I agree and I'm an All Access member, however I don't think this is going to go well for them. If they want to continue making money then they should sell access packs like LotRO or ESO.
It's a bad move, in a string of bad moves by Longdale, that I think will end up hurting the community. It's not going to generate a massive subscription adoption. The fans (us) are mostly already subscribed. This is a revenue loss in many ways. Those who just buy xpacs and stuff on the Station Store are going to be split and this will further divide the community like the TLE servers, although it won't split resources like TLE does.
I get the impression they need to improve revenue numbers. First TLE servers, then non Heirloom merc boxes, the upcoming addition of LoN rewards to the cash shop, and the gating of content behind their sub.
If they were new like TOR then maybe they could get away with it, but they're not. Even in TOR if you sub you get to unlock the content for the future. If they don't do that here I think it will further fragment the community. I didn't realize until now, hindsight is 20/20, that old SoE team really did a great job of community unity.
Anyway, I love the game. My conjy is level 27 and rolling through in Butcherblock with Gonok the Archon at his side, and Blasty his fire mage summon.
They already did try to sell access packs to their last big content update (Rum Cellar), and the blowback was REALLY bad. I'm going to guess that they're changing gears because of that. Can't say I blame them.
You know what would be nice? If they just made it sub only greatly simplifying the model and just let the players focus on playing the game rather than trying to understand the payment model. Those are the days I miss, everybody pays the same and everybody is playing on the same field.
