I am getting excited by this vaporware - should I buy a plane?

I used to play a great game called Star Wars Galaxies which, though rudimentary and full of bugs, was so vast that you could just log and do absolutely nothing, and yet still have a great time. I used to wander about in my space yacht and watch attack ships on fire in Kessel and then maybe shuttle down to Moenia and go out to milk Banthas before maybe having a little tea at the Emperor's Retreat. Then I might round off the trip by sword-fighting Night Witches on Dathomir for their crystals.

Do you think - if it's ever finished - Star Citizen will offer that kind of variety? I just saw the little BBC feature on the game and the company. It seems legit to me (though I'm not always the best judge). Maybe I'll sink $150 into a freelancer package. Is that a farsighted investment? Or the gamble of a deluded rube?

If I was buying in now I would do so at the lowest level possible, and if I really wanted to upgrade then I would only do so just prior to launch. There's absolutely no benefit at all to having a more expensive ship until the game releases.

The only thing that will be getting milked is you. Now you are the bantha.

Do you really want someone to tell you what to do here?  Then just give your $150 to charity.

What do you really expect from this thread?  I think a little bit of reading, about as much as you put into the BBC article, would be enough to make your own decision, and would spare the community another thread full of trolls trashing something they aren't even interested in.
What on earth is wrong with you?

But I am thinking prices will be more expensive before the game launches, no? I mean as excitement builds.

    No, it's nothing like SWG.

Star Citizen is about cinematic and fast paced combat in instances with very limited number of players, at the moment the limit is 16 players per instance but they're hoping to increase it. You'll have to get your dose of SWG elsewhere.

Wait for a free trial, they've been holding those occasionally, test it and if you like it after testing then buy it. But it's about as close to SWG as WoW is to SWG.

You can get both SC and SQ42 for only 60$. So why are you thinking of buying 150$ ship?

I also very much loved SWG and played until the lights went out.

IMHO Star Citizen is the next step in the tradition of SWG. If you want the OLD SWG feeling you might want to check out "The Repopulation" which is very similar to the old SWG (although recently delayed due to a necessary engine conversion). If you want a newer game with modern technology based on the old SWG and Wing Commander tradition, SC might be interesting for you. But SC is NOT like SWG in all respects (SWG had better crafting IMHO). If you enjoy more the spaceflying aspects, check out Elite:Dangerous.

If you want to help playtesting SC, you might want to start with a basic package (45-60 bucks). If you like it, you can always increase your contribution to the crowdfunding campaign later, if you want. If you like solo games too, take the basic package that includes both the solo game (Squadron 42) and the the multiplayer game (Star Citizen). You will find another thread in this subforum where many players offer you a friends code that benefits both of you when getting a package.

If you want to make sure SC is the way you want it, you may want to wait until launch and watch the reviews and "Lets Play"ers.  The multiplayer game launch should be some time in 2017, the solo game end of 2016.

Let me know if certain aspects of SC interest you and i can link you to descriptions of it.

@noncley This must have been one hell of an article you read.  I mean to go from thinking Chris Roberts was defrauding his own company by hiring his brother, to then wanting to give him $150 is quite a swing.

Everyone has a post history, yours was easy, first page.

I've only asked one question of the Roberts and CIG, Do the Roberts have any Swiss Banking Accounts. As of today nothing has been said.

I don't know, maybe it was your use of the terms vaporware and plane in the title that smelled a little fishy.

    Carry on

You and your pal are probably a bit too sensitive and aggressive for this thread. Can you leave so the rest of us can continue having this friendly discussion. Thanks.

    That's some serious interest!

If the game is worth buying, it will still be worth buying when it's actually released.  This whole buy before it is even finished craze is like lighting your cash on fire to see if it will turn into more money.

All this says to me is that you have $150 to waste.

I was just thinking that. If I could get a guaranteed 12.5% on anything, I'd be pleased.

But I wouldn't be buying into SC as an investment - just as a bit of fun. (That said, years and years ago, I sold my Jedi for £400 two weeks before the NGE made it worthless - I didn't know that was on the way and the guy I sold it too was pretty cool about the deal).

Well, I did like a very old game called 'Freelancer' years and years ago which was a Single Player game - a rudimentary flight sim with beautiful graphics. And, of course, I was really in to SWG Jumptm to Light Speed which was the one aspect of Galaxies that Dan Freeman actually added something to.

I am guessing and hoping that Star Citizen will be a persistent universe allowing players with an economic and exploration interest to enjoy the game without being jumped by all the twitchy little FPS squits. I kind of enjoyed Eve but the strategic as opposed to tactical dimension was not so interesting to me after a while.

(Also SWG handsake - Redyrd, Doc/Medic and then Jedi. General wanderer, owner of three House compound and museum in Tatooine, proud footsoldier of FoE. Oh my friends, where are you now? Curse you, Smedley!).

Wouldn't it be better to buy Elite Dangerous for $30 and have a fully functioning game that seems to fit the bill?

I have actually bought that on Steam but not played it for more than ten minutes. It just seemed like an FPS/flight sim than a persistent universe which is what I am interested in.
