Derek Smart Was Right

Well, say what you want about Derek Smart but the bottom line is, he was right.  When he said “The game, as pitched, simply couldn’t be built. Not with the tech they had, nor with the money they had.” He was 100% correct.

When Derek said “Star Marine is Quietly Cancelled” back in Oct 2015 I figured he was full of something but then BAM!  Cancelled

I’m not a fan of DS and if you look back at my posting history you will see I attacked him harshly back in the summer of 2015 when he started spouting his opinions.  Is he using this fight to promote his own games, YES.  Is he right about everything, NOPE.  But he was right about these two issues. 

While I dislike the source, I have to admit he has been correct on several fronts.

Co op no longer exists (the sim pod does not count).   Star Marine was ballyhooed for most of a year, as a 'next month' release, akin to Arena Commander.  Both have been 'redefined' out of existence.

The Smart thing is a so-so reference though.   Derek Smart and Chris Roberts strike me as very similar personalities.  I think that's a reason they grate on one another so.  Smart's just more abrasive in public.

2/3 of what Mr Smart have said is akin to "the sky is blue and rain makes you wet" so he is bound to be right every now and then.

SC, in my opinion, is turning out to be the biggest fraud in gaming history.

I think after whatever is finally released the gaming industry will be changed forever, good or bad I can't say.

I think the single-player, "first part" of SQ42 is going to be mocap, on-rails, point a to point b, but I think once one completes it, the game opens to a mini-persistent world co-op, alot like the current "alpha". This is why I think the current "alpha" is actually "SQ42 alpha", minus the cutscenes, mocap and npc social zones. This has actually been my prediction for months, here and other places, and I'm sticking to it.

Star Marine doesn't exist anymore. One can call it "cancelled" (and I tend to lean this way) or one can call it "on the backburner", or "indefinitely delayed". The people most involved with it, Illfonic, were dismissed in a strange, secretive way, and there are no first-person arena games as the "ender's game" thing promised, yet. CIG is redesigning character models, so they probably realized the original vision for fps wasn't entirely possible, yet they refuse to make such a concession publicly.

It's important, i feel, to note, I don't disagree with Talonsin's op, and indeed it's possible to hold that position and "be legitimate", but the "real truth" is somewhere in the middle (albeit closer to his perspective on a continuum). The most important part, "The game “as pitched” will not be made. ", is absolutely 100% true, and how ridiculously far it continues to deviate remains to be seen.

Huh?.. you really think cry engine doesn't have the tech to build a fps only mode? These hate comments get weaker and weaker the more i read.... surely it took more tech to get it running on the PU then it would to release your box standard fps gameplay/maps Star Marine looked to be lol.

I am a critic of this game but I fail to understand why the vast majority of critics have to wallow in the mud just to be a critic. you dont have too

in fact 9 times out of 9 if its a thread with a critical statement its likely all just a bunch of made up B.S.

First off, I'm only saying that "some" of what Derek Smart said has come true.  In Oct 2015 he said Star Marine would be rolled into the PU and not released as a module and guess what?  In January of 2016 that is exactly what Chris Roberts said.  I dont know the reason behind it but i do know DS said it 3 months before the official word came out. 

How you read that and translated it into "Talonsin does not believe cry engine can make a FPS" is beyond me and is exactly like what has been happening on both sides of the argument.  Fantastic assumptions are being made as a smoke screen and very few people are discussing the real issues. 

Most of the so-called "haters" have never said the game was a scam and was not coming out but in come the games defense force claiming they did and using the mini-PU as a reason everything a hater says is a lie.  Ignoring the facts and making asinine assumptions seem to be the order of the day on both sides.

Haha, you make a topic saying he is/was right and under that quote you say "Sure seems like he hit the nail on the head". I don't think its a 'fantastic assumption'... your pretty much saying you agree with him and his opinions you have quoted.

LOL he called it for SM. Now he says more people will be moving on from CIG! It does show he know's some ex and current developers over there. He says something and it turns out true. 

Can't wait till this is all over so we can end up hearing the inside story, that will happen down the road.

Just a question: what part of that tweet mentions cryengine? tech can be anything from an engine to a part of their game implementation with that engine.  tech can even be hardware.

curious, why you think he meant cryengine in that tweet.

DS knows more than just a few developers at CIG.  He is the man everyone reaches out to when doo-doo is hitting the fan at CIG because everyone else is afraid to take point, and that includes many CIG employees and personnel with insider knowledge. Something has been stinking up the joint over at CIG for a long time now, and its just a matter of time before all that shit is splattered all over people's faces making it very hard to doubt where all that stank is coming from.  I've mainly stayed out of most of these SC/CIG threads since my initial splurge into this fiasco when I came down hard in my criticism of CIG about their lack of transparency, accountability and shady management tactics, but it is just a matter of time now and I will be here front and center reminding all of you enablers and blind deceivers when it finally does all come tumbling down.  It's no longer a matter of if, it's a matter of when.

Uh... the links are pretty clear. Co-op is canceled for single player and people were told there would be drop in and out co-op. Star Marine has been designed, re-designed, and waffled on for awhile now. Who knows if it's coming or not.

SM is canceled SM isn't canceled. What I heard him say was SM is in SC. Which is a big difference, clearly SM that is pushed is no more. Yet by saying it is in SC that is CR hoping it gives him more time. Also he hopes it will keep the money rolling in.
