I also want to add- now that it's pretty much established that this game excels at game-play--...I love that they drew so much inspiration from Berserk (the anime series) in how they designed the looks of things, as well as kept the old Folk lore imagery of the beasts within the game. Another area that is great is the outfits and armor layering system in place. I don't think there is a game out there that has a better look for the armors/outfits in the open world RPG genre.
Yep this game is like being in Record of Lodoss War for me, one of my favorite anime.
On a side note, it's really cool how the perishable types of items actually perish, but you can preserve them for longer via combining. I found that out the hard way. Fortunately I sold them before they went completely bad. A lot of thought went into the game systems.
I'm not 100% sure but I think they can be preserved longer or forever if put in storage. Because I had some fish in the there for a while that didnt rot when I got back and checked.
And a question... group healing from Anodyne only restores some health (up to the white bar max.) If you want to restore the pawns' health beyond that you need to use potions, herbs, etc. Problem is that if you give the pawns healing items there doesn't seem to be a way to make them use it... or am I missing something?
Although you can use items that heal entire party
Yeah I noticed that I accidentally made a "perfume" that does that when messing around combining items... now if I could only figure out how I did it
Go through items in your inventory and select combine. If you've done a previous combine it will show you what item is needed for the result. That should help try and locate it. You only need to find one of the ingredients to see what else you need as a combination. Sometimes though I think there are multi-step combines and that can get tricky.
I also made a perfume. I'll try and see if I can figure that out again when I get home.
I found spamming bow skills drains stamina really fast. I'm still fairly early on in the game (lvl 6) so I have some time to figure out how I want to branch. My main companion is a support mage. I figure I need to hire a tanky type and another damage dealer.

Perishable types is how I would do it. It adds another level to the game. Hopefully they don't change that due to "loud feedback".

You can't make them use it, but if you give them some healing items they will use them to restore health (or stamina) when they get low (pawn inclination may have an impact on their tendency to use items including healing items, but not 100% sure). I usually give them some potions/herbs after combat if the white health bar is getting dangerously low.
Or like others have said make some of the group heals.
On that note, isn't the crafting great? I have never seen it done in quite this way before, you really have to get into the lore of the world, experiment and find out what things do; go hunting for certain upgrades and the like.

They won't be changing anything that isn't a major bug. It's a port of a PS3 game, it's a done deal.

How is the crafting done? I have yet to run into any crafting.
Also, in response to Iselin, I found out I couldn't really heal my party so gave them some items. One of them eventually used one of the items. I'm not sure what prompts them to do so.

Go into your items menu and select an item and select combine, then it will show you which item you can combine with but wont tell you what it will make until after you make it. It will have the question mark if you dont have the items it can combine with unless you already discovered the recipe.

And the other type of crafting to improve weapons and armor is done at the blacksmith vendor under "improve item." Some rare items are needed for the better upgrades and it will pull them out of your inn stash if it's there.
I started messing around crafting some non-consumables and made myself a skeleton key The crafting is deep. It's all done on a "discovery" basis... just try combining.
And as far as group healing goes, once you find a healing spring you'll want to have some empty vials and fill them up there (or drop a port crystal there, go stock up on empty vials and go back.) The spring water is a group heal for ~ 300 HP.

Now that I've given all of my pawns 10 Spring Water flasks each, group healing is not even an issue. Either I or they will use them for party heals... which is very nice since now I have to rezz them far less often and I stopped carrying a low DPS healer buffer pawn around.
This is a great game. I'm having a hard time putting it down... and the Magic Archer's Ricochet Hunter skill in dungeons is hard to beat

Make sure you get some skin softeners for everyone if you fight a cockatrice. Petrification is not a joke in this game. Neither is blindness.

Yeah, I was leveling in Blade and Soul but really kept thinking about this game so logged out and played this instead. It's excellent. And good to know about the Spring Water Flasks and "lotion".

What are your pawn's names? I want to see if I can check them out. My pawn is called Yoru and is a female Ranger atm. I think I need to sit her down in the knowledge chair and have a word with her though, she seems to be overly fond of getting too close to combat despite being ranged.

