So whats wrong with BDO?

CopperfieldCopperfield Member RarePosts: 654
Ive been playing since korean launch off and on.. but it seems there is not much adjustment the game here in the west..

What is wrong with black desert?

- extreme asian high TTK.
asians like it.. western people dont.. i hoped that would adjust it.. maybe they will in time.

- extreme gear depended

gear > level > playerskill.. when valencia is patched.. all chars below 57 are useless because of awakening weopons..( and connected skills @ level 57)

- potion popping

Making a support char like wizard or witch complete useless.. there is simply no change in healing the dmg due to high ttk by these chars..

- basicly no group play ( pvp and pve)
Almost everything can be done solo..( except some bosses) ( there are benifits tho in doing it in group). pvpwise? its a dps fest.

- some crafting in bdo is complete broken due to set prices in auction house
crafting items ( on high level for example) give less silver compared to selling the mats that are needed to craft that item.. ( broken)

What did you find out in bdo that makes no sense?

    Nothing is "wrong" in BDO...

It is different... and it's differences are what make it an EXCELLENT MMO... the best current gen MMO out there....

First of all, sorry for my ignorance, the acronym bugs the hell out of me. WTF is a TTK when you never even introduced it and used it like everybody knows it.

Furthermore while most of the bullets are about as accurate as opinions can be, it really depends on your playing style; for one I really don't bother to fight the big groups in prime location during prime time. It's never been my thing.

And absolutely the auction house is kind of broken there, camping auction house literately makes me realize that if I want something, work for it because silver can't buy everything*. I mean, what can't you farm in the game? I've made boats, wagons, regrade 1-3, and so on.

I think nothing's wrong with BDO. Many people is playing it and now is the better moment for the game as is its peak momentum; let's see what happens when it's not a novelty and newer games come out.

Right now is the most commented game in this site. I would think that the MMO crowd is intensely playing BDO.

I'm trying to convince myself to buy it and play too. What should I do? I still don't know.

If you have the disposable income I personally believe it has something to offer everyone for $30. I don't think the game is for everyone long term but it will give everyone their moneys worth.
No, have to disagree, if action combat isn't your thing don't buy this title, get a 7 day pass from someone and try it 1st.

I was able to tolerate it in games like Tera, but its far beyond even that model IMO.

If thats not a concern, definitely give it go.

I wasn't going to buy this game and had no interest in a Korean MMO. After reading some of the press and being bored with ESO (very little left in the game to do after being my main game for 2 years), I gave it a try.

Im overwealmed at the moment with how much there is to do in the game. I haven't seen a game with this many in depth features since Star Wars Galaxies.

First week of of play has been amazing, though you have to put a little work into understanding the game. Read all the guides at http://blackdesertfoundry.com/list-of-guides and you are in good shape. Also a good read if you want to know about the game systems present in the game.

What at hooked me from login was the massive open world reminiscent of Vanguard and how full of life it is.  This could very well be my next long term game as there is so much to do.

As as for what's wrong with it...

The graphics popping bothered me on the first day, second day I no longer even noticed. Some friends don't even see it at all.  There are annoyances like gender and race locked classes, but nothing that has put me off yet.

Already feel it was worth the purchase price.

Saying that BDO is at it's peak is a huge overstatement..The game launched 1 month ago, you seriously think that it's as popular as on the launch date? Besides mmorpg.com is one of the few sites remaining where people are even still discussing about it. It really makes me laugh when people think that BDO is so succesful, I mean sure it's doing fine, but come on now. Wildstar generated so much hype in the beginning and where is that game now? MMOs are games made for the long run, and not many are capable of competing in the West.

