Microsoft to stop almost all updates to non-Windows 10 OS versions for Intel Skylake processors.

"If you own a system with an Intel 6th generation Core processor—more memorably known as Skylake—and run Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you'll have to think about upgrading to Windows 10 within the next 18 months. Microsoft announced today that after July 17, 2017, only the "most critical" security fixes will be released for those platforms and those fixes will only be made available if they don't "risk the reliability or compatibility" of Windows 7 and 8.1 on other (non-Skylake) systems."

Well giving people an 18 months warning is rather fair of them though.

I've read it as well today and find it a bit odd... It means that buying the latest CPUs forces you into WinX, while not upgrading you'll get support for Win7/8x till 2025 or so...

I guess they expect people who are going with newer cpus to go with the newest OS as well.
Personally I only just went through with the update 2 weeks ago and after removing their privacy invading nonsense I'm fine with it.
Fine as in:  It feels exactly like win7 so I don't have reasons to complain.

The Windows 10 popup hits my screen everyday and each day i say no way. This is going to be a huge backdoor to problems, that is why they are offering it for free,no liabilities that way.
Well also by offering it for free they hope to get more people on board to sort of silently squash the competition, only i see it as an eventual fail.
Sooner or later a lot of bad media is going to come of this and may spell the demise of Windows, nothing stays at the top forever, just ask Julius Caesar, just ask Peanut Butter and jelly sandwiches...oh wait they still rule !!! :pleased:

They want everyone on windows 10 to data mine people what they do everyday, there as been a few update from windows 10 if you even try to run off there spyware microsoft just go's around turn them back on. Just been sneak latey so people don't even know what there date mining and how much info there are getting. But yeah does make sense to kill off older OS but will not stop people from holding on to a older OS until it's broken.

But on the gaming side is better be on windows 10 if people want newer and better game running on DX12.

I'm on a valid license Win 7 and haven't received any attempt to get me to upgrade to Win 10. Then again I've been careful about which MS updates get installed to my system.

This one is the most recent attempt: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2952664
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2952664)

Install this update to resolve issues in Windows. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more information. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

How about they fix windows 10 so it isn't a piece of crap first before they stop support for the older OS's? Just once I'd like to see them actually release something that resembles a retail product and not something that takes 2 years to "fix" before it actually works. People are putting win7 and win8 on new pc's because win10 is not ready for prime time yet. Too many glitches and compatibility issues still. No games run DX12 anyway, so there really is no advantage to getting win10 for gamers right now. I guess 18 months is when they expect win10 to actually be a solid product. They might be giving themselves too much credit.

I run Windows 10 at home, works etc.. Never seen one glitch of any substance. I hightly doubt the vilidity of your statement.

Have Win7 as well, I do have that GWX.exe running along with that Get Windows 10 icon on the taskbar, but somehow it's not bothering me with the pop-up that I MUST install it. On my son's PC however (8.1) he's getting that annoying pop-up each time he boots his PC and he immediately clicks it away...

For people already using Win 10, Spybot Search and Destroy have created an anti beacon program that will undo most of MS's datamining, some of it is re-enabled after patches, even things that were manually turned off, so its worth running it regularly to check your still protected, just have to make sure you get the version from Spybots own domain, as there are quite a few dodgy imitations with attached malware.

    I think this is wrong.

I can understand and agree with Microsoft when they announce that new upcoming hardware won't be supported, but there are already people who purchased Win 7 or 8 + Skylake trusting it would be supported. If something won't get supported it must be told before people have bought it, not afterwards.

I am a fan of Linux, but the problem is that as yet, the games i play, particularly the MMO's arent supported by linux, well other way around really, but if that ever changes, i am totally on board for switching.
Well maybe one day we'll have a credible alternative to Windows, but, its not the Mac, nor Chrome, and much as i might wish otherwise, i don't think its Linux either, there just doesn't seem to be the willpower to develop for it.

Just wait until windows 10 has been almost universally adopted and Microsoft announces the new subscription plan for continued security updates and support.  Its coming...

I have the new Skylake 6600k and refuse to get Win 10 until they force me to.

Win 7 may be older, but far superior atm based on what I have seen and read and from my experience.

I have to keep closing that "Free Win 10 Upgrade" Icon about every 3 days. :)

When the time comes, I will switch, until then...Win 7 > ALL.

I recommend Linux for anyone wanting freedom within their own OS, it's completely free. Linux Mint with cinnamon desktop is what I'd recommend to anyone trying for the first time, you can install it side by side with Windows and see how you like it.

This is only for enterprise customers afaik.

There is no "support" for normal customers anyway.

Yeah, because, out of the box, they don't track you at all *eyeroll*. It's not like you're any less tracked or monetized or invisible unless you go through the extensive hoops and hurdles to erase your tracks.

What exactly does Linux offer you with regards to functionality or freedom, on the desktop, that you don't get from OSX or Windows? Let's leave niche server usage out of the discussion.
Sure you're always going to be tracked in various ways, you can minimize it with a VPN and browser addons like noscript, https everywhere etc. The way Microsoft have been pestering Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10 with popups etc and downloading things in the background without the users knowledge is something I will not accept from an OS.

They're going up against a culture that has mostly gotten use to not upgrading.  Most have learned to skip upgrades or wait until they need major systems upgrades or replacements.  Not counting companies and agencies that paid a fortune for propitiatory software that would have to be upgraded or rebuilt for win 10.  If I was an IT guy about to retire I'd just leave things the way they were until I'm gone and let the next guy handle it.

But you will accept being monetized by the Mint team (Banshee, Duck Duck Go, packages (there are a couple of packages installed by default that generate revenue through internet activity). That's nice. If that OS works for you fine, but it's sort of hypocritical take the moral highground here especially when Mint doesn't make that obvious or easy to research.
Yes I don't mind DuckDuckGo as the default search engine and a media playback application coming with a free OS. They are very open about that as well if you read the official user guide and their site. I am free to use something else if I want.

Read this for example on their site: http://www.linuxmint.com/searchengines.php

I have a pro-tip for you. They don't need you on Win10 to datamine you. No one does. Welcome to distributed networking.
For sure they do to make to most money they need people on windows 10. Microsoft want more people to datamine windows 10 have all type of program build in just to see what your doing all the time. Yeah one can just turn them off but find it funny they when people try to turn off the spyware in windows 10 microsoft went there way to turn them back on.

I never had an issue with Win 10. Its a more stable user friendly version of Windows 8 which is a more stable better performing version of Windows 7. If you are on a Windows version you are going to get data-mined period unless you are on Windows XP. Just rest assured its not as bad as Googles or Apples. Linux is a different story.
Also new processor support going to the latest distros is nothing new. You need Windows 8 to get AMD bulldozer cores to work correctly.
