Letter from the Chairman: Happy Holidays... and Thank You

jcrg99jcrg99 Member UncommonPosts: 723
Well... Roberts been Roberts:

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15138-Letter-From-The-Chairman

This televangelism is one of the biggest problems with this project and will impact it strongly, negatively, in the medium/long term. It's good to fed the wife's plan of immediate results, regardless the cost for the future, and making it work in the short term, which helps to boost her career I guess. A plan that is short-sighted, and close more doors than open, create more possibility of losing fidelity than winning, and is going to destroy the game reputation/company's reputation in the long term, in my opinion, due the big gap between the reality and their speech and offers/promises.

Wait and see.

Feel free to agree or disagree respectfully. But I am confident that I am right, since I have been vindicated since 2013. Hopefully I will be wrong in the end, but sounds too fantasy to me. Totally unreasonable considering the facts.

I dont see how Chris thanking everyone is a bad thing.

You probably read just one phrase of this big letter then.

"80,000 backers have explored Crusader in 2.0 in the week since its launch."

Interesting. For a highly anticipated game with "1 million+ citizens", people giving them regular 20k/day since always (that's kind of weird don't you think?), supposedly its majority buying a copy of the game, so earlier, knowing that is not going to come out in any time soon... a game in his definition, that now, is so great, better than completed games out there, this results are totally in discrepancy with his speech.

It shows a man that really does not pay attention to facts when evaluating or taking decisions. Or maybe just one fact he evaluates: "money... where's it... how can I get more money... whatever I have to say... I want money and I want it now".

Interesting too, how this level of participation never grows. It's basically, almost the exact number that were presented, for example, more than an year ago, when AC was released, weeks after its launch (in a patch notes that when I alerted by the weak level of participation, despite all the hype that they made around of the 'highly anticipated Arena Commander module', CIG stopped to add that stats in the following patch notes and made that disappear from he public eyes). I am pretty sure that from there to now, the size of the population, according with the "counter, is at least 3 times higher, still... the retention remains the same. Hmmmm.

Maybe you should spend your energy on something that actually matters, like politicians that you have voted for not keeping their campaign promises.

I have never in my life seen people so illogical about an unreleased game, so much speculation, assumptions and ego its astonishing.

As for the alpha participation numbers, many people are adults and as such dont have the time or patience to deal with a buggy game, so wait for release to make their judgment....[mod edit]

[mod edit] would understand what means a lack of grow in retention, for a game that is "highly anticipated" and waiting for release to try, is almost out of the reality to who decides to really back this so earlier, considering that no ETA exists.

People would give it a try. Even if just to test how the game behave in their machine, to have an idea. I don't need even to say that he is referring to accounts, since he never differentiate backers from individual people (and having multiple accounts is a common practice, specially between the earlier backers). This stagnant number is not good. But live in denial all that you want. Your choice.

In one statement Roberts changes the TOS for getting money refunded saying the game is released, then when someone states how the game is clearly not a game or even close to it people say to wait for it to release! You can't have it both ways!

I read the letter; it's an update. Missed the bit were CR said the game was released though just: "you can now see what Star Citizen will feel like and in 2.0".  I apologise if I cause offence but your post OP just comes across as drivel. Communication is essential; without "televangelism" as you call it there would be no SC because without promotion the game wouldn't be being made; and when you have threads like this it needs to be strong as well.

A better discussion would be e.g. "Does alpha 2.0 forms the basis of "a playable game?"

Key message (for me) in the letter: the adoption a monthly update / patch cycle. Whilst they are not going to adopt a fixed release schedule for individual elements as time passes we will be able to see (or not see!) what has happened / not happened not just in 1 month but over a 2, 3, 4 month period etc. This is a very powerful tool for silencing critics - but it is a double edged sword; and very sharp. If there is no progress the doomsayers will be able to  say they told everyone so. The converse is also true of course.

Thought it was a nice touch acknowledging non-SC teams as well.

Semantics. The game is still shit. Why don't they just hide for six months coding like little gremlins and show something?

Really have to laugh at the responses.

We show links and proof to problems with Roberts and the game.

Are attacked because from the start anyone that talks bad about Roberts or the game has to be silenced.

Show proof Roberts changed the TOS so he don't need to pay backers back. Attacked and called liars.

I could go on but, why this will be attacked and told to shut up yet the advertising for this non game will continue.

Which is OK because, the non game needs to keep the money rolling in.

Yet a lot of people believe the money made could also be faked.

If you think about it, if the advertising for the non game would stop all the other posts may stop until the game releases or at the least become a working real game product.

But no, shut us up but allow the scam to keep going forward.

That just does not sound fair or logical!

It also mean no one on this site should be allowed to talk negative on any game. Heck why even have an open forums!

Ok going back in my working game, let the attacks continue. Really sad if you think about it.