I find "google trends" by far the most accurate analysis when checking how popular a certain game is. Basically if you put other MMOs against WoW on the list you get to see how popular they actually are. On the scale from 0-100 (100 being most popular), this are the results from currently top 5 most popular MMOs of 2016:

    1. WoW - 83
    2. B&S - 30
    3. ESO - 28
    4. FFXIV - 20
    5. BDO - 19

You might think that BDO just launched and surely the score will soon reflect that, but if B&S is any reflection (which was by the way at least 2x more hyped than BDO), then that will definitively not be the case. Here are the results from this week alone (uncomplete 3-9apr.):

    1. WoW - 100
    2. ESO - 33
    3. BDO - 32
    4. FFXIV - 28
    5. B&S - 16

Basically ESO needed only a month to get back to the #2 place, and is looking to finish there for the 3rd year straight, especially with B&S and BDO popularity going down fast. I mean obviously FFXIV is the only competitor to ESO, and even they are far behind. B&S and BDO probably won't finish 2016 in the top 5 most popular MMOs anyway, I can see them fall behind GW2 and SWTOR as well.

Imo Gear is too top heavy and potion spam is just stupid basicly make a macro that drinks a mana and hp potion every 5 seconds and toggle it on and off during Combat mostly PvP combat cause ur gonna be heating them every 5 seconds anyway

I agree with everything the OP said other than the time to kill.  I have no idea what game he is playing when he said that.  However, there is sooooo much more to like about the game, that crying about combat seems kinda minor and pointless.  I think OP is a PvP only person though...too bad for him.

Only thing that is really "wrong" with the game It's not the game itself It's the game engine that sucks.
Texture popins, NPCs and player pop in from thin air at a certain distance from your toon.
Shadows in the tree canopy in broad daylight are flickering, like SSAO aint working as it should , speaking of anti aliasing It's very poor, whatever happens like in good old days you had like 10 different AA options to pick from in option menu.

I do think there are flaws but overall as a crafter and explorer, I find it pretty fun.  I haven't played an MMO recently where I've felt overwhelmed with things to do, long and short term goals, etc.   Right now I'm working on expanding my crafting capabilities.  I haven't even moved out of the first two big towns.

It is certainly a very different game and certainly not everyone's cup of tea.  My husband probably won't touch it because he is the guy who loves hopping into instances the moment he logs on.  SWTOR is currently his game of choice for the story and the huge number of flashpoints to run.  BDO would not appeal to him.  For me though....happy to run around, pick flowers, chop down trees, mine my ores, it is a perfect time filler for me.  When I want my story, I merely log onto ESO.

One concern though is the growth of the game.  Not sure if this will be a game that sticks around with a healthy population for some time.   Frankly I haven't done enough reading or research to make an informed opinion.  For now though, I've certainly have gotten my $30 worth.

Just put DOTA 2 against World of Warcraft in Google Trends and see how wrong you are when you try to use it to measure a game's popularity. DOTA 2's constantly having about 400k-900k concurrent players at any given time and even peaking over 1.2 million online players ( http://steamcharts.com/app/570 ) while WoW has peaks of about a million concurrent players for short periods, maybe for hours every second year when an expansion launches and then it drops really fast. Still DOTA 2 as the most popular Steam game has a fraction of Google hits compared to WoW's in Google Trends. Despite Google trends results DOTA 2 is by far more popular than WoW if we consider active player numbers. Google only shows how people search stuff about specific games and sure WoW players use a lot of third party databases not like people who play newer MMOs or other games in general.

I've been playing for 4 days, and I still feel like a clueless noob.  I can't recall the last time I didn't feel like I had a game 90% figured out within a couple of hours, and was subsequently bored once the novelty of new features wore off. I'm still fairly certain there's a lot I've missed already. The closest comparison I can draw would be my initial time in EVE.
Which might be what it does both right and wrong. Some people are looking for a grand adventure where they're the hero. This seems less like that, as barring the black spirit story stuff, you're just another adventurer. Some people are looking for a more complex and complete feeling world to derp around in. BDO comes far closer to scratching that itch then anything I've run across in recent memory.

You don't play the game, or haven't made it past level 40.  Potions are only useable in PvE. In PvP The damage output at 50 plus the potion (there is only a large potion) and cool down, means you get maybe 10 seconds of life or enough time to run away. My Sorc devastated a warrior yesterday in less then 15 seconds ( he was chasing a horse away from me as I was trying to rope it). 1v1 combat will last under the cool down for a potion. Group Combat, I dont really want to think about to be honest.

