Hard to know what ESO sub numbers are. Probably not too high since going B2P yet their cash shop seems active and used often.....or it is the crowns being used from subs or both I don't know lol

Hard to say really. Probably FF 14 then EVE
I'd say ESO isn't doing all that bad. This very site voted it as game of the year last year for one thing, and they seem to have picked up speed with updates now after having a bit of a slow start. On top of that, it's available on consoles as well.

WoW is the undisputed number one, from there on... hard to say which are numbers 2-10.
Some of the MMOs that are definitely in it are probably:

    FFXIV
    ESO
    SW:TOR
    TERA

Beyond those four, it gets difficult to tell, since many of them are older MMOs that are hybrid F2P/sub games.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

Most western style mmos have under 200k subs. Mmos tend to retain subscribers for a long time. This is why the highest population mmos are Wow, fantasy journey westward, and lineage despite being over a decade old. Blade and soul also has a high subscription count. If we looked at gross revenue, then its Blizzard, Nexon, wargaming.net, and the FJWs publisher.

Shhh or you will destroy the notion around here that older MMORPG with 200k subs are more niche than new MMORPG with 200k subs.

The companies don't even keep track of player numbers as subs have gone the way of the dodo, what's tracked are daily, weekly and monthly revenue from cash shops. That's the key metric nowdays.

How sad is that? They don't even care how many players they have just how much money they can squeeze out of the people who do play.

Top 10? Doesn't exist for "traditional" games imo.

And WoW number 1 - are we sure? WoW's revenue fell by (another) 16% last quarter (source AB formal results) so if subs fell by the same % then they are around 4.6M. Factor in that only a percentage are EU and NA based and - maybe - 2.3M ish.

Now when you look at non-traditional subcription offerings e.g. EA's FIFA / Madden / BF etc. offering on console; or various multi-quarter DLC offerings for several games e.g. SW BF and several could be bigger than WoW. Now not everyone may see games that offer X quarterly DLC packs for $Y as subs but the companies that offer them do in their formal reports. And at the end of the day if someone is paying $75 or whatever in advance for future content - sounds like a sub to me.

And then there are the XBox and PS4 memberships - operating more like the old SoE all access passes. I think they probbaly occupy the top two slots.

We counted a couple of months ago and there was less than 10...I think 5 or 6 was the final number.....Doesnt Lineage 1 use the same dynamic that WoW does for Asian subs (ie internet cafe)?....Lineage 1 doesnt even have 100k subs for US/EU but has huge numbers in Asia.

How is that even sad? They have never cared about player numbers beyond their role in the company's bottom line. Players have always been cows, and the only thing that has changed is that some developers have found a new way to milk them.

The only mmo that gave subscriber numbers was WoW.  No other does, they just give misleading numbers.

Very hard to tell who 2nd with out real number other then blizzard we all know they still have tons sub left.

But here a list people can look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_massively_multiplayer_online_role-playing_games  Other then Allods Online not on that list when there is a sub server for it and FF14 not on the first part in that list.

They were talking about MMOs specifically on this thread though. :)
If you consider -every- single game out there, then LoL would likely take that number one spot, or another game that offers more "instant gratification" compared to the huge (boring) time sink that MMOs represent.

WoW might not even be a blip on the radar then. I know games like World of Tanks and similar ones that I personally have very little interest in, are bringing in ridiculous amounts of money that the standard MMO can only dream of.

According to Ten Ton Hammer about 5 months ago

    1. WOW
    2. Lineage 1 (very big in Asia)
    3. Runescape (they do have a sub option)
    4. EVE
    5. FFXIV
    6. ESO
    7. SW TOR
    8.Ultima Online
    9. FFXI
    10. Everquest 2

This ranking was based on active subs only, not actual number of players

No one knows. They don't release their numbers. Even WoW stopped releasing the numbers last year after they lost approximately 50% of their subscribers in one year. You can google that if you want.
