    Biggest disappointment...

The Community of Gamers has devolved into a bunch of whiny, intolerant, spoiled and short-sighted brats whose vile stench and corrosive attitudes permeate the gaming culture in a manner that serves to only undermine the very avocation they purport to love.
    I'll second that.

The rise of the cash shop which has completely ruined a genre for me.

I'd rather be enjoying the games I play or have played.  By the time MMORPGs  arrived I was in my mid forties and I had long abandoned following hype trains.

edit: Ok, maybe one. I played Asheron's Call for about 3 - 4 years starting in 2000. After playing AC, 1 the world map for AC 2 felt like a very linear Call of Duty map. I played maybe 3 months because of that.

    Archeage

Been watching the game for years, starting to hype when they just had a few concept art pictures and only the base of their ideas opened to the public. Looked like they would implement stuff what players - like me - could ever dream of.

When alpha was open I played and really loved it, cause it contained a lot of new options.

Then, after release, cut content + crazy p2w cashcow milking + hardest game-breaking hacks/ dupes/ exploits + toxic community happened to such an unacceptable extent resulting in scaring away a ridiculously high number of players within the first few months. That broke several guilds - small and huge ones alike - including mine with hundreds of members.

Never thought a game hyped up so high over years could fail so hard in no time. Trion is still unable to rip off ... *cough* ... to regain the trust of the lost playerbase again - no matter how pink the glasses are its employees and fanboys try to put people on.

But hopefully he will make it right with SotA, looks promising with nice mechanics, and will have a single mode. Fingers crossed... (TR looked cool as well, and still died almost instantly. True, that was more NCsoft's fault and only in smaller part Garriot's)
and indie, amateur looking, game that let you make chairs? There are better ways to waste my time.

TR was a disaster. RG let NCsoft to put his name on it .. there is no excuse.

    As far as MMORPGs goes:

    1)  D&D Online(I guess you could lump in Neverwinter for the same reasons) -- a chance for a genuine open-world, fully-explorable MMO based on Forgotten Realms, but instead just got lobby and instances(and DDO was set in some new undesired campaign).  I'd still love to see a true D&D MMO one day, but I guess it's never going to happen.

    2) Age of Conan.  That game had to be the most unfinished product ever.  And, to anyone who hasn't read the Conan stories, you really should go hit up Project Gutenberg and check them out(spoiler: they are great).

    For non-MMO:

Project Offset.  I had massive excitement for what it could have become.  But, Intel bought their engine rights, shut down their game and refused to sell back the rights to them later when they asked(even though, as I understand, Intel never did anything with it).

Surprised no one has mentioned Darkfall UH.  That one disappointed me as well.
Are you onto something or just on something?

Mine was probably SWTOR...so much spectation...and then all that lifeless world... It´s true that it has got better with time...but planets are still feeling lifeless.

And ofc...Archeage...no words to describe that.

Star Wars Galaxies(NGE), and Trials of Atlantis for Dark Age of Camelot.  Both were turning points at a time when both of those games were fantastic to play.  Those decisions destroyed such good titles!

    All things Star Wars!

SWG- grindfest/AFK graveyard evolving into the NGE. JTL made the game tolerable
SW:ToR- Nothing like awkward cringe inducing dialogue to ruin a Star Wars game.

How do you screw up Star Wars so badly and Not be George Lucas?

Any game using Gameguard or any third party software.  If you are going to make a game create your own anti-cheating detection, but don't make it something that acts like malware and installs itself as a rootkit.  Can't even play any games that use gameguard because it actually runs as a rootkit and detects some legal things as malicious and I am not going to go thru and shut down another program to just to play a game.

Couldn't even play blade and soul on my gaming rig because it kept wanting me to close 3 other programs that had nothing to do with playing blade and soul.  Run into this with most f2p crap that comes out of Korea.

So what game(s) or gaming decision has been a big disappointment to you?

    Mine would be 2 games.

LOTRO - The idea of a Lord of the Rings MMO was a no brainer. A sure megahit. I was excited for the release. Then when the game came out I was completely let down. I know many here love the game. I am not bashing it to anger fans. For me personally it did not feel as Epic as the books. I just could not get into the world or classes or really anything about the game. It did not capture the sense of awe that I felt reading the books.

