970 gtx will last you probably a good 2-3 years with everything running at max or near max settings. The main games that really push graphics now are Tripple As for the most part, which are also on console so it holds back alot of them from really pushing hardware since a lot of developers want "console parity". (The console hardware is already about a decade old in the newer systems) MMOs generally don't have very stable engines anyways / run heavily on CPU.
Current indicators is that the new NVidia cards (pascal) are probably 6 months or more out.
Personally what I would look at is, are there any games you want to play and either can't play or can't play at the level you would like?
If so, grab a 970, its a great card and will be fine.
If, realistically, everything you're playing is running at least "ok" (maybe annoying slow, but not unplayably slow). Then you may be better holding off. Pascal is making some pretty major leaps, particularly in clockspeeds, so there's a good chance it's going to be significantly faster than the 9xx series cards.

I bought an MSI GTX970 so that I could play games on triple 1080p monitors and so far it has been fantastic. I was able to play Witcher 3 on three monitors with graphics settings at near ultra with just a couple of minor tweaks for performance.
Most other games aren't nearly as taxing so I'm happy with my purchase.
It should last for a very long time. I have a sad gtx 460 on the low end of the chart, but I'm still able to play most stuff.
You can see the top cards have almost double the performance of most of the cards. It's going to be awhile before everyone (including me) is caught up to that level of performance and Devs aren't going to be making games people can't play.
Still rocking my GTX 480 It plays everything I play just fine, I'll upgrade when CU or Pantheon comes out, if I need to...
Lol @ 1080p with 970. That card should run 1440p instead. If you want 1080p, 960 or 380 is more than enough.
I'm still using my gtx 970, still smokes every game ive thrown at it. had it for a couple years now great card. Get the Geforce model not the offbrands there is no substitute.

Really depends on what you expect to do. I run a 780 and doing all fine with all games. Won't upgrade until Star Citizen releases or around that time at least.
This will depend solely on personal prefs. I, for instance, don't care about running most games on maximum or even high settings. As such, I ran my old GTX 480 for like 5 years before upgrading to a 970. I imagine I will probably stick with this card for no less than 3 or 4 years. Maybe grab a second one on sale or craigslist and run SLI, but not buying any new cards.

it last as long as u only play 1080P with upcoming games that requires even more at 1k resolution.
i would say max 3 more years with 970 before it gets outdated like badly. Since games requires a ton of Vram and Gpu power and with the Upcoming HBM 2 on nvidia side games will be able to do even more rendering and other things without running out of memory
Have had a 970 for about a year now and no complaints @1080p.
I'm planning on ascending to 21:9 + 1440p soon, which will require more than the 970 is capable of, but i may wait a bit on Pascal. I don't see a point in upgrading to a 980ti right now with new cards around the corner.
I have the 970 and an i5-3570K. I cannot play BDO on ultra and have to set it to medium to get decent framerate (although it is installed on my magnetic hard disk drive so that might be hitting performance somewhat).
If you have the money I would definitely grab the 980ti, it seems to be much more powerful (I will be upgrading soon).
Hmm you should really wait. Last I heard the 9xx series have architectural limitation when it comes to DirectX12/Vulkan and most nVidia fans will cry out in horror once these games start to pop out. It was something with AsyncCompute, last I heard they were emulating it and thus lowering FPS. I'm sure there are far more knowledgeable people than me to confirm/deny this but it's literally in almost every nvidia-vs-amd benchmark topic. Currently nVidia has a worse driver.

Its a great card.. it will still last awhile. 3 systems 980,980TI and 970.. 970 has no problems running everything.. nothing to upgrade to right now. Yet if you have a old cpu blah blah blah .. a newer card will not do much. So if a new AMD/NV came out would I upgrade it? Nope. There is nothing out there it cant run...now

What resolution you have when you play matters more then anything... If you running 1080P or lower a card will last longer then if you use 2K or 4K. Also what FPS you can stand is a major issue.
The games also matter, anything with many players on the screen and a lot of effects hurt performance pretty badly. A lot of people are talking about seeing a slidehow in GW2s massive content for example while my clocked 780 card gives me 35+ FPS (and I feel it is getting a bit old by now).
But sure, if you get 60 FPS maxing out the Witcher 3 with your card at your resolution you certainly have no need to upgrade. I kinda doubt that though unless you run 1360 x 768 or something similar.
Exactly how long a card will last you depends on many factors and ultimately are you the only judge. Still, you are 3 generations after and OP is 4. A lot have happened since then.

On average a video card will last longer then you want it to. Which means you will want to upgrade before it wears
on average:
1 1/2 years for a hard core Tech gamers
3 years for a 'gamer'
3+ years for a casual gamer
