Game industry is in bad place right now. Very bad place.

Even the game that are seemingly making money are barely managing it.

And than there are few gorillas that seemingly suck all the money from majority of people. But the same companies operate with minimum quality , minimum crew , and dirties marketing and monetization strategies possible.

They needed to take some of the damn profit off TERA and put those people to work on a new game .
I'm sure Bluehole Studios takes much of that profit and they are using it to create new games, plural. I think they have at least 2 full fledged MMORPG's they've been working on for a couple of years now. And along with that they've purchased a number of other games and companies in recent years, such as Ginno Games which developed Devilian.

The bigger question is, why didn't EME get publishing rights to Devilian if both Bluehole Ginno and EME are subsidiaries of BHS?! Bluehole Studios created En Masse Entertainment for the sole purpose of publishing BHS's games in NA, yet they haven't given their newest game to EME.

I have a friend who is a construction worker and he complains every time he gets laid off. I keep telling him, "It's seasonal work. What did you expect?"

Game developers fall into the same category as other jobs that have a shelf life. That's common knowledge. If you didn't pay attention and didn't plan for the inevitable, then that's your own fault.

I find it very hard to feel sorry for people who make choices about their career without understanding the implications.

"I want to be a game dev because it's cool!"

Yeah, well good luck with that.
While it's always sad when someone loses a job, I have to agree.

When I was starting out I used to make my living as a musician and teaching guitar. I then realized it was a pain in the neck so changed my day job. Better pay, better benefits. Not as satisfying but my "out of work" activities take care of that.
