Hype machine games you HAVE NOT bought or funded

Was thinking about this with the BDO imminent release and Blade and Souls back and forth, and of course the SC talk that never ends.

Those three are my big 3, never played BDO in any language and havent preordered it and will more than likely wait for it to go on sale before I do.

ZERO interest in Star Citizen, and even less now. Blade and Souls played it 15 years ago when it was Guild Wars 1.

The only games I have bought or played the past couple years are Archeage (my one mistake but I guess I got the 150 out of it maybe) ESO, bought that right before it went F2P for 19 bux and got some free time with it and some credits so good timing there, ARK (hasnt everyone), Life Is Feudal pocket game, Repop (couldnt get into it). Thats about it. Oh and a little indy game

So for me maybe the games I have played and bought into is shorter than the ones I have avoided.

I don't know that BDO and B&S are truly "hype machine games". Both are, or are close, to a release state and you can watch many examples of gameplay. When I think of hype machine, I think of, yes SC, eqnext, pantheon, C of E, O of M, stuff on which the basis for opinion is almost entirely on dev Q and A.

Lets see, I bought Broken Age, which a lot of people think was a big hype machine game. I bought GW2 which was a big hype machine before it became clear they couldn't deliver on their manifesto. But as it is, I generally don't buy games until a few years after release, so not much more.

Oh yeah, and Yooka Laylee, I'm hoping that turns out well.

I buy games that look interesting to me, regardless of 'hype' since that's mainly on forums or media outlets. I've yet to support an unfinished or crowd-funded game, and I don't see myself doing it any time soon.
I'm a firm believer of having the 'proof is in the pudding' so to speak. Not promises or allusions of potential and/or greatness.
Have I bought games I thought might be good and regret it afterwards? Of course. That's a part of making choices, or as the saying goes. "He that risks nothing, gains nothing" ~paraphrased.

Dunno about hyped games, but pretty much avoid kickstarter still stuff until it gets released and do not even try new mmos until 6 months after release if it even happens. It does not matter if it is F2P I usually do not even look at them until I am sure they will not fail quickly. Played many games that sizzled and failed soon after release and do not like repeating the cycle.

Last game I spent $ on was DC Universe Online January 11th, 2011. This is after spending $ on Aion, GW1, WOW, FFXI, SWG, Ultima Online, and many other MMO's and non MMO's.

The last 3-4 years I spent mainly on F2P games like Path of Exile, Marvel Heroes Online, DC Universe when it converted to F2P and Ultima Online (P server). Hopefully by 2020 somebody will release a finished product where I can enjoy it long term for years ahead.

My signature pretty much shows how much experience I've gained in avoiding products that don't push this genre forward over the decades...

I avoided Archeage, ESO, SWTOR.  I think Star Citizen will be a HUGE bust because I just can't see it living up to all the hype so I haven't put a dime into that game.

I bought SWTOR, GW2, Rift, FFXIV ARR, ESO and my last, Skyforge.

I avoided TERA, Wildstar and TSW.  Not interested in BnS and am waiting for BDO to get a few NA/EU miles behind it before deciding if it's worth it.

Other than splurging on Skyforge, ESO was the last game I went for and only because I really loved Skyrim.

Black Desert interests me because it is open world.  I'm tired of little zones or zones that are really just big dungeons with no where to go but where you are directed and nothing to explore, see or find.

Most of the upcoming MMOs, Shroud of the Avatar, Crowfall, et al, bore me just looking at them.  No amount of hype could interest me in them.

I played probably half of the hype era games starting with WAR because I had hope for Mythic.  Most of the others I understood that I was taking a risk with my money and that was ok.  I did play SWTOR, Archeage, TSW, FFXIV, and  more at launch.  I avoided GW2 for years, skipped Wildstar and a few others.  Overall I felt like I at least got my money's worth out of most of them, but the last time I was completely happy with an MMO purchase was WOTLK.

I finally reached the point where I just don't take chances on every new release because it's almost always disappointing after the first week.  The only thing coming that has a chance at my money before launch right now is Camelot Unchained and they are going to have to show me a lot more before I commit any money pre-launch, but I do believe in their vision.  Once they prove to me that they can realize that vision I will probably buy in.  I don't have the least speck of interest in any of the other hype games at the moment (crowfall etc).

SWTOR was the last. Can never get hyped again.

I have never funded WoW, Aion, Rift, Wildstar, any Final Fantasy MMO, or SWTOR
I purchased GW, GW2, Warhammer Online, DAoC, UO, Planetside, Earth and Beyond

Correction, as an employee I did not have to purchase Warhammer Online soo... not sure how you want to count that one.

I wasnt going back that far, just the past 3 or 4 years, so if we count the 'earlier' years I bought Rift, GW2, Lotro (not that hyped actually), Vanguard, Warhammer, AoC, Fallen Earth. Pretty sure during that 'golden era' of MMO releases people bought basically all of those games. But since all those games were decent to good (even VG despite the tech problems) I dont count them as 'throw away' games.

Sort of ironic looking back now and seeing all the 'this game failed' posts in the forums because by comparison to what we have seen the past couple years and what we can expect int he future those games were blockbusters.
