I was really hyped for this game, and now I can finally play it. So far, I'm impressed, but not as blown away as I thought I'd be. A few thoughts ...
1. Without a doubt, the smoothest MMO launch I have ever played.
2. The combat is nice. Not spectacular or revolutionary, but nice. I'd say Blade & Soul's combat is more fun though.
3. The game is freaking gorgeous and that makes it so easy to get immersed in the world.
4. So. Much. Grind!
5. My only serious complaint is the UI, it's a total nightmare in every aspect, from the art to the user experience.
6. Being able to solo 10+ mobs feels wrong. The mobs require no thought or skill to combat, its just mindless grind fodder. For a class like Sorc that specializes in single target DPS, its off-putting.
7. Within 5mins of getting my first mount, a donkey, he drowned at the beach as I was fishing. I was incredibly sad. 10/10
8. The game requires you to do extensive research before playing, because it crams an insane amount of info down your throat. This info is not organized or fun to indulge in.
9. No one talks. Or maybe its just my server, but no one uses the world chat.
10. I'd say it was money well spent.

I'm on Uno and I see mindless chat all the time. And they are just losing energy. In truth it's a smart design as it does keep some of the nonsense out of chat. Well, "some".

of course this could be part of the learning curve.

My gripe is the overload but I've only played about 20 minutes this morning before leaving for work. I ran into some trouble never having enough knowledge to do anything with NPCs. I think that regenerates over time?
about point no 10 world chat - World Chat requires 1 Energy Point and u need energy point for everything from crafting to mining to harvesting to cook to hire workers etc.
Energy is hard to come by
1 for every 3 minutes online or 1 for every 10 minutes offline
Whisper, local and Guild chat does not take energy point
- I hear there's a lot of complex/poorly explained systems in this game. Do I have to bother with them or can I go straight to mob grinding? I'm not interested in crafting, fishing, mount taming etc. only pewpew.
- What's the main avenue to get better gear in this game? Solo mob farming? World Boss farming? Crafting?
I don't want to do any research before actually being in the game. Don't wanna spoil anything.
Thanks for answering.
on #10 - So true... Money very well spend. Though I'm glad I got my €100 pack refunded and picked the €30 instead.
I'm on Uno and I never hear a thing.
When you first get the gear it'll be Tier 0. Each time you add a black stone to it it goes up a tier and at the highest tiers there is a chance it won't work. Weapons can be enhanced to T7 and armor to T5 with 100% guranteed success. After that, if the enhancement fails, the gear will loose some max durability which you'll need to fix at a blacksmith by using another Tier 0 version of the same gear. So crafted or store-bought gear has an advantage in that it's easier to get when you need to do that. Weapons go all the way up to T15... not sure yet about armor.
Additionally you can also upgrade the rarity of the gear (white > green > blue...etc.) although I don't know exactly how that is accomplished yet.
Jewelry is upgraded a bit differently. Instead of stones you use another identical T0 item to upgrade it and there is always a chance both pieces will break. They can be enhanced up to T5.

/wonders if that was related to another thread.

Not this game. Wow...
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." - Perfect world
- APB Reloaded
- Aion
- B&S
Damn these fanboys are strong. Not mention that everyone in-game looks exactly the same so in the end it doesn't matter.

Yep chat on jordine sure is busy hehe
I'm waiting to see how things develop once there's a substantial amount of players at L45+. I'm well aware that there are supposed to be measures to limit ganking, but past experience has also taught me that these measures seldom have any meaningful effect.
I'm blown away by how much fun I'm having.
The initial start was rough and didn't seem as exciting as I was expecting, but after getting past a LOT of steep learning curves over many systems of play, I'm having far more of a blast than I've had in many years of playing these games.
There are so many things to do and all of them are fun. This game feels like several games rolled up into one. The crafting system itself is more complex than I've encountered in the past. The worker system is awesome once you figure out how to make that all work. Buying a building to house your workers, then investing points into the nodes that lead out to a farm or mine and then having your workers begin harvesting that node, all of that was difficult at first to learn, but given time and videos on the subjects, I'm having fun with the system now.
This game is clearly not meant to be easy to just jump into. A lot of the best features need to be learned and that can take a lot of time. I still have to learn a lot more. Trade routes are still something I haven't quite learned yet. I still have yet to learn all of the crafting. The affinity system, which allows you to increase an NPC's willingness to give quests and other advantages to you, is an entire system in itself. The knowledge system is crazy detailed. Reading a book from your bookcase in your house gains you a random knowledge without any effort of exploration on your part, only time invested. Housing is crazy with buffs gained from items placed.
I've got a 860m and have the graphics cranked up quite high, so I also get to see how awesome the world looks.
I'm playing on a 5 year old PC with a GTS 250 so lets not talk about graphics.
On Edan I've played a berserker, ranger, tamer and sorcerer to level 12.
The zerker and sorcerer have just been grinding and main questing, the tamer and ranger have been playing with nodes, processing and crafting.
The game feels like a more solo-friendly version of Lineage2 with a much more complicated set of non-pve tasks.
I've fixed the one UI issue that was driving me nuts, I instinctively keep hitting ESC to toggle the cursor (too much Darkfall I guess) and keep popping up the monolithic Menu interface. I have now bound the cursor toggle to the middle mouse button and everything works much better.
There is a large (300 member) Aussie guild on Edan, I have the long term goal of putting together a small crack team of aussies to regularly pvp against them via guild warring, however I will assist them when it comes to sieges. I've decided to strengthen them via tough love, it will be a blast.
Its the type of game that you can play by having a set agenda for the day and two hours later realise you have been totally distracted and done nothing you planned to. I like that. Oh look, some weasels, lets farm some for beef jerky.
The rankings systems (while more for the no-lifers) add some great goals.
I'm still on track to play this for 3-5 years.
Oh and on the chat, I've learnt a lot about Clinton and Dumpf, for an aussie hearing about the presidential campaign from average Jo's has been refreshing. The block works well in chat for the wow kiddies also.
Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76)
Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe
The good part about BDO is that due to it's complex game play the chances that it will attract a mature and pleasant community will be dramatically increased resulting in a game environment that is not as toxic, rude and/or obnoxious as many of the lesser complex games in the market today. Evidence of that can be seen in this and other forums alone. Even though I don't care much for PvP in MMORPGs, this actually bodes well for the quality of PvP in the game as well as it stands to reason that the make-up of the PvP players that sticks with this game will be more mature and less likely to get their kicks from mindless ganking, trolling, and obnoxious trash talk. BDO's depth and complexity bodes well for its long range viability. It may very well become a niche game, but I am willing to bet that the quality of its community will be second to none.
