Last weekend, we reported that gender and race (among other factors) would be randomly assigned to Rust players on starting the game all based on the string of numbers and letters of one's Steam ID. The discussion on the 'Net has been interesting to watch with many agreeing with the decision, others not so much.

Man, the number of people who are bringing political ideologies into this as well as being overtly racist/sexist is hilarious.

All while the game continues to be performing extremely well on Steam despite peoples claims time and time again that these types of changes will kill it.

First of all, Mr. Newman is a male. Secondly, he said, if you'd read the article, that female Rust players were less bothered by the whole thing.

To quote the article:

"Our female players seem more pragmatic. They point out that they’ve already being play Rust as men for the past two years. Some have got in touch to thank us. Mostly they see it as no big deal."

Still think he's a prat. Partially as one of his responses I read somewhat contradicts some of his points in here. Namely the assigning gender in a game not real life. Funny thing is on the original announcement he more or less as I can't remember the exact wording stated that we can't choose gender in real life so might as well be like that in game.

The article didn't sound anything like that at all. It was more like "this is the way it is and these are our reasons."

It's worked before, it's still working and there was no reason to suddenly force them to play a certain gender, just..you know cause.  what's the point in forcibly assigning genders if you could simply add a female button to the character creation and be done with it.  I don't play Rust so if there was some kind of lore reason or mechanic or if they simply needed people to play female characters to fill out the ranks then maybe sure, but this just seems to be there because they can. This seems like a unnecessarily complicated solution that makes people mad when there's a much simpler option that will make everyone happy.

Take Chronicles of Elyria (yes I'm inserting this, trust me it's on topic) for example, they can let you choose a premade character which will be assigned male or female based on the character. This is done because you are taking over an NPC and thus it was already in motion, you just gained control of it for that life.  It makes sense but you don't have to, as you can make a ward and choose whatever. Also you get a list of those NPCs from which you can choose to take over so you aren't really forced into a gender there.

Forget Feminism or whatever, this simply is just complicated and makes something worse for reasons I can't see why when a simpler solution already exists that makes everyone happy.

This genre of game is great for role playing. It's kinda weird when you meet a player and he pushes to talk and then a male voice comes out of a female character...
Are players going to have to use voice changers ?

There's no logic to Garry's argument, given his goal of making a player's outward appearance fixed. Players should always have a choice on things that matter to them. This boils down to dumb game design by a clueless game designer.

Gary has always been this way, random things he changes and later changes them again. I would not hold any weight that he will not change it back as he often goes back on what he changes, everyone for the most part that I have played rust with has at sometime complained about the way garry changes things for the worse and leaves those changes in game for far too long before fixing it up.

But then again, who gives a shite about what the paying customer would like eh. Your voices are not welcome if this is really how someone as a developer is thinking.

I can understand single player titles that force you into a particular sex based on the story of the game. I can not however condone multiple player titles or MMO titles doing the same thing. Even less so if their focus is based on role playing. People want to look, feel, act, dress as they please. Hes a darn fool. Period.

Won't play a gender locked game out of principle. Don't mind when it's tomb raider and for a reason but this is dumb. Cross this game off my list.

Wow, it's so easy to tell the people that have never played the game before. Why are people acting like this is some new thing? It's been this way since for well over a year, the only difference is now they finished the female models and added them to the game. Everyone who plays knows this is how it is and isn't going to change.

The game has sold millions of copies and has been among the best selling games on steam continually for 3 years, a bunch of people who don't play, crying about it now isn't going to change anything.

I think it's worse than "gender locking'.

At least in games where there is gender locking you can just bite the bullet and play a gender you want even if it's a class you don't want. Meaning, you have the choice of gender though you will have to put up with the class that comes with it.

But in this case they are just assigning you gender straight out.

This is why FPS games will never evolve within their genre. The developers refuse to change. They were evolving slowly by adding more RPG elements in recent years, but stuff like this will always hold them back.

The same is happening to the MMO genre too. The devs refuse to evolve beyond their basic formulas. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying they have to make radical changes to their respective genres, but if they want to attract more players, they will need to expand on more features.
