Thinking of buying in, eta beta?

GatlanGatlan Member UncommonPosts: 141
Lately I've been playing a game that I won't mention here because I think its against the rules. But its got me enjoying the old Mythic RVR experience again, which made me remember that this was a thing. I'm thinking about purchasing but I don't want to buy into something that's still months away. Any idea when beta begins?

It's ok to discuss http://www.returnofreckoning.com/ here, because the official game is closed.

Discussion of the first closed beta is speculative, it was supposed to have begun, but was delayed. Sometime later this year, surely, summer maybe.

It depends on which beta you are referring to and what you are looking to get out of the beta. You want 24/7 access to the servers? You want to do weekend tests? You want access to CUBE?

I tried to play RoR but my computer changes all the files to read only even after I run as admin and change them. The moment I click out of them it changes them back.

I suppose 24/7 ongoing, though I be psyched just to play on the weekends. I don't mind rough edges, my mmo of choice lately has been RoR, which mostly works.

Last information we got is that Beta is still expected to begin at the end of winter (so in a month or less). The User Stories page gives an idea on what has been done and what's left to do.

As a guy who played DAoC, and Warhammer for a combine 8 years, trust me this will be worth the wait.

I don't buy BETA tests,i buy finished games.

If the developer does not trust the gamer to stick around and support it,why should we trust the developer they are going to deliver?

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Who said they don't trust the gamer to stick around?

Don't buy in yet.  There's hardly anything to play test.  I'm going to come back in beta.

Beta 1 is supposed to start in almost exactly a month, but there is a lot of work that needs to be completed for that to happen. Whenever it starts, don't expect to be able to test 24/7. At this early point in development, CSE only puts up the server for Alpha and Beta testers when they need those backers to test something specific. CUBE (the offline building program) is available 24/7 to all Alpha and Beta 1 backers however.

I don't buy beta access either, that would be stupid. I do however, on occasion, support a developer if I believe in their cause and wish to see their visions be realized.

Probably because having a game development company costs money and developing a game costs money too. Although, I'm not entirely sure since I'm not a developer myself so I'm only guessing really.

    --------

In terms of Beta; I believe they're aiming for end of 'Winter' but I'd be skeptical. I'm personally expecting some delays, sometime during spring should be a given though.

They just announced today that there isn't a delay in Beta 1 so expect it soon!

No announcement on delay isn't equivalent to announcing that there's no delay. =P

That seems overly pessimistic, there hasn't been any indication that would suggest a delay of that magnitude. Beta will be this year for sure.

Will it be in 'Winter' though? I'm doubtful of that. We'll hear more tomorrow on the livestream.

I heard beta 1 is targeted to start in about 6 weeks. Cost is $ 60 donation(which allows for as much access as they plan on having. IT WILL NOT BE 24/7.....AND A VERY EARLY INCOMPLETE FORM OF THE GAME.

The official estimate is for Beta 1 to begin on or before the end of winter (March 20). We'll know more about whether they will be able to make that date successfully after they finish the 3 week hard crunch (12 hour days) they started this week.

CU programmer James Brown mentioned 6 weeks till Beta (instead of expected 3) yesterday on reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/CamelotUnchained/comments/47ey5e/any_beta_updates_on_the_stream/d0cvqce

I have told them to just use a date instead of "end of winter" to avoid confusion like that. :p Aside from JB's comment, everything I've seen points to March 20 as the date they'd like to have Beta 1 start by. Until Mark himself says the date is actually March 31 which technically is during spring, I assume nothing has changed.

maybe because his last game was cut down VERY early by their last publisher and they recuded the content fron 6 to 2 cities, and totaly fucked the game over (namely, EA).
maybe you will pay for games some day, so they become they way YOU prefer em, and not some bloody publisher, and maybe you can stop complaining about how you don't like those games that day then.

    gl with that :)

How many independent mmo developers that don't take money from corporate can you count on your hand?

If we did not trust them there would be no game to buy or even try. This was a kickstarter and those of us who saw it worth the risk took it.

You will get to buy your finished game. You're welcome.

It may just be semantics, but I wouldn't call that a beta. IMO, a beta should be a persistent, fully featured test.

Yea, it's just semantics. Quoting a renowned veteran of the video game industry who has overseen the development of more than 200 games: "...it's rare for production terms such as Alpha and Beta to have the same definition from company to company or even studio to studio." "... those definitions are codified in conjunction with the team that executes against them ..."
