Small clarification: I admire your enthusiasm Violette but there is even more good news depending on how you look at it. Second Life accounts have always been "fee". There is a 14 day free trial, but after that you pay 10 bucks for the game and there are no monthly fees no matter when you sign up. One catch: If you want any money or land you will have to pay lots, and the game isn't all that interesting when your wardrobe, animations, items, pets, effects, attachments and your avatar itself all come from the junkyard or you do without. Not to mention living in the street.

Yes Violette, free is good, but the picture is bigger then that. If you want the full dose of this one people, you will have to pay... a lot .. every month. It is addicting and you will doubtless want to induldge in the good virtual life so bust out those credit cards!

I see what you're saying, LiteLucidity... I spent a year in Second Life on bread and water, so to speak. Only now I decided to pay the $10/month fee. I'd be crazy to go over that. Yes, I get a small plot of land (512 sq meters), with an excruciating prim limit (everything in SL is made of prims, for example a table could be made out of 4) which is 117. So yes, I'm a little unsatisifed.... BUT!! The trick is :
    1. Thanks to $10 a month, I get a $500 stipend a week.
    2. There are a LOT of apartments in SL. Some of them have a prim limit of 400 or more per apartment. For about $200-300 a week. Therefore you can rent an apartment with much more space and prim limit of your land without having to pay more money. 3. You can still lease your land to a trustworthy person, and charge them for it.
LOL, Sorry I went over the top here. I just wanted to explain to you and others that there are many ways of going about this. =)

True Violette, you can get by on the game with just 10 bucks a month if you are very very frugile. But the free account is really a joke. I wanted to build a decent house and have some decent stuff in it so with the prim limit in mind I needed a decent sice peice of land and some money. First I dropped $120 bucks at the open gaming market to get a few linden dollars (very few really) Then I was paying 85 bucks a month for land and i still needed more to set it up the way i wanted. Did you know it costs $1,300 to set up an island or full sim? After that its $200 bucks a month. Yes.. that US dollars!

If you are a creative person you can make money in this game and if you are not that creative, you can still make money by going to contests. I just won 500l in a contest today and 350l in one yesterday. For the one I won the 500 for all I did was upload an american flag and make a pair of boxers out of them and prance around in my american flag boxers. Cost me 10l to make them.

With a basic account you can utilise the 3d modelling, script writing, hanging out being a goof part of the game. With a little trying you can get money to buy clothes and there is tons of free shit all over the place.

If you want to go the easy route you can buy around 5000l for 20 bucks, get yourself a really nice skin and clothes and rent an apartment to build stuff in. If you want to own a decent plot, you can something like 14 bucks a month and buy yourself a 1024 plot that will allow enough prims to build yourself a snazzy little place to do naughty things in or have a store. I personally dont have a need for a home or store, so I just have the basic account.

What was your stipend with basic account with bonus?

Bravo puff.. I agree with everything you said. If you want to do the grind and be creative you can get around in SL without paying the big bucks. But 500 here and 350 there wont get it either. To own that 1024 meter plot you speak of is an additianal 15 bucks a month, so thats 25 total. Now you have to buy a house for it.. or build one and that takes skill and time... and you have to furnish and buy those special toys. Good toys can cost 5,000 lindens each. So again, for the avaerage user who wants a decent experience, plan to spend over a hundred up front (120 bucks gets you 30,000 lindens) and at least 40 bucks a month OR plan to take lots of lessons, learn the skills and the linden programming language, be prepared to live on a small plot in a small house with crappy toys and get ready to prance around in your underwear as our friend Puff has cleverly decided to do.

Having said that, over time I did manage to generate a posative real dollar cash flow in the game through clever enevours that peeked my interest. Linden Labs did not like that and an "error" occured erasing much of my money and all but all of my cash flow... no compensation was offered. More power to you Puff. Personally, I work 60 hours a week and have no interest in turning my "Second Life" into a "Second Job". For me and many users its a distraction, I don't dance for my drinks when I go to a club and I am not prepared to do it online either.

Shandril - The basic stipend is 50 lindens a week. Bonus is usually nothing or a fraction of that. You can get cheap t-shirt for that. For the 10 bucks a month you get 500 a week, that still means you need to buy more lindens to get anything really worth having.

it seams there was a missing part to my post lol, wanted to add that bonus can relly be good and it not hard to have a good bonus for exemple i had  a 800 L$ stipend last 2 weeks with a basic account. It dont seams to go higher then that no matter what i do tough.

Also for someone that get to pay the monthy fee and stay with minimum land size the stipend can almost pay back for the fee if you dont spend the money considering that 1000L$ can be sold for about 4 usd$, actualy for someone that pay for a full year directly its 6 usd  per month istead of 10 so yhea the stipend pay back completly lol but usualy if you buy land and all you will probably spend the money.

I personaly prefer to stay with basic account  at least for now because I would not have much to do with a piece of land Since:

    1. I relly dont need a virtual house(I have already a rl one that i like).
    2. I have not make enough interesting stuff to make a shop and sell them.
    3. Usualy the things i create i dont raelly need them to stay on a piece of land.
    4. I would not relly have time to host event or enything ( i dont really spend that much time in the game).

So for me land is usless and enyway i get paid to creat stuff and have fun in SL so why not image.Im not here for the money tough, Its more because i like the concept behind this virtual universe.

The point is lite that you dont have to have all of that expensive stuff you listed off to play the game and have a good time.

For a whopping total of 10 dollars you can do 3d modelling, script writing and hanging out with people. There are lots of people that give away clothes and there are several places with tons of things that cost $1l.

Yes if you want to buy the biggest house and have a lot of land and the best skins it costs money, but there are lots of people that have been around for quite some time that dont have any of that. They use the free parts of the game for their enjoyment. You can build whatever you want in the sandboxes for free. Talk to anyone you want for free.

Sorry something happend to your stuff, but it doesnt mean that people have to pay those outrageous prices you named off.

I give up, for anyone who wants to make second life a second job have fun. If the rest of it doesnt matter to you either you are much more tolerant that I. Just don't expect to get the full experience out of this one unless you cough up some money every month, you will be dissapointed.. PERIOD!

Happens on every free trial there is that needs a credit card, its for checking if the card is valid. That is also stated on the agreement you approved (which noone ever reads).