I cannot possibly agree with this sentiment more...between the OP and Brenics, their single-minded obsession with something they clearly dislike is tiresome.
While I agree with what you are saying you have to admit the other side is just as bad with Erillon or whatever his name is posting everyday like his life depended on it.  BOTH sides have their crazies.
Erilion is posting stuff mainly from SC's website like updates, patch notes, footage, CR's interviews and stuff like that. This is the SC section on these boards after all, is it not ?

Are you really comparing his posting with the mindless, unfounded hate and spite these two are writing ? Just make a survey about the number of threads these guys, especially Brenics, have created for even trivial and unimportant stuff.

If you guys would write negative about the game in a objectively way sometimes, no one would care much about it, but what you do is bashing mostly CR and you keep up your silly imputations withour proof, to keep your crusade moving.

Also you make new threads with new silly content in it, just to try convince people to believe what you say, that is sad.

But ya know, people on this forum are not that dumb, they can make their own opinions on this topic, if you like it or not, and as you can see seems your crusade not working out.

I have some experience here (wink wink)...

As long as fans feel so attached to the game that they have to respond and rebut every perceived slight, the attacks will continue.   Each and every game that will come out will have it's detractors.  That's OK!  That's healthy!  Don't agree?  Respond once or twice with your counter argument.  Just don't get so deeply attached that you feel personally affected by someone's negative gaming post.  Just let it go.  When folks stop responding, there is nothing to feed the fire.

Again.. I know more than a thing or two about these things...  You are never, ever going to win an internet slap fight.  Detractors don't care... they don't need to win, they just need to keep the flames burning.

Chris has the hopes and dreams of a lot of people on his shoulders and the same can be said of the developers working under him.   I want to damn well see that dream of his succeed and just wish people would stop it with demonizing kickstarter studios that are being open about their work.  Why do the publishers get off light when they delay a game, but the second an indie dev does and asks for more money they are the equivalent of satan himself?  How does this make any sense?!  At least they are giving people something tangible for their pledges toward the games development.

Number 1 rule in amateur psychology is to make it all about YOU.
I love when he says total rubbish like "Thanks to YOU we PROVED them wrong".

What has he proved so far that he can take 3 years to pull off the same amount of work any average team of 30 people could pull off in a few months? If this was Epic games they would already have 5x more work done and better and with 1/4 the staff. But guess what Epic has a business to run with THEIR own money,oh yeah easy for Chris to put out a below average effort because he is never losing any of his own money.

This game can turn out to be a 12/10 and absolute amazing hit,the best game to ever dawn the planet,it doesn't change the amateur job Chris has done to this point and that is not trolling as the young kids like to say, that is the truth.

Maybe perhaps at some point he turns the corner and we see a Triple A development studio in the works but i already sort of see a big not happening on that front.Instead he will continue to build  his coffers and turn what i render to be a 40-50 million dollar game that ends up using 120+ million worth over 200 million by normal development standards.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

This is SOP today.  It's all about creating an US vs THEM mentality. Folks in general identify too closely with their chosen game.  I like Chris Roberts.  I like the Star Citizen concept.  I really want Squadron 42.  I pledged some money....  but when someone wants to criticize the game I don't take it personally.  Everyone gets their own opinion and only time will tell whether CIG can deliver.

I'm curious to know what games. We have some info on Destiny, WS, WoW, TESO, SW BF, EQN, CU etc. etc. but clearly these are all wastrels. (And here was I think that Bungie had done a great job delivering Destiny a mere 2.5 years from contracting with Activision with a team that numbered over 540 at the end. Silly me heh!)

Don't forget though that will be starting from scratch. You have to raise the money, interview the staff, draw up contracts, rent offices and buy kit etc. before you start to actually do any code; and pay people as well of course along with other mundane business stuff. (A pain but people tend to dismiss it).

So can you give some examples?

And maybe check out the SC alpha 2.1 and give us a breakdown of what it should have taken. You know artwork ... 10 people for 3 months maybe (if everything could be done in a few months by 30 people the artwork on its own must be less); voice and sound a couple of people maybe? The non-financial stuff?

Its just that I am puzzled. In one thread I read that stuff can't be done, the engine won't hack it, it's impossible and then you come and enlighten us that everything to date 30 people, a few months.

Its opinion marked as opinion. With things like "personally", "IMHO", "I estimate" etc.  See the example you mentioned above : "...i estimate the number of genuine backers..."

When i quote something, i give a link  (unless this link has appeared many times in that thread already).

When it comes to insurance i gave examples from EVE Online or Elite:Dangerous (both games for the same target audience as SC) to extrapolate the situation in SC. In those games insurance stops being an issue after a few days or weeks into the game, depending on playstyle and intensity.

One day in the future Star Citizen will be used everywhere as an example of how money corrupts.  What used to be a great guy, with great ideas, is not nothing short of a a scam artist.

Being a huge Wing Commander fan, backing SC from start, it hurt me deeply, it really did, when ti came to a point where I had enough mismanagement and pyramid scheme like business model and ended up getting a full refund.

Sc, along with SWtOR and Vanguard will be forever an example of how not to make games (each for different reasons).