Age of Conan - I have read the Conan books since I was a child. Even searching used book stores in Seoul to try and find copies. (no internet to order at the time) Once the game was announced I was very excited and could not wait to get my hands on it. Then when it did release, It did not feel like I was in the Conan universe. The classes were fine the graphics were decent but the feel of the game just did not match up with what I expected from the Conan world.

So what game or games have disappointed you? Or perhaps it was a radical change like Star Wars did.

Funny thing is both of my 'biggest mmo' regrets are these 2 games.

AoC - Had this been held back for just 2-3 months more and been fined tuned with the bugs found in beta then this could of been the real deal, but due to undue pressure it was released, that release was worst ive EVER seen in an MMO (i wasn't playing ff14) and from that the game never receovered.

    LOTRO
If only this game could have kept enough numbers, maybe kept the sub based model it could have been so much more, it just needed some love, bringing upto date graphically etc.. It would have been an awesome game to this day, just based on tolkeins world meant so much more could have been done

    Lastly.

Your question was on games and not just the MMO genre so, the other on is the Football manager franchise, since 2013 they have lost their roots this game is no more fun its become to deep for itself, in fact its now only useful for real football clubs to help with scouting.

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

GW2 takes the price for me.. I loved GW and thought GW2 would be a new version of the previous.. Oh man was I wrong.

Warhammer Online.  I watched Paul Barnett and Jeff Hickman videos for two years and was filled with hype.  The game was a steaming pile of crap because the snakes at EA forced an early release of an unfinished game.  I will never forgive EA and Paul and Jeff's screwjob over Mythic and Mark Jacobs.  I look forward to some vindication when Camelot Unchained releases.

When Square Enix revived all Eidos Interactive's titles I was filled with joy. They kept their word and made sequels to all of them and only canceled Legacy of Kain series. It was like a commercial plane crashed and only one person died - me!

So what game(s) or gaming decision has been a big disappointment to you?

Sims 3 - I thought it would combined SimCity and Sims together and or improve the graphics but no. If you had all the Sims 2 games there was no reason to ever buy anymore sims games

ArcheAge - I just got suckered into spending more money on a game package then I ever have on any game in my life and it also happened to not be all that interesting of a game. Now to be clear I am loaded so the money itself was not the issue it was just that I would have preferred to make my largest single game purchase to be for a good game rather than a bad game

GTA5 -  What the hell was I thinking buying this game?

STALKER - Hate those invisible wall only one way to go pretend to be open game with a friggin passion

Lotro and a scifi mmo that I can't recall the name.  They recently said they are working on a new version.  Was a sandbox game, but was released way to early.

The NGE. I dare say I would still be playing SWG if it wasn't for the NGE.

I see many ppl were disappointed with Warhammer. That's interesting. To me it's still one of the best PvP MMOs out there.
Warhammer was good.  Maybe even great.  But the hype for it was absurd.  People were really expecting it to "kill WoW".  There's no way it could've lived up to expectations.

Plus, at the time, when it lost 50% of subs in 3 months it was considered a dismal failure.  Nowadays, that would be considered a great success for an MMO.

Nobody expects any MMO to be the second coming of WoW anymore, so MMOs are not judged as harshly as Warhammer was.  Which is too bad, because like I said, it was a really good MMO.

This guy was really good at hyping things- but in the end I think it really hurt the game:

My biggest disappointment has been the way the PvP focused games have been handled. DarkFall, Warhammer, what Age of Conan was supposed to be, DarkFall again, Mortal Online, and all the others released since then. None of them lived up close to the hype. DarkFall took way too long to launch and if it had kept quieter longer it likely would have done better. Warhammer RvR was legit fun but once EA got a hold of the game things started changing during the testing phases. I remember when each realm had its own main city for others to raid and then all of a sudden we were down to just one for each side.

But it seems like PvP focused games have been marketed wrongly for too long. Camelot Unchained and Crowfall have given me hope but I worry Crowfall will go the way of focusing on PVE too much. No worries with Camelot. My worry with Camelot is it is going to target a very small market and I don't want my good RvR games getting canned.

My first big disappointment came in DAOC when ToA came out. A lot of my crafting efforts were wasted, and gameplay devolved into raid-style encounters that felt more like work than play. "Be on time, do everything we say, and we'll get through this" is not fun in my opinion.