My primary pawn is a mage. I have 1 healing skill on him and the rest are buff/debuff and dps skills that complement the party. I'm still figuring it out. The game is easy to pick up, but seems pretty hard to master. It is a hard game to put down. I just haven't gotten a chance to play much.
What is your class, primary pawn, and party build?
I started out as a mage, checked out the sorcerer for a bit and then tried the magic archer. I liked the magic archer a lot and am sticking with it so far (I'm in the low 30s now.) It's a unique hybrid that lets you chose 2 of 3 weapon types to use and train: mage's staff, dual daggers and the magic bow... so far I've been using the staff and bow for a fully ranged character. This bow, unlike the normal one that Striders and Rangers use, does not fire projectiles, it shoots spells based on magic damage... it's really just a 3rd mage-like class.
My main pawn has been a fighter all along trained as a tank guardian (and I have to say, I have never seen a better taunt animation for tanks in any other game... love the realism of banging the sword against the shield to attract attention.) I usually round out my party with a ranger and a sorcerer pawn now that I have a better way of healing than the mage's anodyne.
As a matter of fact once you start to use flasks of spring water for party heals, which heal up to your full health, not just the white portion of the health bar and is a cheap easily renewable resource (by plopping down one of your port stones by the healing springs,) I'm having a hard time understanding the cast time and limits of the mage's healing skill - it seems cumbersome by comparison. The spring water even also heals any NPCs you have with you in escort quests.

If you are in the 30s see if you can find my Ranger pawn (Yoru), she does a good job for me and is pretty well geared. I am using a fighter and mage pawn, a mage with fire enchant for weapons is a godsend. Btw the fighter pawn I am currently using is amazing, her name is Freya. She taunts well, climbs on big enemies, calls out tactics against large monsters, and is almost indestructible.
I went fighter then assassin and am playing on hard mode. I have been using sword/bow with assassin, the sword does great damage, but it lacks the defense and utility of daggers so its easy to get killed if I get surrounded.
I just got the final assassin sword skill "great gouge", which basically drives your sword deep into anything you are climbing and does massive damage. I get to try that out today.
If you are in the 30s see if you can find my Ranger pawn (Yoru), she does a good job for me and is pretty well geared.
My main pawn's name is Lara and she's good tank fighter.

I tried to find her, but I can't search by pawn name as far as I can see, but thanks for the info. I just played the 2013 version of Tomb Raider, so a Lara would be pretty cool.
I have to say, I've been having the best time in this game.
Some highlights were fighting a Troll. on a cliff side only to have both troll and myself go over the edge. Both of us died. Was very cinematic.
Last night I decided to go back to the starter town and finish a quest (to capture a thief which actually was pretty fun) when I took a quest to escort an npc to an area of the map I had never been to before
On my way I kept trying to find alternate routes as I knew if I was to engage any large monsters (I actually had seen the weird Lion, Goat, Snake thing on a path ahead) I knew the npc would be killed.
Just when I was close to my destination, a dragon spotted me (I really thought I had avoided it) and what transpired was a mad dash through goblins, going back for my healer, and avoiding the dragon that kept following me.
I really felt like I was in one of those movies where "your band" had to make it home through enemy territory and you knew it was going to be hopeless.
In any case, my pawn's name is Odette and is a healer with some fire damange, fire attunement (can light your weapons on fire) as well as being able to give you holy damage.
I just swapped out one of her skills and added some sort of buff/shield that will protect you from magic. Going to venture out in the night time to an area where previously these skeleon "things" rose out of purple light and were impossible to kill (more running. I think I find running for my life very fun in these games),
Interestingly, when I went back to the starter town I "heard" someone call from inside the well (I had previously helped a guard next to the well in a quest involving going down in the well) and another quest triggered down there.

Same... I'm level 53 now and working my way through some post-dragon fight Granys quests before I head over to Bitterblack Isle for a peek... it's a much darker and tougher world now

I actually went there at a really low level. Wasn't sure what it was but as soon as I spoke to the npc that greets you I decided I was probably way over my head.
My character is only 27 but I spent most of the day on Sunday playing this game. Then logged in last night to see something and went to bed muuuuuuch to late.
