You can't log into Steam without being bashed over the head with it . . so word will get out.  They have a large userbase.  If Facebook starts pushing the Rift. . well. . they have a larger user base.  No one is likely going to pay $$$ for VR Farmville though so I hope they have something else planned.

Personally I will wait until it is a little more wireless.  I know I could be waiting awhile.

I still fail to understand how these big companies come up with these percentages(37% of all US?) based on surveys taken by only about 2000 people? Am i missing something? all i see is they come up with random numbers and we somehow believe them.

EDIT: not saying the OP is wrong, just dont see how can they pull a 37% of all US from 2000 people's responses....

VR will be a massive flop in my opinion, for many reasons.

I agree. There is no real world statistic that could be made unless every single person was polled. Even the census is way off. All it is good for is a snapshot into what could be rather than what is. Still fun to think about.

    On Topic:
I have a couple of guys at work who play Halo 5,COD 3 and StarWars BattleFront and Forza 6 almost every day. I consider them gamers. They game more than I do they game for hours on end multiple days a week and they have never heard of OR or VIVE. I told them about Battlefront and the VR possibility and neither said they were interested in that. They do not use Steam and play only on console. I have found console gamers seem to be the large percentage that have not heard of it.
Also, the number of console users that have not heard of VR (at least on PS4) will learn about it the hard way as we get closer to the likely upcoming PS4k... an unpleasant surprise.

I know about VR,I simply don't care about it.
I can see how it could have applications for professional or educational/training purposes,
but as a gamer the last thing I need is that monster on my head completely blocking my
view, and making me look like a zombified person lost in the matrix.

    Then they are not gamers.
So knowing about VR makes you a gamer?
No, not knowing about VR makes you not a gamer.  The title of the Post was that only  22% of gamers know about VR, I'm saying the other 78% are not gamers,   they just think they are but they dont count . So 100% of gamers know about VR.
    Strange logic but cheers!
If I pick up a club go to a golf course and wack a view balls around and stumble through 16 holes does that make a "golfer".  Tiger Woods is a golfer are he and I both "golfers".  Or am I just a hack with a golf club.  Am I a logger if I cut down a tree in my back yard down?  Am I a basketball player if I go down to the park and shoot a view hoops?

My mom plays tetris on her iPad but if you ask her if shes a gamer she would tell you no, even she has enough common sense to know the difference.

    But apparently......

You missed the point completely....but back on topic. Cheers!
Nope right on topic, you cant count people as gamers if they are so far out of touch with gaming.  They are more like say taste testers.  Kind of like the over use of the term nerd that now has no meaning to who a true nerd is.  Buying a roomba and a drone doesn't make you a nerd.

There is a huge difference between a gamer and someone who simply plays games.

Actually there is not true topic to get back to.  The original topic has no weight over than to be disproven.  So its open mic night.

It could be cool, but I don't even like wearing a wireless headset for a long time, so I doubt I would want to wear something bigger and heavier on the front of my face.  I would be open to trying a demo, and it would have to be mind blowing to put up with the annoyance for me.  I think I would probably like it at a later state when it is going to be smaller/lighter and most likely a lot better.

For everyone that thinks this will flop.  Never before has major company pushed VR.  Not only a major company but Sony and Facebook.  Those are more then major companies....   And if you look on steam they are pushing VR software.   The train is coming and you won't be able to stop it.
Yeahhh, and Nintendo was absolutely dominating the console market when the Virtual Boy came out.  Although it sold a respectable 770,000 units, it still flopped.  In fact, just like the Oculus Rift and the HTC and the Playstation VR... it sold out immediately when it came out.  Still flopped.  We'll see.
You have to understand when the virtual boy came out it was around the time that playstation came out.  It was the time where cd's were used for video games instead of game cartrages.  The hype was using cd's for games instead of the oldschool cartrages.  So naturally sony took off and we saw the death of nintendo.  Sony also made it so their games were affordable compared to some of the nintendo games which would run 70$.  Sony made a power play and took nintendo off the gaming map.
Well if you want to go that route, then mobile gaming, which has no case for VR at all, is making console and PC gaming look like ancient history.  It's absolutely dominating the market right when VR is making yet another attempt at being relevant.
You're joking, right? Ever hear of GearVR?  Although I can't be certain, I'd say I am probably far more likely to own a VR headset for my phone before owning one for a PC.  Strange, but true.
I actually agree - I'd more likely to try out the McVR from a Happy Meal than I would be to shuck out $800 for a Vive.
So... you're planning to travel to the Scandinavian peninsula?  That's where it's being released.  May I recommend Sognefjord?

Here are the reasons why I think VR will be a massive flop:
When I come home from work I want to relax, I don't want to stand up and move around for hours.  I don't want to move my head around giving myself wiplash as if I'm being chased by a man eating lion.  It's not relaxing and it's not something that you can do for 3-5 hours without it being a chore long term.

Also as someone else said it makes you a zombie, when I play the most engrossing game available now or waste 10 hours at the weekend on an mmo I'm still free to multitask...I can still talk and look at my family/friends while I play, I can still look at the TV, watch a movie on Netflix, I can still watch youtube videos, I can still talk on the phone/text or post on this forum.  VR totally refuses to let you enjoy other things while you play your game, it's way too restrictive and with how we have learned to be in modern society that's not going to fly.

It's just too restrictive and too much of a pita to use.  It's fun for a while but once the novelty wears you'll be like...meh I'll just leave the VR on the table and play with my monitor and mouse today, then the next day you do the same and so on and on it goes.

and still lot´s of people hit the gym after work and love it.

We know why it is a flop for YOU... but that does not equal everyone. In fact VR might bring in a new subset of gamers that think that traditional gaming is to passive. =)

But as mentioned we might be a generation or two away from mass appeal.

This have been a good conversation

Going to the gym has a reason (to get fit or buff up) and isn't anywhere as long winded as most peoples gaming sessions.  Exercise with VR does nothing for fitness or buffing you up, it's just a chore once the novelty wears off.

I know how people are, very much as with a new MMORPG they don't see reality and just see flash and stars.  People thought GW2 would be the biggest mmorpg ever launched and it was impossible to dissuade them that mindset, they genuinely thought it would kill wow and that they would be playing it for years.  Most of those people quit in 6 months..so yeah I know most won't accept it for 6+ months after they get it but still, VR will be a big flop for most gamers.

Agreed. Gaming maybe where this is trying to enter the market but gaming will take a back seat to education and industry if it catches on at all.
Honestly, I struggle to see its 'strong' use in education or in industry. I am rather familar with industrial 3d modeling from younger profession and having your machine design in 3D on a screen really has everything you need from a productivity standpoint.

What VR brings to the table is not better productivity tools but a better experience. This is why VR is going to be more popular for movies, tv, social and gaming, not production

you want to know what the very first thing I thought of when I read that 1/2 sentence?

I would want to put on a headset, lie in bed and watch a movie while my back relaxes.

VR has many uses, sitdown at a desk, run around a 15 foot room, or lay down in any position and watch a movie in a larger video screen then you have ever seen in your entire life while in bed or on the couch

Is this counting "gamers" who have only ever played Solitaire and Minesweeper?  How about "gamers" who are only vaguely aware that there are non-Facebook games?

It is worse than that.  If you bought a 99 cent game on an iphone for your kid to play, then you count as a gamer.
