MMORPG.com's Age Demographic - How old are you? 2016

SirAgravaineSirAgravaine Member RarePosts: 520
edited January 2016 in The Pub at MMORPG.COM
Hello again! Demographics are an interesting topic...and age seems to be at the forefront of that particular discussion. Curious about the demographics of this forum roughly five years ago, I posted a poll asking this same question...

So..how old are you?

Five years later...I'm curious what audience is still around and who has joined the website and frequents the forums. I made a solid attempt to improve the quality of the poll options, after some criticism of the last one. Hopefully those that are professional or amateur staticians and/or data analytics won't burn me at the stake for the inability to develop a proper curve or line or whatnot.

Frankly I'm more surprised about the inactivity on this forums five years later than the ages!

Poll stinks, I have a number of friends in EVE in the 65+ category, and no way do I want to be lumped in with them.  :p

The results are still quite stable. 30-40 has always been the biggest population.

There are still so many wrong assumptions about who plays MMORPGs, and which games they play. My previous raid leader in WoW was a PHD in mathematics. Not quite the "kiddy" some people here imagine all WoW players are.
Just because you have a PhD in something that requires intellectual effort it doesn't mean that you cannot act childish inside a game. If anything, if you are going to act chlidish a perfect place is inside a game.

That said, this poll says more about how different the forum users responding to polls are to the average mmorpg player, which I expect to be significantly lower than 30.

My first raid leader in WoW was 15, but by the way he spoke/acted most, including me, thought he was twice his age.

On the same note we had a 15 year Police Veteran who spammed chat with Chuck Norris jokes, spoke as if he was in high school(calling everyone his N***A), talking about what new girl he got drunk at a party and slept with etc, etc.

Your Age/Job/Degree have nothing to do with how "Mature" you act in a game setting.

Well I am 34. I can tell you that playing childish games has helped me establish attention, skills, and knowledge in the workplace. I am more creative, I am a good debater, I know alot about pc's. I have forum users here to thank for some of that, childish games I play, and my drive to explore.

Game ≠ childish or even child like

Your first paragraph doesn't make any sense. I guess it hurts your "WoW is for kiddies" conception. If you lead a guild and behave like a kiddie, your guild won't go very far and won't last long. Even in WoW.
Suppose a person has a need to let his inner child be released at some time. Where is the best place for it to be released? At work? No. When interacting with your family: perhaps sometimes. Inside a game: probably the best place.

It is similar to the concept of "blowing off some steam".

I guess we both give a different signification to "kiddy" and to "release your inner child".
Releasing your inner child doesn't make you an immature nuisance. At least not for most people.
Releasing your inner child per definition requires you to act immature. However, what one person considers a nuisance another person can find adorable, depends on context and person.

There is a danger in thinking strictly in averages. Perhaps the average MMORPG player that has a PhD in something that requires intellectual effort acts rarely if ever immature in online games. Is having a such PhD a guarantee for not acting immaturely in an online game? No and I provided a reason for why it isn't.

Analogusly, perhaps the average police veteran acts rarely if ever immature in online games. I don't know.

Woot part of the highest demographic for now.  I am 38 and probably the reason behind  that is maybe my generation was the first real generation of video gamers, I am including the 40-50 year old people when I say generation.  We started with pong, then atari, nintendo, playstation, etc.... We have seen the entire evolution of the modern PC, not talking about the old entire room computers here talking about home personal computers.

Its hard to imagine how fast tech has increased in just my life time.  I grew up without cell phones, cable tv, internet, hell even personal computers.  It will be amazing to see how much new stuff keeps coming in the years to come.

I never thought the cell phone would be so powerful.  Gotta admire that back-engineered alien tech.  And yet the basic gasoline engine design is over a hundred years old.

I have reached an age where you would have to saw me in half and count my rings.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

The results are pretty telling. Only 3 people under 25. This is why the publishers don't listen to us anymore. We are NOT their target demographic anymore. Everything these days is to appease the younger crowd.

I agree, the typical shut off date is now around 100 (RIP Abe Vigoda).  50 Here.  And I know my trip odometer only has 30 left on it.  If I can keep from leaking oil.

I think this poll is a wonderful thing.  It gives us soon-to-be-gones a sense of permanence.  We get to look those new comers in the face and say, "I've been playing on this field since 1983 and I hope to be playing here until 2046, if you don't mind."

My Dad passed two years ago.  But I lost him before that to a stroke.  He was a pen and paper Civil Engineer who I could never draw into the computer age.  I felt if he had learned to play computer games his mind would still be active and he could interact, meet and discuss with the vast society that is the online community.  But he never did.

I intend to go into my 80's still playing MMOs, and screaming my battle cry "I am Konfess."  The original, one and only, model for all claimants.

    Pardon any spelling errors
Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven
Boy: Why can't I talk to Him?
Mom: We don't talk to Priests.
As if it could exist, without being payed for.
F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

Um the poll has people fitting into more than one category depending on their age....

40-44 and then 44- for example.

    Still responded in my category.

lol. I don't care if you know how old I am. I'll be 40 in May.

Pretty telling when you consider how some of us post here. Even if there's a margin of error of some lying. I'm gonna be 46 and the older I get the less I care about sharing, or about what others think about how I act.
I still game and will do so til I can no longer do it,  whether by physical or mental limitations. Hell, My Dad is still around at 71 and he plays consoles. He's what I aspire to be in that regard.
Ultimately, I don't believe it changes much. Age doesn't give us all increased wisdom or intellect. I wager we post, act, react the same was we always did. Our ego being what it is and all.
