I am just wondering if there is anyone just starting the game that wants to learn it together. I just started playing a few days ago, and while I am having fun it kinda sucks doing it alone. Let me know if you are interested and I can send a trial invite if you like. (EDIT: If you are looking for a trial invite click HERE)

And if you have tried EvE and didn't like it, lets talk about why? What was your barrier, or issue to the game?

A game like this is not for new players.  If you can hook up with some vets, who can tell you what you need and outfit you, great, but for the most part as a new player you are loot.

And this is why new people do not start the game.... *sigh*

When I was a new Eve Online player, I admit it was the hardest game I ever tried playing.  But I stuck with it and learned by reading the massive amount of new player information easily available at numerous websites.  I've been playing for a few years now and love the game.  I never thought of myself as "loot" when I was new, but as others have said in the past - you get out of Eve what you put in.

Just some advice that helped me enjoy my time in EVE as a new player - some may not apply to you of course.

First and most important, join a corporation.  You absolutely need the guidance of helpful players.  The universe will seem like a very boring place if you don't have people explaining everything you can do.

Second, you need to make use of out-of-game information.  My favorite source was always "ISK: The guide" both volume 1 and 2.  I do not know if they are fully updated since I stopped playing, but the information within will still be relevant.  There is an absolutely massive amount of information here, don't think you need to read it before playing or having fun.  This is something to read when you have time, there is always more to learn about EVE.  I made the PDF into an EBook so I could read it on my phone / tablet whenever I was in the mood, the download is free.  http://www.isktheguide.com/

Third, the lore behind EVE is not conveyed in quests.  The quests are random excluding a few chains, and in general they are kind of lacking.  As someone who loves lore, I was very disappointed by this.  Fortunately, there is really really good news for lore heads:  EVE has BUCKETLOADS of well written fiction to convey the lore behind the universe.  There are books you can buy, but I recommend you save your money until you are done with the large amount of free stuff available in the EVE Chronicles.  If you enjoy lore like I do, these are a real treat.  Each image here leads to a short story.  http://community.eveonline.com/backstory/chronicles/

Fourth, you need to figure out what you want to do in the game.  Making your own goals and working towards them is a core part of playing EVE.  What you want to do is strongly tied to specific ships - you aren't going to be a mission runner in your orca, and you aren't going to be a miner in your tengu.  Figure out what you want to do, see what ship you need and start planning your skills.  There are a few skill planners out there, but evemon is the best.  If you quickly learn to make your own goals, you will have a good time in EVE.  http://evemon.battleclinic.com/

Fifth, if you decide you want to run the games missions, make sure you look them up at eve-survival first.  Never go into a mission unprepared for the NPCs there.  This will help you set up your ship to tank the hits, and plan how to do optimal damage while surviving.  http://eve-survival.org/

Finally, you need to learn to accept failure and loss.  EVE punishes players for making mistakes far more than any other game, and as you are learning the game you are quite likely to be making mistakes.  Make sure you are NEVER flying in a ship you cannot afford to lose.  Make sure you insure your ships, they will be lost.  Learn to treat every frustrating failure as just a part of playing the game, and always learn from them.  You will get ganked, you may get scammed, you will lose one-on-one duels if you manage to get them, you will have people steal from your cans, you will have people blow up your mining ship for no reason, you will have people scan and blow up your transports for the goods inside, you will have people scan down your mission to steal your salvage or even attack your mission runner, basically any kind of negative impact another player could possibly have on your experience is something that WILL occur.  When these things happen, stay cool.  Message the player responsible, ask them how to explain how they got you and how to avoid it in the future.  The vast majority of the population will give you tips after they have blown you up.

Edit:  Also, not advice for a new player, but you asked what people dislike about it.  Even with all the good times I had in EVE, I still do not recommend it right now.  The dev team takes advice from players, and it is currently only listening to players in huge nullsec alliances.  The devs have minds of their own, of course, but this doesn't help things.

The very interesting aspects of the game are all controlled by enormous alliances with no way for smaller alliances to ever challenge them.  The combat is absolutely terrible, not only boring but just about impossible to enjoy.  As you try different things to find what you like, you get punished by other players because you make decisions you had no idea were mistakes.

