Will this game have a mega server ?

I hope not, I like realms where I can get to know players.

i would guess it would follow brad's original philosophy of a few different servers with different rulesets.

i hope it launches with 4:  Pve, PVE-RP, Pvp, PVP-RP
i would have toons on both rp servers in this case.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

I plan on having a very very long friends list.

This I haven't had in a long time because of the carrot-on-a-stick game play of all the recent games. With this style you can never match up quest for quest.

Freedom to match up with others seems to be a thing of the past :(

Nope it wont.  like itchmon said, they will have shards, but few of them.  Enough to cover the basis of PvE, RP, and maybe PvP.  PvP has not been confirmed and may never come.  Or they may decide later to add a flag system if your interested.  Only time shall tell.  They also do believe in specialty type servers with special rulesets, so if things are successfull i would expect to see some special ruleset servers come alive (like eq1 progression servers etc..)

So I'll get to know real people in a Massive Multi Player Online Role Playing Game ?....This is incredible :)

Actually, PvP has been confirmed by Brad and the team many times, while always making it a point to say PvE is the main focus, and PvP mechanics will not affect PvE.

There was actually a post from last year (missing from the new forums) where Brad actually stated verbatim that they intended to launch with a PvP server, but since then they've moved to a position of "we have to wait and see how popular the game is near launch." It is understandable, but unless Pantheon launches simultaneously with multiple other PvP games (Crowfall, Camelot Unchained, Gloria Victis), there will be more than enough people to fill a few PvP servers at launch..

I agree with OP, I dislike mega servers. In GW2 and Elderscrolls I couldn't stand to see players next to me phasing in and phasing out. You're either here or you are not! lol.... just looked really goofy and was a negative for me... Glad Pantheon is not doing this...

PvP and PvE server would be perfect.  No mega servers

More smaller servers/shards with lower populations help player communities build and evolve, and because player communities and economies, people making real life friends in-game, and in general knowing the people (at least by reputation) that you are playing with is paramount to what Pantheon is all about, more smaller servers/shards is the plan.  And, as others have posted, we are indeed quite fond of alternate ruleset servers, providing the same core game, but with variations on the theme.  This also requires more, smaller servers as opposed to large mega servers with so many people playing on them that you have no idea who most people are.

Also, one of the nice things about having your servers/shards in the cloud is that you can add shards, combine shards, etc. very quickly and dynamically, reacting to how successful your game is, applying resources quickly and efficiently to support your player base, etc.  In the old days, when you had to have your own server farms, or contract with companies to host your own machines, this was all labor intensive and expensive, so the temptation to have fewer, more populated shards was ever present.  Thankfully, those days are in the past.
