I read that you have to purchase a house designated to house workers.  You also apparently need one to have storage.  My question is do you need to buy multiple houses for each of these functions?  If you just want one as your residence, to decorate etc do you need an additional house?

Yes, that is correct. You will need many houses in the game. You still need a personal one for decorating, as you will also do your alchemy and cooking there. You need one for storage, so your workers have a place to put the things they harvest or craft. You need at least one for the workers. And the crafting places are separate as well. Your workers do all your crafting, minus the cooking and alchemy i mentioned earlier. So whether you want to build boats, make weapons, or whatever, there are certain houses available for each. 

Houses also come in different levels (theres one for building tier one boats, and another for the tier 2 ones). And some houses have pre-requisites, and you have to buy them in order to get to the higher level ones. There are many guides available out there for all your housing and worker needs. Enjoy.
