Carbear? Who cares?

Let me get right down to brass tacks. Who really give a rat's red ring about whether a person prefers PvE or PvP? Seriously!! For some reason, the bashing of "carebears" has come in vogue and it makes no damn sense to me. This is on the same level as arguing over race or sexuality issues. It's also on the same level as bashing someone over their race or sexuality. You aren't going to change them, they aren't going to change you, so why waste everyone's time?

My personal opinion is that if I want PvP I'll play a game of SKILL like Soul Calibur, Gunz or Rome: Total War. If I want to hang out and socialize or take a stab at reliving the dungeon crawling glory days (or afternoons) from high school then I meet some friends and play PvE. As long as I'm with my friends, I can also PvE in character which is what they mean when they call it a ROLE PLAYING game.

I enjoy both and see both as having their place. I'm also not saying that RPGs should be totally PvE and action games should be totally Pvp. Some of the best times I had in Ghost Recon was in co-op mode. Likewise, some of the most challenging PvP I've had was on arena servers for NWN.

I'm through reading the anti-carebear posts. I would ask that people stop posting them, but we've asked people time and time again to stop aking for free games and read the sticky. Asking doesn't work, ignoring does. From the few "PvP HARDCORE XTREME RULEZ" posts I've read, it sounds like these kids just feel totally inadequate in their daily lives and want a game that gives them free license to grief other players so that they can feel better about themselves. PvP oriented games that are well balanced and require more skill than "Phat l00t" just don't seem to appeal to them. Ask any PKer.... I mean.... PvPer what they think about Guild Wars and you'll see what I mean.

I fully agree. Trying to balance PvP in a game is nearly impossible, becuase no matter how hard the devs try, SOMEONE is always going to whine about one class being stronger than another, reguardless of what is done. If you want PvP, go play an FPS like CoD or a fighting game like the OP mentioned. As for MMOs, CONSENTUAL PvP is the place to be, as you can make everyone happy that way ::::28::

I absolutely agree. I don't care about pvp one way or the other. As long as the game is fun and gives me plenty to do, pvp usually isn't a factor. The fact that pvp is usually screwed up in some way in every game makes it even less of a factor.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. The problems are that 1- Everyone seems to think their opinion is right. If you don't agree with them you are a "noob" or whatever else they opt to call you. 2- There's bad eggs in BOTH groups that drag their perspective camps into the ground. Generally because these said "bad eggs" believe firmly in issue number 1.

Prime example of the opinion issue is how long people will spend bashing someone because the bashee enjoys a certain game the basher doesn't. "That game sucks and anyone who plays it sucks" is a common mentallity. I believe in what was said above. If you enjoy the game then it's good. At least for you. That's what counts since you are the one paying for your game. Now I have no issues that if someone else wants to pay my monthly fee and an hourly wage I'll play exactly how they tell me too. That's called a job.

As for PvP I can live with ot without it. I am playing WoW predominantly again right now and I am on a PvP server because it adds another option. The other day I got "yelled" at in-game for nearly 40 mins because I didn't stop to attack a player that was 20 levels lower than me while he was fighting someone high own level. The person yelling at me was a 24 Human warrior who was fighting a 24 Tauren Druid. Now, in my mind, I had no business stepping in on that fight unless I am asked. Plus, I was on the way to help a guildie out with their issue. This warrior, however, thought it was my job to pay a monthly fee to follow him around and defend him at all costs. When it comes to PvP I generally only fight someone around my own level unless they are attacking my factions NPCs. I don't go out of my way to find some Horde player who is questing just so I can kill them and slow their levelling up. Call m e crazy but I'd like more people around my levels so I can either have good quality fights or good quality allies.

This is not to say I haven't gone on a gank-fest. There was one lvl 25 who specifically announced that he would be in Redridge all day ganking Alliance noobs as they came in. How could I resist that? I didn't :P But I am not obsessed with PvP. I know plenty of players that are. And given the fact that WoW is a pretty EASY game to blame and max level you HAVE to have something to do.

Either way it's said you're always going to have PvPers calling Carebears "noobs" and Carebears calling PvPers "griefers". But both camps aren't going anywhere anytime soon. There's obviously a market for both camps or these games wouldn't keep coming out and lasting for years on end.

I say everyone should just respect each other's opinions and realise that while you may not agree with them their $15 a month is keeping the game alive just as much as yours.

"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

    Bah, pansies.

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

I to would like both camps to respect each other.

But in all honesty, in a case where one side bases their whole agenda on the exact opposite of respect I do not ever see this to happen.

If it were indeed the end all and be all of MMO gaming then why are not all game full PvP?

The only obvious conclusion must be that most people do not want it.

"You do want it, having me ganking you will heighten YOUR gaming experience, you just dont know it" is an often used comment. Wich again just implies these are juveniles, cause any reasonable adult with a minute knowledge of history knows that when a violent minority tries to force their view on the non violent majority puts us right back to 30th's Germany.

    To thoose it may concern!

I wont ever player your game, we will never have anything to do with each other either in RL or online, for obvious reasons, why do you feel the need for bashing me for this fact?

Case and point. If you aren't a harcore PvPer, you're immediately labeled as a panzy, or much worse. This is mainly because you're not like them...sitting on the computer for 12-18 hours a day, 28, and living in your parents' basement. Some of us have real lives, so we don't have 312496591234593 hours to build up a PvP character. Even if we did, some of us play MMOs to SOCIALIZE, not be griefed by the above mentioned person.

I could care less to be honest however  it is a two way street in that any game that attempts to even mention PvP we have a large whine come from the "I only want to spend endless hours killing computer AI" people throwing a tantrum.  You see that now that EQ2 is putting in limited PVP.

People on both sided have their opinions on the subject and will not be swayed either way so in essence it is a mute debate.

People who do not like PvP use the l33t and other tags to flame against people who like PvP and the PvPers use the carebare label.

I am just happy that all of the most successful MMO games have PvP in them, and this means that more new games than not will offer PvP in some form as this is what I enjoy and find the most challanging to do.
