Legend of Mir 2, this was amazing in it's day and I have not found an online community that can beat it yet, and city of heroes great game but maybe could have done better if the maps were bigger.
Yup. Auto Assault (fuck you NCSoft), Dungeon Runners (fuck you NCSoft), Tabula Rasa (fuck you NCSoft), and Earth & Beyond (fuck you EA). Wasn't playing CoX at the time, but was pretty ticked off when they closed it for no reason.
Have I mentioned lately how much I hate NCSoft?
I forgot all about Dungeon Runners. I loved this game... it was the ultimate casual but fun little aside, I used to play it all the time when I had a spare five minutes. I was seriously pissed off when they shut it down.
SWG til final server shut down. But nothing really dies on the internet. There's always fan films to look at if you miss a game that's gone. Forums are archived and there's the Wayback Machine.

Yep, AA was a tough one indeed (but I guess I wrote it already in an AA thread before). Until that time I never "lost" a game, online or not. In the '90s - early 2000s there wasn't any problems. MUDs, you could run your own servers. There was a closed web-based game in the '90s, they released the code after shutdown for offline use. Shooters, you could run your own servers or play on LAN.
So when those f.ktard NCsoft idiots closed AA, that was the first time for me to experience that a game is gone for good, that I won't be able to play it anymore, regardless of all the money spent so far. Hard lesson to learn... I was a collector before too, but since that time I'm a loud opposer of the "game is service, not product" bullsh.t (go gog.com, and fck you gabe ) Like Prophet, I loathe NCsoft because of that, luckily their (ongoing) games are craps so I can avoid them - most of the times. Wildstar is kinda fun. And GW2's SAB was fun too (but that's not in game anymore, and the rest of GW2 is crap, so yep, mostly just Wildstar)
I missed TR's closure, I was in the "nice one, I'll check back when the bugs are squashed" state, and the next thing I saw NCsoft killed it as well.
Since then none of my main games were closed, "only" (in brackets) a plenty of my 2nd level games, which I've played on and off occasionally. In most cases, after the announcement I went back to say my farewells and to play them till the end. So in that sense, I've played actively when the plug was pulled: CoH, Vanguard, Dragon's Prophet (# supermetal ), FGO ( ), FoM (just at one of its multiple shutdowns), and RaiderZ. There was also a few I rather skipped to revisit and just removed the client at the announcement, like Wizardy or Scarlet Blade. (I used to keep all the games installed and updated, for convenience, and in case I have the urge to check back. Game hopping ftw)
City of Heroes. It was my "home" MMO for many years. The one I always returned to after trying others for a while, or played alongside them.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
City of Heroes, Earth & Beyond, Wildstar (not yet but we know it's coming soon). I'm probably going to quit MMOs after W* for a few years. I'm sick of games I enjoy getting shut down.
We need a new tactical superhero game like Freedom Force.

First. I'm going to nominate you for a very commonly quoted post award. Second I'm going to agree with you on just about every single point you made except I had just started playing CoX before the announcement..
Play what you Like. I like SWOTR, Have a referral to get you going! --> http://www.swtor.com/r/nBndbs <-- Several Unlocks and a few days game time to make the F2P considerably easier
It wasnt a MMORPG, but the last day of The Sims Online, City Of Heroes, Ryzom, GunZ Online, Age of Kung fu, Some of Ijji games, Sword of the New World I think list goes on and on... Yep I played some sort of shite games, but still I miss GunZ.
I was playing the free trial for Star Wars Galaxies and was going to sub when the closure was announced.
I was also playing Vanguard on and off (so not actively) when that shutdown was announced. that was the last game I spent Sony Station Cash in. I guess my remaining SC will be left to rot, sadly.
I was still active in SWG when it got the axe but there was a lot of warning on that. It wasn't like an over nighter.
I honestly never was paying for and play the games at the time they closed but I have returned to them within a year of is closure. I made peace with loosing them long before they fell apart.
Yes, far too many times. I've even been online until they've shut down. One game, they actually kept it going for hours after they said it was to be shut down, as they then started, err, doing things. Let's just say that was an interesting few hours.

To be fair, CoX was a "nostalgia reactivation" account, go back one last time just to say goodbye.
Hellgate... No one misses Hellgate:London. Well deserved burial.
Others have come and gone while i was not an active player. Like MCO and TR.
