"So they allow employees to take names to prevent players from selling names." I hope people realizes that with this statement alone, it shows just how sad the MMORPG genre has gone below rock bottom. And when GMs gets to pick character names, it just shows how the game will move forward from here, the GMs will play the game with epic gear on launch and that will make some people put cash on the P2W shop while others will just rage quit and move on to another game. Now my question, explain to me again why this game will be beyond mediocre? These are the kind of moves that KILLS a MMORPG in the West before it even releases, and to make matters worst, it's NCSoft, what else is new?
Its a name , big deal. I run into my name I usually use being taken in games all the time, I usually just add a vowel somewhere and end up with a better one anyways.
People paid extra for the right to reserve names and then they allow GMs to reserve names. Did they mention that when they asked for the extra money allowing you the right to reserve names that their GMs would get first pick ?
Not to be contrary but how many GMs could there possibly be and why shouldn't there be some perks for working for the company?
While I agree that perks for working for the company are good. Don't sell the same perk to customers only for them to find out that the name they paid to reserve cant be reserved. And since its bundled in a package there is nothing the person can do if they cant get the name they want and they feel jilted.
Ya ya I know, the name reservation doesn't have a dollar value attached but the whole thing still leaves the person who cannot get the name they wanted (and feel they paid for) jilted.
Well, it is a douchey practice at best. I played EQ since the 90s, GM had strict rules what they could and couldn't do. Grabbing names before customers can certainly wasn't something they were allowed to do.
Whoever said that GM hording names before paying customers can get access to the game, is "normal", is drunk.
20 people pay extra for early name reservation, 19 of them want the same name, do the other 18 complain and get their money back? I think not. what is the difference that GM's get there first, surely if they are associated in the making and running of a game they would be there before anyone else anyway? Just my thoughts over what has always been since I started mmo'2 in 2000
You don't think SoE employees didn't reserve names in EQ1 - Aradune was reserved before launch.
Aradune was Brad Mcquaid, the main developer of the game, What does that have to do with GM.
GM in EQ are volunteers, they're not developers or even employees.
And the developers use names on beta servers only, like Prathum for example, you can get that name on a blue server. The beta servers are separated from the regular servers, even from Test.
GM hording names before the launch of an MMO is not normal at all.
If anyone says they went from the 25 dollar pack to the 75 dollar pack purely for the chance at a name i would find it hard to believe. Now it was a perk on the 2 higher packs, but i doubt that it would of swayed anyone if it was there or not.
When I pay for a game (After it's been released) I expect that names get used. Then, I find a new one. But yeah, that only works if you don't buy into "Founders Packs"
Maybe telling your customers "I don't really care about what people think frankly" or "Now off course it's unfair", probably isnt the best thing lol.
But yea, as if people need more reasons to keep away from these so called founders packs.
To be fair that tweet is a direct response to the person calling him unoriginal and a troll, not a general answer about not caring. Not that i condone what was done, but i dont see it different then any other game that i've been in early name reservation

No, GM's were employees. In the early days each server had a dedicated GM, and there were a few that were game-wide. I'm pretty sure they had to create their accounts before the game started up in proper, so they probably got to pick names before everyone else.
Guides were the volunteers. They had drastically less power in the game. I could dig out my old guidebook, but I'm almost certain they did not have the power to change someone's name, or to reserve names (apart from the same way to reserve names that everyone else has access to). In fact, it was against policy to have characters other than your Guide character on the server for which you were the Guide on - to prevent conflicts of interest from arising. Note, none of that necessarily applies to GMs, which were paid employees.
And for this to even be a pertinent example, it would have to be restricted to ~only~ those GMs before final release. However, I'm pretty sure GM's still retain the power to change someone's name in most games, so I suppose they could be in some evil conspiracy to just keep stealing their favorite names.
No, its is normal. if you look on the redit post at spawned all of this you will see the GM in question looks to have taken the same name on each server. So not ac much 7 names as 1 name across the servers. I don't see it as a problem, its a perk for being a GM.
I know for a fact that in DAoC we did it, in EQ2 they did it, and in Aion the GM's did the same things. Its really is normal.
I do believe this is normal.....It's also not an issue. They are employees not founders.
Either way, if it weren't for people who paid for Founder's Packs, this whole issue wouldn't even be worth a mention at the bottom of someone else's necro'd thread much less going on 3 pages under its own topic.
While I can see the side of people working at a game company getting to reserve names, I can also see that any company that wants to be more "customer centric" would put customers first.
Perhaps allowing gm's one name they can reserve before anyone else would be better.
Or better yet, allow them to reserve a "gm name" give them free access to the game but they have to deal with name reservation like anyone else if they are a player.

No idea what it is but 90% of all people naming themselves Naruto are absolutely retarded.

Make some sense, jesus.
As the dude would say, theyre not wrong in doing so, just assholes.
