Would BDO be a game for me?

TheScavengerTheScavenger Member EpicPosts: 3,321
Since there are so many people asking for guest passes, I haven't had any luck with that. So I may just dive in and buy the game and see for myself. Its what only 30 dollars or something? Not that much.

However, think it would be for me?

My favorite MMOs have been: Vanguard Saga of Heroes (probably top #1), Asheron's Call, Ultima Online, Everquest 2, World of Warcraft (top #2), Guild Wars 1 and TERA (top #3)

Least favorite MMOs have been: Guild Wars 2, ArcheAge, EVE Online, DarkFall

My favorite games: Civilization 4, RUST, Terraria, Total War series, Skyrim (my #1 favorite game of all time), Fallout 3 and NV

When I play a MMO I don't do raiding (at all), and most of the PvP comes from battlegrounds if they have them or arenas. WoW is only MMO I played on thus far on PvP servers cause it was just so much fun, it wasn't stressful or annoying at all. Just needed to repair items, so lose gold to repair, but it was just pure pvp fun. What I mostly like to do however is explore, do quests, achievements if the game has them and craft...crafting is my #1 favorite activity in MMOs. But I also like having a house, and killing stuff I can do by myself or in a small group to accomplish things or get better items. When I reached "endgame" in WoW, I still had tons of things to collect, achieve and tons of content I could do by myself or with a small group. So there was tons of things to do.

TERA kinda ran out of things to do once I reached level cap (at least when I played, haven't played in a while), but leveling up was just pure fun.

Vanguard was probably my top #1 MMO. Amazing crafting system, crafted items were almost as good as raid items. Tons of quests, tons of dungeons you could solo or do with a small group, classes were a lot of fun and the housing system was awesome. It did lack achievements, but the game was still really good. Also vanguard had a HUGE world so there was so much to do and explore, and cities were massively bigger than WoW's ones.

EQ2 I liked for same reason, an awesome crafting system, amazing house system and a ton of things to do. Could find shinies in the world and try to finish collections, and even at endgame I had a ton of stuff to do. Didn't like the world nearly as much though

So, with all that said. Think BDO might be for me?

There are no instances in BDO, however there are world bosses that would take a few dozen people to defeat. They give good loots but are completely optional.

PvP is rare in BDO despite what most people have been speculating here. However it is mostly open-world and can, theoretically, happen anywhere. Nevertheless the penalty for being killed in non-consensual PvP is very low. In consensual PvP however you may risk losing your socketed gems which can be expensive if you use the very good ones.

The crafting in BDO is quite good in my opinion, granted I've not played any MMO with good crafting.

The world is huge, with some secret locations, so it would be fun for explorations.

The gameplay mostly revolves around solo adventure with some elements of small group play.

Tough call based on the games you like, as your likes and dislikes contradict each other.  You seem to like questing..  I loved Darkfall and GW2 due to the freedom they offered.  Games I dislike are all linear quest hub no freedom themeparks.  I may be a bit easier to figure out than you are.  I also like BDO due to the freedom it seems to offer.  There are some quests but they are not really the focus of the game.  You will love this game world.  It isn't Darkfall big seamless yet, but it has a bunch of NPC's unlike Darkfall.  I'm thinking you will like the housing as well.

I think you should give it a shot.  Your game likes and dislikes make no sense to me though, so I may be way off.

Edit:  I'm not far enough in the game to care about PvP at this point.  When I get there, I will either guild siege PvP occasionally or when someone attacks me.  The other systems in the game and the character building or just too good to be scared of by the occasional surprise attack.  I have hope for the siege system, but I don't think they have fully finished that system yet.

Based on this http://forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/446659/is-this-basically-a-pvp-game , I get that pvp is very much the carrying part of the game (see 3rd post by @ArChWind ;), at least no one is arguing against that claim. Personally that was the defining factor for why I am not playing BD (I like a lot of the other stuff).. for @TheScavenger this does not sound like a problem.

On the Korean server there are only a few very hardcore guilds that wage war often, and only in specific channels, and sometimes specific locations. Territorial disputes do not happen very often and not everybody bother to participate in the first place. Most of the time people just go about their daily business. Open world PK is even more unheard of since people do not see the point in it.

To say BDO is a PvP game is as ridiculous as saying it is a fishing game, or a horse riding game. People play the game in different ways, for different purposes.

I like similar games like Total War and fallout/skyrim and find black desert pretty good.

Theres a lot of activities you can do at any level... especially since there are no weapon or armour levels. Questing is good for rewarding max energy and contribution points to let you micromanage resources and build things easier.

Dude, there are free passes all over the place or drop a whopping $30 to own it, so trying it out isn't exactly a huge commitment.

