That's because when you pre-order and actually try the game, you can't cancel. I wonder why.....

How many pre-orders did Wildstar get?

Even at 1mil preorders after 6 weeks, they are looking at 10 to 20% of players sticking around.

So the game will have to be monetized via cash shop post launch with the remaining 100 to 200k players (assuming 1mil preorders).

This is not something unique to BD, its more indicative of the playerbase and many other games to play.
    You don't say?

You mean like every other mmo?  Even subscription games where you have to buy the box have big cash shops now.

His post isn't meant for people that already know that.  It's meant for the apparently large amount of people who don't.

Re-iterating his post for those who don't understand, considering typical MMO retention rates, 400k pre-orders is not going to be enough to prevent BDO from having to resort to emphasizing the cash shop heavily in the future.  400k or 500k pre-orders might sound impressive, but for a Buy-to-Play MMO where that's supposed to be the only primary source of revenue, that's really not a good sign at all.

Guild Wars 2, another B2P MMO, had over 1 million pre-orders.
  • WaterlilyWaterlily Member UncommonPosts: 3,105
That seems incredibly low, considering only a fraction of players are still playing in MMO after the first few days.

I don't think they ever released those numbers.  It would be kind of irrelevant though (unless Wild Star somehow had higher pre-order numbers, in which case it would be lollerskates), as Wild Star charged for a subscription.  So it wouldn't be a direct comparison.

The best direct comparison would be Guild Wars 2, as it too was a B2P MMO without a subscription and what was meant to be only a minor cash shop.  It had over 1 million pre-orders.

I don't think 500K pre-orders and the 50K (10%) player retention is enough to keep the game going as B2P only for a long time...

    Bingo!
Sounds like they should have kept quiet about how low the pre-orders were, although why people still pre-order in this day and age, i just don't know.
Have to agree, though, given average retention rates, its not a good sign.

LOL only 400k?  Gold sellers buy more than that by themselves.

Probably not, and those retention rates vary depending on how good or bad the game is, so 10% could end up looking very optimistic, however, time will tell.
Personally i see both Blade and Soul and Black Desert going the way of Wildstar, probably a good time to stock up on popcorn :p

What kind of comment was this meant for a joke or something? Hell I am happy there's no gold farmers in the game it is a breath of fresh air without seeing my chatbox filled with buy gold here buy gold there. And in case you didn't know most games that have gold farmers are not exactly buying but stealing players information and using their accounts.

Not for real players who missed Sandbox style games such as myself. I haven't even once thought about leveling to max there's so much stuff to do. Only the neo WoW generation ( who think that games is the first MMO ) would think that the game is bad.

Depends, contrary to what you may think gold selling has gone mainstream. There are boiler rooms gold farming here in the states on many college campuses. I " had  " a friend whose entire frat at Florida State were gold farmers. They were not stealing accounts, they were buying them. They had a site that sold gold and bought accounts. Buy the game hate it never intend to play it again these guys would give you $10 for it.

The players in game are loving this game, watch any streamer as well, they are all amazed at the content, the beauty, the combat, the only people mad are ones that cant afford the game or ones that just hate every game equally and are never happy.

    GAME TIL YOU DIE!!!!

If the game is good, less players will leave, other players will stay longer, while others will join...  Thats what made WoW successfull...

Currently the NA/EU cash shop is to expensive, in my opinion people will happily spend 50 x 1€ but not one time €20, which makes the current cashshop questionable...

to succeed the game needs to attrackt more and more players after release, as does almost every game out there.  I dont mind spending money on a game, realising that a game requires player investments to stay alive... Creating good games costs lots of money, so playing for free is an illusion..

as long as there is no clear pay to win, i am okay with cashshop games. Yet still think sub games are still a much better system.    Back to pay to win, i remember arcade halls, and every time you got killed, you had to throw in new coins, was that fair?  If that felt fair, whats wrong with adding such a system to MMO's?

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Competitive Arcade Halls (fighting games, for example) were more "Pay because you lost" rather than "Pay to win", really.  You got a re-match as long as you kept paying but that was it, and considering the whole point of the game in the first place was to just keep matching against people, that's like, whatever.

Noncompetitive arcade games were noncompetitive, so it didn't matter that you chucked in tons of quarters (Paying) to win.

sorry but i still cant get over the fact how you cant actually trade with other players, in this wannabe sandbox game.

i always thought how sandbox games were supposed to give you more freedom, compared to themepark ones anyways, and not remove features just to make their creators life easier :confounded:

Enough with the Korean slams please. Some of us are proud of our games and contributions to the genre.
What? I didn't slam Korean in anyway, I think they are the smart ones here. Clearly can't say same about western mmorpg players.
