Let me admit right up front that I haven't been playing MMORPG in a VERY long time.....it was just too hard with small fry running about. Now they are older (12,13,14) and just beginning to really enjoy PnP games; unfortunately, they don't like the same ones Mom does and I get some complaint that they are "just too slow".
I have talked to them about trying out some of the online games and all are enthusiastic but I haven't played in so long (fiddlesticks; back to being a newbie) that I am really not sure where to start with them---there sure are a heck of a lot more choices now!! Could I get a couple of suggestions--especially from other parents? The ONLY computer they will be allowed to game on is in the living room so I can monitor them; any nonsense out of them and they get banned. One has a strong preference for FPS-type games (Doom3 on the PC and Halo for Xbox are his favorites) and the other two play very cooperatively in RP-type games (Baldurs Gate for PS2 is one of their favorites).
Thanks very much in advance for any suggestions/help/pointers.

City of Heroes.
- Simple but relatively complete system.
- Fast, VERY fast.
- You dont ''kill'' anything, you ''arrest'' them for the greater good.
- Strong emphasis on grouping, but can solo just fine in an instanced focused game.
- After a few months, they will prolly be bored with the game, which is a good thing since you can more easily adjust without having to improve your diplomacy skills that much.
WoW would be a relatively good choice but...they will experience the ''need'' to raid or PvP, which IMO is a very poor choice from the devs and show a clear lack of tastes from them.
Others games out there must be good for family oriented games, but I dont know them well enought(MapleStory, the other game about tradeskills and fishing for the community, Kitty online), but odds is they will feel you throw them a kid game...while I bet you may enjoy CoH yourself(in fact you may buy the game for yourself officially and allow them to play it hehe).

Hey welcome to the boards
First of all...it may be a tad hard to find am morpg that will suit them at the ages you described. The only reason being is that many many mmorpgs these days are becoming increasingly complex and involving. However I do have a few suggestions.
For your son that likes FPS games I would suggest maybe Planet Side and then Vanguard (when it is released). They are both FPS style games with a mmorpg flare to it.
For your other son i might suggest WoW and Guildwars. The others may be to involving for him to get into.
I hope that helps somewhat

like to start them out try some of the free mmorpgs. the free ones usually dont have all hte fun exciting stuff that the large ones do but they really set a view of what more of hte mainstream ones will be like. also you wont have to waste money. the game Gunz just launchd an international version of their RPG FPS. the game is mostly like a shooting game but it had RP element it would be a pretty good starter.
once they are sorta use to some vauge RP elements you should have them do some trials for some of the more mainstream MMORPGs such as SWG,EQ2,RYL: PotE,Ashen Empires, ect....
i would suggest RYL PotE as it has also a vauge sense of a FPS because you can control it with mouse or keyboard mode. one mode you left click to attack and run with the common w,a,s,d also skill are interactive being that you hold the right mouse button and htey charge up and it gives a sense of control. but it does start to get hard in the upper mid levels.
Good advice. WoW is definitely fast paced level wise. But it's kind of shallow in the long run. Another good MMO that's fast paced is Star Wars Galaxies. It's a really great system that allows you to jump right into things and it's fairly fast paced both on the ground and it's also got space flight (same style interface as X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, etc). Hmm... EQ2 has improved the 'pace' of the game lately too. I've heard COH is good but it definitely wasn't my cup of tea.... DAOC is another good one and it caters to both low and high level players but it is a lot slower paced level-wise than WOW or SWG. Guildwars I don't really reccommend... it's very clique and isn't REALLY an MMO though it does have some elements of an MMO. Other than PVP there isn't much to do in GuildWars..... EVE is nice but if they don't like slow paced games they'll really hate it. My best advice is WOW or SWG and play it by ear from there.
As to the FPS kid? PlanetSide will definitely suit him. There are a LOT of teens playing that game. Hope you don't mind him hearing foul language though Because he'll want TeamSpeak and most of the outfits on there are primarily foul mouthed lil teenagers. Mine is fairly mature but it took me a while to find one that was at least moderately clean .
Something to think about if you decide on PlanetSide for the FPS is to get the SOE All Access Pass for $21.95 a month. That way your kids have a choice of SWG, PlanetSide, EQ, EQ2, Tanarus, Infantry and a slew of others for just 1 monthly fee (you'll have to buy the game but at least you don't pay 2 or 3 monthly fees for 3 different kids ) For me we use the SOE all Access because my daughter LOVES EQ2 and I play SWG and Planetside. Total $45 a month if we had separate subscriptions but with the SOE All Access pass it's only $21 a month.
Anyway, whatever you decide good luck My bet is that they bounce from game to game for a while before they find one they really like.
WOW, SWG, PlanetSide are probably your top 3 choices though. I really don't advocate GuildWars unless they want to PVP a LOT.