If Skyrim is your favorite game why don't you just play ESO? It's one of the best MMOs on the market right now.

Side note, BDO is comparable to ArchAge, so if you disliked that game it stands to reason you may not enjoy BDO. Although, there are plenty of differences, so I guess it depends what turned you off about AA.

Well, ArcheAge the community was so bad. I found it way worse than TERA (so much worse it didn't even compare), which most people didn't like community of, but TERA wasn't so bad to me. And ArcheAge was filled to the brim with gold spam (as bad as FFXIV), and unlike WoW, I couldn't right click the name and block them AND auto report them. At least when I played it didn't have that feature. Vanguard had gold spam initially, but it wasn't nearly as bad and was easy to ignore. WoW has a bad community on a lot of servers (mostly PvP ones), but I found servers that actually had a very decent community on par with classic MMOs of old (mostly PvE or/and RP servers).

I also didn't like the art style of ArcheAge at all. It reminded me of FFXIV or maybe Aion art style, which isn't my thing at all. BDO looks much better to me and I actually like art style of it and graphics, so that isn't an issue. Its still similar a bit, but I like it more for some reason. Maybe its cause the graphics are a lot better or something.

Also, I found that PvP was vastly too annoying in ArcheAge. The pvp death penalty was far too harsh (which is also why I didn't like EVE and Darkfall, but liked PvP in WoW).

Then the biggest thing was the stupid retarded labor points, I wanted to focus on crafting, but that feature was retarded and I couldn't do shit. Forgot if you could buy labor points, thought there was labor point potions which would be totally pay to win, but I don't know for sure, cause I don't remember. So don't hold that one against me :P I just know the labor points was retarded and you barely got any labor points lol. I'd have been fine with it if I could craft 3+ hours without running out and do stuff, but I always ran out before that lol.

    as for other games...

ESO is nice, but whenever I play ESO, it makes me want to play Skyrim and I then log off ESO and play Skyrim instead :P And then I never play ESO for a few months, log on, then go right back to Skyrim :P

As for guest passes. I tried reddit sticky thread, MMORPG.com sticky thread, and I requested a guest pass and no one gave me one. Way too many people asking for them lol. So I gave up on that. And when people posted keys to guest pass, they were always used super quick. So not gonna bother lol

Nah Black Desert Online is crap, I say after pre-ordering unable to play because they use XingCode3, Don't play it one of the worst games ever made wait for Dark Fall, if they release it like before one of the best PVP games out there.

No, BDO is clearly a PvP game, and at higher levels its virtually all about the PvP.  In that sense its a bit like Eve Online, you go into the game expecting to be at some point, engaging in PvP, willingly or not, which is why the 1st rule of Eve, is 'don't fly what you can't afford to lose'.
I would suspect that BDO is much the same, as player looting is afaik a thing, then don't wear/carry stuff you cannot afford to lose, obvious precautions for PvP'ers no doubt, but i suspect some going into BDO without experience of PvP enabled games, may not realise this is the case.
As a long time Eve player, i can see the attraction of some of these features of the game, and that it does support a more predatory type of gameplay. B)

Why, because XingCode3 stops you from cheating? What a pity, really...
Took a few minutes to google xingcode, turns out, its a problematic piece of code, doesn't like bitdefender, and seems to have a problem even with task manager sometimes.
I guess we'll be finding out in the next few weeks just how much of a problem Xingcode is, and whether it really is as bad as some of the current reports seem to indicate.

If you like micro management of workers, trade routes , nodes , crafting, farming, management of resources etc then you will find this game very enjoyable and satisfying

    PVE is kind of MEH.

45+ you have to PVP otherwise you cannot progress

I have a guest pass - send me a message and I will send you

  • Azaron_NightbladeAzaron_Nightblade Member EpicPosts: 4,829
I think you'll like it then. It's a bit of a cross between Vanguard and TERA. The combat is more TERA, but the world, the conversation system with NPCs and the crafting are more Vanguard.

Anyway, it sounds like your guest pass problem is already solved. So good luck! ^^

keep in mind it is a lot to learn game and you will have to spend time reading and watching videos as the tutorial is poor, that may be a good or bad thing depending on what you like to do

  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332
EVERY single npc interaction is an instance,so no idea why people are saying no instances.

It is a lot like Tera with same old pvp ideas.VERY heavy pvp game just not yet,but soon will be,by time ojne month is in most will be in a full out pvp game.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

@theScavenger Seems real simple if  you enjoy open world PvP then this is a good game for you.  If you want a PvP end game then this is a good game for you.

sassoonss also has listed some facts, if that's your style then this is a good game for you.

Otherwise... perhaps this is not your cup of tea.  Good luck on whatever you decide, I hope you find something soon.  :-)
