Seems to me that mmorpgs are never fun for me past me character creation stage.
After that its not so much as it is anticipation of the next level/item/skill.
Why can't they make a mmorpg with FUN combat. Something that takes skill maybe?
I know most of the marketing ploys. They have to balance the time it takes to lvl so its long enough for them to keep paying for a month and short enough to keep them from getting bored.
But I dont understand why they can't make it fun! You'd think the first game to make a game where the combat was what had you more intrested than you progression. So it didn't have you staring at your xp bar every three seconds.

i was starting to wonder if i was just jaded...
in EQ2 i've made over 50 characters, been playing since launch and never had a character over 36. i just dont have the drive, leveling seems like such a pointless endevor, as the game just gets slower, but its all the same, the game levels up with you, might as well turn off XP at about level 25.
i've also give just about every large MMORPG out there a shot, and some of the smaller ones, i just dont really enjoy any of them anymore, so i stick with EQ2 because i like the guild and the people.
tempted to give CS a try after a 3 year vacation... the state of games seems that bad
*GASP*
Blasphemy!

MMOs Retired From: Earth and Beyond, Project Entropia, There, A Tale in the Desert, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Eve Online, City of Heroes/Villains.
MMOs Currently (worth) Playing: None.
MMO hopefuls: Age of Conan.
Dunno... I've been playing MMO's since they were MUDS... A LOT of the ones out there are craptastic but I have a lot of fun in SWG...
And don't flame SWG guys, what game you like boils down to personal preference. I'm not getting into a 'this game is better' war. I enjoy SWG, you may enjoy WOW.
The answer to the question is:
Until you find the MMO that suits you, yes they are boring. But once you find the one that fits your style you will have a blast. It also helps to get in a guild with people who you enjoy playing with.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

The world of MMORPG's is absoluetly at a standstill right now. The last one I played was EQ2 and that was so frigging linear and boring I haven't played a mmorpg since. There's nothing out there that even remotely tempts my interest but there is hope on the horizon. Tabula Rasa
I think the age of the MMORPG is starting to wane and the age of the MMOFPS is taking over.
You're not the only one bored with scripted content, grinding, and having your level/character determine your success in a game.
To me, a real game is like Planetside, or WW2 Online, or Eve Online. PVE is just shite, you have to admit, its so shallow and boring killing an AI.
I think the MMO of the future will be all PVP, but there will be ways to discourage griefing, and ways to minimize loss so ppl aren't scared to fight each other yet still feel like there's something at stake, to make the fights meaningful.
I think Eve comes very close to being the perfect game, except the fact you have to grind money to participate in pvp.
To me planetside is the perfect MMO, all pvp, no grinding, all skill-based play, no rolling dice to see who wins, no griefing, no spending hours getting stuff just to get killed to go get stuff again.
As more and more MMOFPS hit the market, PS of course will lose marketshare, but it will always be remembered for being the first successful MMOFPS.
Let me spread my heretical ideas once again. I think the main problem here is that these games focus almost entirely on character development. Gain levels, upgrade equipment....and that's pretty much it.
I loved what Xanoth said about leveling seeming to be a pointless endeavor and the game levels up with you. Exactly. It is entirely pointless. It's just an artificial goal created to keep you busy.
You grind and grind to increase the power of your character but what's the point? As your character increases in power so too do the mobs you have to fight to continue increasing your characters power. And it never leads to anything except more grinding.
As people go through this cycle in one game after the other I think more and more of us will inevitably become jaded. More and more people will start to feel like they just don't see any point in going through it all again.
Of course, people will say it's all about the journey and others will talk about making combat more fun. And there is some value in those sentiments. But in the end, if the sole focus of a game is in character development but people are losing their drive to develop their characters because it seems pointless...well, then there is a problem.
It might seem antithetical to the MMORPG genre but I think these games need to move away from the focus on character development. In fact, I think that de-emphasizing character development is absolutely critical if anyone is going to ever really make a virtual world. They call these games 'worlds' but they are really just a series of areas in which to grind.
I could get into a painfully lengthy discussion of what would make a game a virtual world rather than just a series of linked-together grinding areas but I won't ask you to read all that. Just let me leave you with this thought: how about making a game where the focus isn't so much on how powerfull you can build your character up to be but rather it's about what you do with the character you have.
I don't know but i believe that the next big mmorpgs which will actually be FUN will be the upcoming webzen games, I mean you have APB which is like an online GTA, and then you have Huxley which could be the Planetside killer, and then there's SUN which will have real time combat from what i have heard and they will have an excellent quest system, and then there's Wiki which might apeal to those who liked The legend of Zelda: wind waker.
Try Horizons, it is the antidote to all the big games out there right now. It has all the charm and character that EQ2 WoW and Guild Wars (fill in the name of the game your currently bored sick of here) are lacking.
I felt the same way after getting bored of WoW then I tried Horizons, its completely a breath of fresh air. And it's FUN!
www.Istaria.com free 7 day trial its very worth a try
**repeatedly beats head against wall to banish image of Horizons being called more fun than WoW**
Thank you very much, you have officially shaved three years of my life away by the sheer horror of that statement.
When it was first released. Played it for three weeks, enough time for me to determine it was utter garbage. I have heard that it came under new management though. Hopefully they fixed that issue about wandering the country for over an hour without seeing a single, solitary mob. Oh well, it's a shame. The game was crap then, and I really don't feel like giving it my money again.

