<snip> I think TR's largest problem was Richard Garriot's insistence on scrapping everything one too many times which massively drove up development costs (he did this like 2 - 3 times of the course of it). So when it didn't make a buttload of cash and had wasted a bunch of money they kind of just shut it down at that point (I followed TR from it's initial reveal and was actually saddened that garriot deviated so far from his original vision for the game)
Set in space - check; fps shooter - check; mmorpg like - check; huge hit - 20 million players as of last September - check; published by NCSoft - nope.

What in the hell are you talking about with 20 million players mmorpg set in space? Tabua Rasa NEVER pulled those numbers nor has any mmorpg ever including world of warcraft. Tabula Rasa has also been shut down since 2009. I'm not exactly sure why you are responding to my comment with a bunch of literally nonsensical things like at all. Tabula Rasa wasn't a fps, though it was a third person shooter like game and it was an MMORPG.
You must be talking about an entirely different game and genre though as what you are saying makes literally no sense otherwise
If they remade SWG with like the new unreal 4 engine... Sign me up and take my money
Even people from Rift want there game on unreal 4 engine but the cost for doing so not sure who will pick up that tab with alot risk. I think if someone still have the game SWG or CoH if they can add the model in to the unreal 4 engine even the maps then touch it up I bet may look awesome.
Ahh nostalgia! The lens through which all seems wonderful and past transgressions are forgot.
Of course they were wonderful games! That's why they were shut down!
'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.

City of Heroes all the way for me. The whole shutdown was a travesty too, since Paragon Studios let it slip that the game was still quite profitable. To the point where those devs tried to buy themselves free of their tyrant publisher, NCSoft, and keep things going on their own.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
I played TR when it was in beta, and did not like it. Also played WAR, and thought it was too soon after and too close to WoW (not as much a clone as it was a twin born a few months later).
Played: E&B, SWG, Eve, WoW, COH, WAR, POTBS, AOC, LOTRO, AUTO.A, AO, FE, TR, WWII, MWO, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, NWO, WoP, RUST, LIF, SOA, MORTAL, DFUW, AA, TF, PFO, ALBO, and many many others....

They're called private servers.
Actually SWG pre-CU is being recreated by the SWGEmu team. You need to have your original disks but they they provide a pre-CU server (slowly getting things added) . It is playable as is, and you are allowed 9 or 10 characters (for testing purposes of course).
I still miss COH and COV ... Out of all .. that is the one I would like back most.
You and me both! Nothing has filled the void left by CoH for me.
---------------------
I miss COX as well. My SG was active all the way to the end, and even as aged as the graphics are, if they brought it back I would play it in a second.
Valiance online is in pre-alpha (very pre) and is barely playable. But you can check it out. I estimate 2.5 years to a full release.
City of Titans is looking really really good, and I expect this one to get to late alpha/ early beta testing late in 2016. This one has a lot of ATs with sub-ATs, and should be worth checking out.
Heroes and Villains is the one that I am most excited about. What we have seen looks really good, and they have a good lore developing. This one will likely be the one most like City of X in execution and play. I think we won't see early alpha testing on this one until late in 2016, and the full release will likely be late in 2017 or early on 2018.
The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

Of that list, I can only imagine fans of CoH and SWG still wanting their game back after all these years.
swg still has a active private servers its emulated now like project1999 if you can get the disks and google around you will find the. Surprise vanguard didnt get a mention that game was aweosome.
I would love to have Tabula Rasa back. I was playing it early on in the alpha, one of the last true ones, and loved it. It had so much potential... I'd love to see an official return for CoH and SWG also. Aside from that I still play Earth & Beyond and have very fond memories of playing it in phase 4 until sunset.

Aw yiss. Rocking those mobs with a controller. And spamming those macro'd shouts at people. Good times. :p
Dont forget running all the way to Freeport on foot just to yell for your friends and defend it from the Black Orc Raids. I wish that game would have gotten a pc port. i would have never left it for WoW all those years ago.
SWG does not deserve to be on place one.
by the time it was shut down, it was only a shade of it's former self, dumped down from one of the brightest stars, to the mere basics of the genre.
pitty they did the jump to warcraft in the late run.

To each their own, I guess... in my case, WAR, Matrix and SWG wouldn't even be on the list. My (short) list: 1. AA. The first experience is always memorable I guess. The first time I bumped into the fact what MikeB details in the intro, that an MMO can always disappear over night, even if it's "in the green", if it has something to do with F-tards like Ncsoft. Beyond that, it was a very fun game to play, both in the car and on foot, fun missions, detailed car "gearing", different handling based on terrain and weight and speed, etc. 2. close second, CoH. Agree with MikeB, it was unique, fun, very free in character building. It brought me back to the genre (since I left after that craptard UO). I still like and support Cryptic, partly because of their good work with CoH. (and I'm quite puzzled with Mike's "Paragon Studios came out of nowhere in 2004 with an MMO" opening, you ment Cryptic, right?) It's only my second place because when Cryptic left for CO I've left too, and while I went back a few years later, I only played it as one of my 2nd level games. Still, it was a shame they cancelled it. Just like AA, it was killed by those Ncsoft F-tards, while it was in the green.
3. a long empty space, I mostly miss just those two. 4. Vanguard. Great ideas (crafting, diplomacy), clunky and buggy implementation. Maintenance mode for years, and even the f2p switch couldn't revitalise it. Writing was on the wall, still it was a sad day when they switched it off. 5. TR. So much fun, and so many bugs... Nice ideas. With it Garriot almost make it up for that abomination he did with the Ultima name at least for me. Obviously rushed launch, and an obviously too early cancel, again by Ncsoft... damn them. It had the potential to grow into a cool game. Anyways, at least SotA looks promising

Even Free Realms would deserve it more than TR IMO. Tabula wasn't even really finished. Was a unique title to be sure but I wouldn't call it a "best" anything due to its condition before shutdown.
SWG crafttting + SWG talent trees + New Engine = http://store.steampowered.com/app/422940/ all this needs is more backers ive payed in the hope they will continue to develop it. and that it will create the noise for other companies to listen to
Good list, do agree with others though that Earth and Beyond should also be there, it was a fun game, and the crafting wasn't too bad either, Merchant Prince ftw!

Right now there are 3 spiritual successors to CoX coming up;
City of Titans http://cityoftitans.com/ (Unreal 4 engine)
Valiance Online http://valiance.shogn.net/game/play (Unsure of the engine, but it looks like an updated version of the one used for Champions Online)
Heroes and Villains http://www.heroes-and-villains.com (HeroEngine2)
