All I know is MMO's have been dying for me based on my spending habit toward them over the last 5 years. In fact every new game, not just MMO that came out over the last 5 years, 2 months and 5 days (basically anything developed in the last 6+ years) failed to open my wallet and take a cent from me. It's not my job to find products that can entertain me, it's producers job to make their products entertaining enough to entice me of spending $.

I only spend $ on games that demonstrate to me they are on a whole new level compared to what I can experience for free. I only spend $ on games that I believe are the future for what is to come. Blizzard didn't succeed in WOW for doing the right formula, they succeeded in delivering a quality product that offered significantly better PvE with PvP combined than anything else at the time and that remained for many years afterwards.

but I thought MMOs where exploding in popularity because of the steller and amazing sales figures of The Division and Destiny.
Well yes, it appears this is how some determine the "genre" is thriving, along with strong MOBAs profits, card games like Hearthstone, and whatever the latest multiplayer shooter gets released.

Being more of a purist in my definitions, I'd say the genre has been over run by "the Settlers"

yeh .. isn't evolution of a genre great? Be more inclusive and suddenly a dying genre became a growing one.

mmos have been changing even on browsers and phones, mmos that would have never existed a decade ago are everywhere and the playerbase has grown
