From what I understand (and I may be way off), the main point of BDO is to grind PvE until high or max level, at which point you PvP. Is that the gist of it? Is there any compelling PvE content to continue with once you're up there?
The PVE is a dumpster fire. I vaguely remember reading that they're working on dungeons. Before someone starts whining, I don't think the game needs a lot of PVE content if the OWPVP can carry it.
I am really into breeding horses, trying to make a T4 horse at the moment. I am also leveling up a ton of alts and trying to do some crafting also. I am not in a hurry for pvp time, there is a ton to do in this game. It is kind of like Star Wars Galaxies, I would always be sidetracked by other things.
It has crafting etc...but its not what I expected, the lamest part of this game is the worker/node/housing aspect...it really sucks...way overthought and poorly delivered.
This is another Asian mmo I play for 1-2 months and uninstall forever...I can tell already that the initial fluff will be gone soon and then it will get boring fast.

I said that awhile ago, and I got yelled at like I was killing someone.

That's what it seems like for the first several weeks - but you'll see soon enough that there's nowhere the depth of SWG - like not even close.
Again once you have crafting all automated - you will see it first hand.
I am just happy to have a game that isn't the usual treadmill grind to endgame, then raid raid raid. I would love to have SWG back again in it's full glory. But today, this game satisfy's my sandbox (for now at least).
This is the most involved MMO I've played in years. It truly is remarkable. I don't like that the PvE is pretty lame, but there is so many other things to do it doesn't matter. It really feels like a living breathing virtual world. There really is no way to simplify the game into PvE or PvP talk.
The key here is that there is some freedom and a tough but feeling of accomplishment learning curve. This is not run to quest hub and to the next quest hub. Walk up to the crafting bench and craft things without thought for other systems in the game. Honestly for $30 freaking dollars, in the shape this genre is in...you really can't go wrong.
Like I said, I don't mind dying in PvP, but I just generally suck at it. Does that matter in BDO? Or is it all a zergfest where skill doesn't matter anyway?
Welcome to the modern mmo. They offer less and less while they tell us otherwise, and blind people decide to agree with them and tell us that we should just be happy with it.

Each death results in loss of XP - which at higher levels could be 20min + of grinding time, so it's generally a bad thing in BD to die - and since the XP gain post 50 goes up exponentially dying at late level 50s is BAD.
Example 2% XP loss at level 59 = 20 hours of AoE grinding to get it back

yeah....
Ugh, that sounds awful.
You can't EQlike delevel, though. So it's only so bad. From what I gather they have a good deal of work to do on the large scale PvP stuff and with no reward for open world PvP I don't think it is that big of a deal. Man, if you are not playing this game due to $30 and fear of level 45+ you are missing out.

LMAO... what? Boy, that really makes a person want to dive headfirst into some PVP. Don't get me wrong -- I like risk in PVP, but effectively losing 20 hours of playtime is a real kick in the dick. I've lost countless ships in EVE Online, but I've never suffered a single defeat that cost me almost an entire day of playtime. Does this penalty apply to death in GvG sieges?

I'm fearful that once I hit 45+, I won't have anything to do. =/

The point is that you will get your $30 worth by the time you're a lvl whatever. Leveling a really secondary in the game. I've been fishing, hiring workers, feeding them, buying houses, crafting with the workers, gathering, exploring. I don't think I killed a mob today. When I did kill mobs, I worked on my combos and what build I should put skill points into. Frequently slowly going through the BDO bible. And I've not touched taming. Overall, I'm just having fun slowly building a character in a world that feels alive. It really feels (and looks) different than any other MMO I've played.
Can the Asians not make any MMOs except shallow grinders? Final Fantasy excluded.
Asians are in the market to make games that make money with minimal effort. FFXI, even though it had its flaws, was a really well thought out game. Sadly the same can't be said for FFXIV. One could blame the team, which is partly true but its also the company as well with condensing the size of the team. More companies (asian companies) are doing the same thing. Less members you have on a team means the less perspectives you have leading to a mindless project most times. BDO is really just a genderlocked version of AA with no healing class but better graphics and not as annoying of a point system (labor/energy) compared to AA.
I've recently just started playing both AA and BD and having a hard time getting into BD. I'm really annoyed that i can't pvp until a certain level and there's penalties for it. If i could pvp along the way it would be more fun for me personally. I'm just not sure why it was touted as a pvp game and everyone's so scared of it, when from what i see there's hardly any pvp.
Kano it sounds like you have knowledge of both games...for someone who likes to level and pvp along the way and make some friends and enemies what game of the two would you suggest?
I will add I'm not a huge fan of pve treadmill grinds for staying pvp relevant and that's one of the reasons BD interests me.
