You can't say "we are canceling plans for China" but then say "we are committed to the game". Those are just opposing statements. You're committed to the current game, and when it comes to further development it all hinges on how Steam and the now small Dev team manage to make any money. But I guess you can't say "we don't have faith in his game, so we are going to milk it for a while."
Anyway, sad day for Carbine and for EQN.
Carbine is now in the same boat as DBG and Turbine. Hopefully they have better leadership than the latter two. It would be a shame to see this game shuttered.
The writing has been on the wall for a long time. I think we will start to see quite a few companies fall apart very soon. I agree with it being a shame
I only hope is NCSOFT decides to sell the game/studio instead of simply closing it. In other hands, they may fix the 2 biggest issues: questing and alt friendliness.
The game should be put down quite a while ago, at this point it would appear that NCsoft is staying their hands off the life support for simply the fear of losing face.
Sometimes it hurts more to hold on than to let go.

Of course you can say "we are canceling plans for China" and then say "we are committed to the game". They are still committed to the game in NA and the EU, they just know that China won't be worth the effort and resources to bother with releasing it there. Also, saying one thing and doing another is totally expected these days. Politicians do it all the time.
Anyway. Sorry to see 'Wildstar' going but it wasn't unexpected. Play it now before the great game killer NCsoft chalks-up another one.
I've got a feevah, and the only prescription... is more cowbell.
They should do like FF did and close it down, do a complete do-over, then relaunch. But that would take being committed to the game which they don't appear to be anymore.

The game was in beta in China for quite a while already. Would be interesting to know how the chinese players took on the game. Anyone around who took part? Perhaps nobody took part at all, hence they throw the towel now?
I'm not an expert on the chinese mmorpg market, but when i heard that Wildstar is supposed to get released there my first thought was that this game would require a ton of changes to attract somebody on the asian market. And since Carbine couldn't even get the western version together...i'm not surprised at all.
Right, but what game really ever did? The problem of Wildstar wasn't that it didn't live up to the hype, but Carbine wasn't able to direct the game into a direction in which they could even establish a niche playerbase. Imagine that studios like Aventurine or Starvault managed to do that with Darkfall and Mortal Online.
If somebody had told me that these titles would outlast Wildstar i would have thrown farm equipment at him.
This probably means the end is nigh for WildStar. I wouldn't be surprised if it was shut down by the end of the year. The transition to f2p didn't go very well and NCSoft has a history of being quick to hit the cancel button on an MMO.
I do hope that whoever was in charge of the pre-launch marketing campaign has a good job somewhere because it was probably the best I've seen for any game, let alone an MMO.

Every single game they've shuttered has at least had a niche community that wanted it to stay open. It has never happened, not one time.
Yep, they'd rather alienate the fanbase and drive future players away than let a property go.

Agree, I would never have imagined that a game like Wildstar would have been outlived by Dungeons and Dragons online or Champions Online, etc...
"Furthermore, sources tell us it was made clear to remaining employees
that they should expect additional layoffs in the coming months.
"Those remaining only have a couple months left before Wildstar 'coasts into the sunset,'" one source told us. All of the sources we spoke with asked to remain anonymous."
This is why I would never consider working in the games industry even though my dream has always been to work on video games. It's an extremely brutal industry for line employees.
I don't see Wilstar being around long enough to make it to Steam at this point. NCSoft seems to be gearing up to close the game.
The thing is, it is bad games that are suffering. If you are passionate about games, then fight for it. Wildstar had an abysmal combat system that was just unfun and was never going to be fun. I can gaurantee most of the developers behind it agree, but they just let it slide, for whatever reason.
There's still a very small chance that WildStar enters maintenance mode and keeps cruising along with absolute minimal support.
There are a dozen games out there still running like this, no reason why WildStar couldn't be one of them unless the player base is really that critically low.
I hope those devs land on their feet and find something even better. I've been through job loss before and had many a night laying in bed wondering if I would be able to pay my bills. Best wishes to them and their families.

I predict the shutdown to be before the end of this year.