Ok understood But really, they have fixed it up its great now! If you liked anything about it, try it you WON'T be sad that you did. Theres tons of mobs btw but totally understand why you might be biased toward it but really check it out now, it IS FUN! And yes it's a breath of fresh Air after playing WoW to level 55.
The 7 day trial is free, you have nothing to lose except your old impressions of the game
The music IS amazing, isn't it. So is the rest of the game now, they have fixed it up since you played it last, you won't even recognize it! It's been almost 2 years since it started and they have worked so hard to fix all the issues and it's a real gem now. Honestly try it, if for nothing else so that you will know what the game is like now. Your view of the game does not reflect how the present state of the game. I know you love DAoC so you probably have somewhat open mind, Try the 7 day free trial if for nothing else then to see how far the game has come.
You have nothing to lose but your 6 month old impressions of the game, it's really a great game and some amazing creativity went into it.

To the original poster, and anyone else looking for a FUN mmorpg, here is one.
I know i have said this over and over, but it really is what you guys are looking for. The combat will be *gasp* FUN!! and actaully be 50% YOUR actual skill ,and 50% items/character skill/etc. There will be open PvP and full looting.

I think MMO are slowly getting better(slowly) Their are some good promising games being Developed. Roma-Victor seems good if your tired of fantasy games. You use your own skills kinda like a FPS. You can build buildings, Fight in Battles with many PC and NPC, become emperor of Rome, and have a legendary class. The death system can be harsh like if you been bad and murder people you will have trials in a heaven/hell place like fight demons. If you been good and just got killed it will be easier for you. You lose everything you have in your inventory and equiped if you die in the hands of another PC. If you die as a Legendary it Perma-death but the Legendary class allows you to be Emperor and other high Positions and grants you bonus in skills. Their no Magic or speciel Weapons so it can be equal in battle if they are not better equiped. Skills go down if you don't use them like if you practice alot in swords and then you go to pracitce in farming you skills in swords will lower unless you train with it. Darkfall Onlines looks good too. SO all we need to do is wait till MMO games set better standards so other will eventually get better It just gonna take time(which most of us don't want to waste)
It seems alot of people do look for a game that sort of steers away from character development and jumps into PvP faster.
I think Dark age of Camelot does a great job of this ( it still does, always will ) the only unfortunate factor is the two expansions that obliterated the game, Trials of Atlantis, and New Frontiers.
The new servers will help alot to reduce the grind time required before you can compete equally in RvR ( PvP ) since it eliminated the use of buffbots and Trials of Atlantis ( yay! )
The game is relativly easy to level up in now, you can level soley in PvP if you want, I expect with the new servers the battlegrounds from 1-50 will be packed completely so you could really just grind it through PvP all day. While the normal servers you really wont see enough action to level in the bgs until 20+
New Frontiers is where it really boils down to if you will like the game or not in the long run. Without ToA it may be alot better but there is really no-way to tell. Currently on live servers battles are a ranged warfare fight with no point to being a melee character at all. With ToA enabled they have several abilities that really draw out fort standoffs to an exponential amount of time ( some can take over 8 hours ).
without those abilities nobody really can say how long fights will last, sure you will beable to take the fort faster but also you will die faster. I think in the long run it will take the time required to take a fort or otherwise down by alot.
Nobody can say but the servers come out on the 14th.
I like he comunitty of WoW they are pretty nice some of the lil 5 years old's ar bitches those just ignore them or if they keep bothering u pouce down on em
