The future of MMOs are non-MMOs?

nariusseldonnariusseldon Member EpicPosts: 27,775
http://justforcrits.com/the-future-of-mmos/

and I quote:

"Perhaps it is natural for MMOs to die off. There’s one problem with this idea, though, and that is the fact that MMOs aren’t dying – they’ve just changed. Wilhelm and I may automatically think of MMOs as WoW, Eve, Everquest, SW:TOR and the like – but honestly, those aren’t the only MMOs out there. You might think that there have been no truly successful MMOs launched since 2004, but I know at least a couple titles that would disagree."

"Destiny, for one. The Division, for another. It isn’t that MMOs are dying, it’s that the concepts that made MMOs revolutionary and distinct from all other gaming experiences in the days of 2003 and 2004 are now bread and butter for the gaming industry as a whole. Persistent progression for characters, always-online requirements, levels, loot, dungeons and bosses and raids? All those things exist in varying forms and ways in a half dozen AAA titles at this point."

"Sure, you know and I know and every blogger knows what you mean when you say ‘MMO’, but honestly we’re just the old fogies holding onto old definitions that are being constantly undermined by progress and innovation."

by his definition Neverwinter Nights 1 from 2002 is an MMO. so its kind hard to say its 'changing' into what existed many years ago but was called something different at the time

so is 7 days to die for that matter, and Rust

oh its going to get fun.

our daily re-definition of an MMO will likely end today with 'private servers dont count because of .....reasons..'

No matter how drastic mmos change, they will always have the same weakness. They can shut down any day and you can lose all your money.

The likely future of themepark MMOs based on personal story will be small scale MMOs.  They will have the coop of those MMO without the framework and restrictions of being an actual a MMO.

MMO is the just delivery mechanism. Same as Single player (SPG), multiplayer (MP) co-op (co-op I guess lol).

The genre is FPS, RPG, RTS and the like.

The problem here is people confusing the delivery mechanism with the genre and trying to talk about a genre using the delivery mechanism.

    WOW in an MMORPG.
The Division is a MPFPS. (although from playing it myself it is more like a SPFPS).

The future of MMORPG's is MMORPG's.

The future of online games is almost limitless though...

I think I'll continue holding the line on what an MMORPG is vs what isnt.

It gives me a smug sense of satisfaction to know I'm smarter than most.

Tree Of Savior is the future, and FFXI Mobile. These recycled crapfest games now need to die off.

Narius gets great mileage out of provoking the MMORPG crowd.

Some might even describe it as trolling... but it's very carefully disguised as "discussion".

for this topic .. it is not very carefully framed as discussing an article from a website. I mean .. it is what it is .. an article from a website.

Sure, it may hold opinions opposed to some here, but hey ... you don't think we should only read articles that agree with us, do you?

You mean a SUCCESSFUL RPG shooter that you don't like, but like by many?

surely not paid to say that regarding a system that is basically Fallout 4 online (RPG + shooter + online)

Fallout 4 online (RPG + shooter + online) will probably be much more fun (to the masses) than most "proper" MMOs.

In fact, isn't Borderland 1 & 2 kind of like that? Those are very successful games too. May be the marginalization of "proper" MMO starts right then.

    I have no idea
nor do I have any idea what your point is

what does more fun or less fun of a 'proper' MMO have to do with the standard understanding of what an MMO is?

I think a motorcycle is more fun then a car, does that then mean a motorcycle should now be called a car?

almost as good as 'being online is not really an important aspect of an MMO'