Nearly everyone in EVE is looking for a way to ruin someone's day - whether it be by gate camping (there was always one gate in a sector that was camped by a bot that just spammed smartbombs endlessly, if you picked the wrong gate you died... he would get your pod too because it spams so quickly), running a scam, ganking miners, or anything else they can think up.  Only in EVE will a player spend 8 hours motionless doing literally nothing in the game just to blow up a new players ship when they come through the gate.

Though there are plenty of 'legit' ways for players to wreck your experience, there are also major bugs that remain unpatched and ignored that scammers take advantage of (NEVER NEVER EVER USE THE TRADING SYSTEM, ONLY TRADE THROUGH THE MARKET... and even then there are scams you can run through market bugs).

A majority of what any player does in EVE (gate camping, mining, mission running, whatever) is incredibly boring.  You may start EVE because you want to be an awesome lowsec pirate, but after your pirate corp and you spend 4 hours running through low sec and not finding anybody, you may change your mind and try something else - only to find that whatever you decide to try is equally boring.

So yeah, I do not recommend EVE right now.

yea, or simply do NOT go to lowsec ^^
whatever reason they name you. do NOT go into zones lower than .5 security.

the simple rule: don't fly it if you can't afford to lose it.
you MIGHT lose it in pve. but believe me, you try pvp, and you WILL lose it :surprised:

I will say something opposite. Go to null sec, lowsec, dont stay in 'safe' space for too long. Explore, learn and observe. This is a game. Dont be that scared guy who just sticks to the comfort zone for the whole time he plays this game then this one time after a year he goes to 0.0, gets blown out and whines on forums, then quits :D

There are alot of resources available to new players. @Baitness mentioned quite a few but you may also find others useful such as https://www.eve-central.com. Eve central allows you to compare market prices across Eve. This can be helpful for you to see where to sell your loot. Do your research make friends and then in time you will be able to take on stronger and stronger adversaries.

I'm new to eve as well though I've had my account for a little over a year. I just setup skill training and that's it. I'll start playing when I have skill enough to do something I enjoy :)

Yup. I'm another "new guy" who soloed his way in (or rather used to be in 2012 and I'm  still playing). There's no such thing as being loot to someone - if you don't want to be. But if you go and mindlessly throw yourself at other players while refusing to learn mechanics, than that was your choice and you really can't blame anyone else.
It's entirely possible to have the same fun as 1 day or 10 years old toon, IF you understand that this is a real MMORPG where journey (and living and exploring a new universe) is most of the fun, not some WoW clone made for instant gratification generation which hands out everything on a platter in a month time.

I feel sorry for people who create such artificial limits for themselves. I understand tho, it's a human trait, oh so present in real life and that's why more people play themeparks too, because it's easier. But to go and willingly project these personal psyhic anomalies onto others is just sad. Like the guy in the 3rd post down.

It's not worth joining at this point, sadly.    I am not an EVE hater, or fanboi.   I'm just vetted.  I started playing in 2003 and have finally decided to never go back after this last stint recently.

All details aside, it's just not worth the time and effort for a new player anymore.  The development absolutely 100% cares not for making the game fun and enjoyable for new players.   They want only those with deep pockets, and a sadist attitude to enjoy their game.     It's supported directly and indirectly, and it's never been a fact that they hide or lie about.

Trust me, your time is better spent playing a game you ENJOY instead of playing something you have to study.  Especially considering that even if/after you are no longer a flying lootbox, the only gratification to be had is turning in to a prick and making life miserable for anyone else brave(stupid?) enough to join EVE now after all these years of developmental turmoil, greed, and trolling.

The learning curve is astronomical, and when you finally reach the "Aha! I get it!" moment, you'll have no other choice than to puff out your chest and become the neckbeard know-it-all like the rest of us EVE vets...   Aspiring to be an elitist jerk should not be anyone's goal.

EVE is not a game.  It is a sci-fi premised Social, political, and economic simulator.   It's not fun.   It's engaging.   It's deep.  It's overwhelming.   It's frustrating.  It's a lot of things... it's just not FUN.   Anyone who says it's fun is going to tell you "its fun once you're in a good corporation" blah blah blah, but really...  How many MMORPGs are NOT fun when you join the 'right' Guild?     Smh.
    Goodluck.

