Who cares what the hell it is. It is more like a bridge between themepark and sandbox but it is not for everyone that just is into playing it like Wow.
What game do you like Holden Hamlet? I see you on every BDO post shit talking the game.
He wants to play BDO, but despises the cash shop. Which is pretty much why he pops into every thread about the game to complain how expensive and overpriced it is.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
After experiencing the one full true to the core sandbox MMO that exists (Second Life) ppl are usually happy with the themeparks with various degrees of sandboxy elements.

The term sandbox has been diluted, even though it's never been officially defined, within the genre.
Sandbox has come to mean non-linear progression these days. By this definition, just about every MMO can be a "sandbox", including WoW. There is non-linear leveling in almost all MMO's. Not just in leveling either, but also non-linear progression in crafting, pvp ranks, etc.
Personally, a sandbox to me, is a virtual environment that let's you build and customize the environment around you. I would say that Trove, Minecraft, and Landmark are sandboxes, but titles such as NWN, EQ2, Archeage have some sandbox elements in them also, since you can build your dungeons or plant some crops, etc.
