IDK man i am on the fence with developers going to the old DDOS excuse, they could be honest but like i said i am not sold on the idea.
Hackers have to hijack several servers and then control them long enough like a whole weekend to bombard TESO servers?I could see perhaps for a few hours, but a whole weekend,i am not buying it at all.
What likely happened is their networking staff is on holidays and they are having problems with nobody to fix it.All they have to do is reset the servers and manually set a few IP address changes,to let it go on a whole weekend just sounds like amateur hour.
Not only that it is guaranteed jail time for those who get caught ,so they would have to be smart enough, but dumb enough to risk jail time for nothing?
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Too bad game companies don't have the funds to do what some military sites do when they get DDOSd, they launch a counter DDOS from several botnets to bring down the source botnets.
Fight fire with fire is actually pretty effective in this case.
Or, they could make the penalty for doing said attacks life imprisonment without possibility of parole. Until hackers are actually punished and not given and employment opportunity for such antics, they will continue to steal YOUR hard earned money for the sake of their OWN amusement.
Attacked, my ass, lol. They probably have their infrastructure overloaded becouse people are on holidays, and there is influx of new players, who got ESO as a present. Everytime the same excuse, and people still buy it, lol
Exactly what I been thinking. They haven't rebooted servers for last 2 Mondays. In fact last server reboot was on Dec. 17th for NA.

that is a cute theory but if that were the case the game would be lagging once you logged in. the issues were with logging into the game, not once you got in.

The issue was also in game. I had no trouble logging in but once I did my ping was 400-550 constant standing still. Many of my guild mates and zone chat had the same issue as well. Not sure when it started but it passed for me and guild and zone chat all at the same time.
So this definitely wasnt just overload for the holidays.
I must have gotten lucky. I played a lot throughout the DDOS period and never even knew there was anything amiss.

Life without parole? It is theft not murder or physical body attacks, might as well start giving the death penalty(sarcasm) but then we would be bordering on Hitler stuff. Not to mention it would cost people more with jail cost.
A more fitting punishment would be exile with no means of coming back, exiled to some island or planet with no internet or computers away from common law obeying people. Less cost on us and no more trouble from them.
When they were getting hit it really didn't matter what zone I was in. Was happening to all 4 of my characters and all were in different areas. Hard to believe anyone wasn't affected.

What zone were you playing in? I was in Orsinium. I am not sure of the zones my guild mates were in.
I was leveling yet another alt - Stamina Templar this time - through Grahtwood and Greenshade but I also logged in my crafters on my main account to make armor, weapons, food and runes - two of those were in Craglorn and the other two in Reaper's March so there was a lot of logging in and out happening and even changing accounts also. I never even knew there was a problem till I read it here and on Reddit after the fact.

The problem is there is no international law for this. So you track down the source group to China... guess what the Chinese government is not going to do squat.
Same goes for some countries in Europe that have a special protection status for people with mental disorders, all they get is a slap on the wrist because they won't incarcerate or extradite a minor with Asbergers for ddos.
This is just silly. You may feel that "some countries in Europe" does not punish computer related crimes suitably hard but to my knowledge all european countries consider instigating a DDOS attack a criminal offence = Punishable by imprisonment.
It IS true that most european countries try to avoid the extremely broad definitions and "over-prosecution" that seems to be the norm with laws governing IT in the US justice system.
I get just as annoyed as the next guy when I see someone get hit by DDOS and I will in no way defend the criminals behind DDOS. BUT: Just like banks use vaults and have surveillance/security measures in place (even though robbery carry harsh penalties) internet sites that rely on 24/7 operation should in the very least have plans to mitigate DDOS attacks.
Even if they don´t pay for full time protection, an emergency plan should describe how to identify the actual type of DDOS and the plan of action/mitigation in said case. Being "out" for a full weekend is simply unprofessional!
Mitigating DDOS and other types of distributed service disruption is not rocket science. Companies that do not plan for those kind of well known threats either have incompetent IT CEO's or are simply gambling to save some money.
We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!! (repeat ad infinitum)

that is odd because i seen in zone chat people were even saying that there was no issue in game lol
what megaserver do you play on?
i don't think i have ever had a ping like that except in cyrodiil at certain times.

NA.
It was probably only happening to certain server clusters that were being hit since not everyone was feeling it.