Would that not be, It is not fun for you!? I am enjoying Eve thoroughly... even though my corporation is at war, and I am watching local like a hawk while running missions... I am enjoying it. I understand being burned out, and feeling like the game is bad, however you have been playing since 2003.... how can you say the game is not fun? Did you always hate it?

Just to be clear;  This guy is telling a new player that EVE is fun as he "watches" his local chat channel in game, waiting for ANYONE to pop in so he can then tell people in a separate chat channel "Someguy" just entered "some system" ---   The same thing as watching an empty chat channel waiting for someone to join, and when they do.... . not talking to them, but instead, reporting in another chat channel that someone is present.    Fun.

Also, it's pretty messed up to glorify mission running when it's widely known that EVE's PVE content is terrible.     That's like telling a new player "hey, mining is fun! just don't burn out!" ....

It's a very lonely game for beginners
  • Big.Daddy.SamediBig.Daddy.Samedi Member UncommonPosts: 411
You know what, I am not even going to bother. Your argument becomes pretty much null and void when it revolved around telling me what I am enjoying. We get it, you are burned out, and instead of answering my questions you instead to tell me what I enjoy.

And yet you say I am glorifying something.... I am glorifying nothing, I am simply stating what I am enjoying. The entire point of my thread was to see if anyone interested in starting wanted to join me. Now I am sitting here watching vet players basically telling people to stay away. There is a ton of info around here for people to decide whether or not the game is for them, I was just looking for people to play with on an even level.

But you know what, I don't really care. This thread has devolved to the usual MMORPG.com hatred and bitterness that I try so very hard to not be a part of. So thank you everyone for your input.

Well in all fairness enjoying EVE (which I do) is not the same to me as "having fun" (which I do, but not in EVE)

Well until there is another Space/SciFi MMO I am sticking with EvE. I am burned out on fantasy games, especially when single player games do them so well.

I've been playing various computer games for many years and I think Eve is a lot of fun.  People I play with have made it clear to me that that are also having fun playing Eve.  There are many facets to the game and depending on where you are with your character development/training, some things may be more or less appealing, but this changes over time.  PvP fleets are fun, mission running is fun (story arcs/COSMO missions), and mining can be fun with the right group of people and objectives.  I also enjoy a game with a steep learning curve.  That said, the game is over 10 years old and I can see why some people have become burned out - however, I'm having a blast and I've been playing for 4 years.

I think it's a good idea to keep perspective of how Eve is different from other games.  I saw a quote here some time ago that read something like this:  "When playing WoW, you think about what you are going to do in the game next weekend.  When playing Eve, you think about what your are going to do over the course of the next year."    It's a different kind of game.

I just went back to Eve this week.  So did my wife and a few of my gaming buddies.

I started over as I could not remember much about how to play so I started with a fresh clone.  Let me tell you, a lot has changed.

First.  The new player experience is vastly different.  Veteran attitudes towards new players seem to be different as well, if you need help you will get it.  If you liked eve at all at any point I recommend checking it out, there is far too much to describe here but I will give you one key to success:

When you get in game and get set up, you will be cruising along in your "Rookie" Ship and some AI will be blabbing on about opportunities.  Ok, ignore that.  Hit F12 and scroll down to Career Agent, and click on Show Career Agents.  Go to that station and do all their missions.

This will give you: No less than 6 Ships.  Not rookie ships but solid starter ships.  It will give you a taste of all the basics in Eve.  Exploring, Trading, Building, Fighting, and some other stuff.  It will give you some good starter equipment, and a very decent amount of Isk (in game currency) to get you started out.  Eve is not an easy game but it has never been easier to learn, and it is heaps more fun now.  If you ever thought about trying this game, I highly recommend doing the 14 day free trial and checking it out.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

  • ErillionErillion Member EpicPosts: 10,328
After the career agents be sure to do the "Sisters of EVE" beginners story arc. Gives you even more ships, modules, skillbooks and cash. You have to fly to their system - its in High Sec, so no problem.

Between that and the stuff you get from the career agents you have a solid start with a cruiser, destroyer, frigates for various tasks, some basic equipment and skills plus some cash.

    Have fun