Gear being top heavy? Meaning what? This I am a bit confused on. Is the game gear dependant? yes, is it easy to get? yes so I don't see the point. I would like to see Crafted being the best IMHO but that remains to be seen.

Nothing wrong with the game. I just don't like it. I'd like it a lot more if they ditched the idea of GvG and sieges in this game, and added a lot more to the PVE. The PVP in this game is a completely unbalanced shitshow that I have zero desire to participate in, and unfortunately to PVP you have to grind very boring, easy PVE.

What do you find unbalancing? The grind isnt as bad as I thought it would be. Until 50 then it slows down a bit.

Depends on what people consider good action combat. I love action combat. LOVE. BDO has terrible combat (thankfully I found that out via guest pass). And so does TERA. I'm starting to get the feeling that a lot of people who play MMO's don't play other games. Especially games with good combat.

There are currently zero MMO's with decent action combat. If someone happens to enjoy BDO's combat, that's fine, but it's a poor example of action combat.

    Games with good action combat:

    Devil May Cry (1, 3, 4)
    Ninja Gaiden (1, 2)
Dark Souls et al (Demon's, 2, Lords of the Fallen)
    Castlevania (SotN, Lords of Shadow)
    Tenchu
    Warframe
    Otogi, Myth of Demons
    Valdis Story
    Ninja Blade
    Shinobi (ps2)

Probably more that I've played and can't remember, I didn't include button mashers like God of War because button mashing might be fun sometimes, but not "good combat".

What is wrong with black desert? - Not sure, can't really find anything wrong per se.

extreme asian high TTK./asians like it.. western people dont.. - Not sure what TTK means (why is it that gamers have to always shorten everything?) but I'm western and I like it. Our servers seem crowded so at least "some" westerners like it.

gear > level > playerskill.. when valencia is patched.. all chars below 57 are useless because of awakening weopons.. Lineage 2 was like this. I'm used to it. Maybe there are western games where low levels have an equal chance against higher levels? I don't really know what that game is. In these types of games you have to progress your character. That's what they are about.

potion popping - if there was "potion popping" I wouldn't have died in catfish twice last night. Got surrounded twice and my potion was on cool down. Taking a "potion" here and there really isn't "popping" now is it? If that is the case then most games seem to have some sort of small heal here and there. Elder Scrolls Online has it! So does Lord of the Rings Online for that matter.

some crafting in bdo is complete broken due to set prices in auction house - I suppose that is what it is. Don't craft items that you can't sell for a profit then. A shame but nothing to be done about it. I suppose if you want to be a pure crafter and sell to others then the planned economy might be stifling.

I am not interested in grinding mobs until I hit the requisite numbers so I can compete in PVP without being killed instantly. I guess I could do something more stimulating than mob grinding like AFK fishing or trading and buy the gear, but then again, I'm eventually going to be stuck grinding mobs to keep up in levels.

I much prefer getting my gear from PVP and I enjoy PVP having it's own progression system. I know lots of people disagree and they can go play BDO. For my tastes, it's just no fun to get completely wrecked until you PVE grind for a long time.

Hmm, well, since the context is "grinding for PvP", it is important to note that awakening weapons come at level 56, and someone with an awaken weapon will probably destroy someone who doesn't have one.

So that's something to consider when saying "The grind isnt as bad as I thought it would be. Until 50 then it slows down a bit."

The only thing I find wrong with it is questionable choices about crafting. For Example: making a bed, a #@$ing BED, requires pieces that are going for over a hundred thousand silver, and before anyone starts in about supply/demand, the prices on the market are fixed. I'm referring to the cost to buy or even make sturdy plywood. I get that beds regen energy but look at it from this point of view: it's a freaking bed. The long and short of it is I gave up on furniture crafting. The materials to make it are more expensive than what the bed would sell for.

Seems to me like you utilized the ability to deduce, you readjusted, and you overcame.  Some players are not as astute as you and are still crafting those beds while you will go on to craft items that are much more profitable.  Good job!
