longevity 1 - never felt the need to go back and log in much less finish that dungeon.
Value 4 - because it's free. I would have preferred paying for something worth playing though. (hint: it's not this game)
Overall: 4.2 (average of the above. still seems to high for this title)

Saw the game pre-beta, looked like a D3 clone.

Played the game in beta, and after release, for 5 minutes.

Thinking it was a D3 clone was an insult to D3.

The game is atrocious, along with its seemingly sister game ELOA.

Yes, the publisher NHN/Han games, pulled out of pc gaming and focusing completely on mobile games. But it was picked up by another publisher in south east asia. But it did not pick up any in korea since it is impossible to beat lineage in korea, they still love that old arppg of bygone era.

Well, Bill can be a bit too nice at times. In a system scored 1-10 the average really should be 5.5 and few reviewers get that when you make an average score of the games they done. He is usually spot on though about the good and bad of a game and almost all reviewers are equally generous.

I tend to subtract 5 from any reviewers score and see it as 1-5 scale instead, that gets right on the spot for almost all games.

The game is descent. Nice to play while we wait for Lost Ark and Lineage Eternal, or even taking a break from Diablo 3. Once Lost Ark and Lineage Eternal hit or enter into beta this game will be dead or at least have a small niche of people playing. Those two games look amazing. A lot of games will lose player base if those two games live up to the hype.

Lets not kick it if some stuff can remind people of D3. If the game is good or bad up to the player. After playing D3 and Devillian there some stuff that D3 can do but Devillan can't and the other way around. Over all I didn't get to max level in Devillian yet I did with D3 and D3 have a lack of good game play with out grind endless with out some type of goal Devillian can be the same not sure yet until I get to endgame.

But if it's a clone or not but it better be not a bad close so far it's not bad not super great to me other then I can play with a controller with no problems.

I just got 2 butchery drops on hell +2 today. It still drops - make sure you have the blessing on for increased drops though.

But it's RNG you know. I got my full butchery set in less than 100 runs. 

Some people claim that they got constant butchery drop, some claim they always get butchery drop at last boss, some people say they always do premade run and they always get at least 1 butchery drop every run. We don't know who is lying or who is telling the truth but we do know this is a bad rng. If they don't want the hell dungeon to drop butchery gears then at least the last boss should drop 1 butchery soul. This silent nerf seems like they are trying to prolong the game until january with forced gear grind stoppage but what it is doing is stopping players from playing. the only people who "exploited" the "glitch" now have full butchery and they are being "nice" enough to sell +3 carry runs. this is just icing on the cake, they maxed out butchery set in 5 hours, people like me doing hell for 20-30 hours with boost with 0 drop. Just sad.

Well, Bill can be a bit too nice at times. In a system scored 1-10 the average really should be 5.5

That doesn't make sense.  A lot of those low scores never even get released and thus never get counted.  Of course the released games by experienced developers will avoid the low end of the scale.  It's more like school grading if anything, which rarely has people below 50
