WoW was made by ex EQ players who didn't like the direction the game was going.
EQ came out in 1999, WoW in 2004.  So the longest their development could take would have been 5 years, MMOS these days take that long or longer to build.
Wildstar took 9 years to fail as hard as it did.
Indeed, Wow was pinched in '99 by the Warcraft 3 team. When they showed their initial work the board of directors started out with a binder of stuff they wanted included but it upset the team so much that the leading people quit and started ANET. Then Morhaime hired ina EQ guildbuddy as lead developer, Kaplan (the biggest hail Mary in MMORPG history, Kaplan had no experience but was a genius) and the rest is history.

So the earliest ideas was in '99 but they did start full out in early '00 making the effective development time of about 5 years. And your math is wrong BTW. 99-04 is actually 6 years since Wow released november 04.

But Blizzard can of course afford that long time, heck, Diablo 3 had way longer development time even if they scrapped it and started over more than once. I think there will eventually be a Wow 2, we are talking Blizzard here who loves sequels and the game that gave them more money then anything else. But they wont bother starting on it until Wows numbers are below 2 million players.

Not even close, WoW will always be limited by their current engine, and an expansion will never be WoW 2.
It has to be rewritten from the ground up if we want to call it a sequel.
Really? I must have missed the Memo

"So let it be written, So let it be done"
Calling an expansion a sequel is just silly, that would make EQ EQ twentysomething and EQ2 EQ thirtysomething..

But the engine have little to do with it, as long as you keep your same characters and their stuff it is Wow, not a sequel.

They really need a new IP and take the Vanilla TBC formula to that new IP and create an MMO Out of it.  Maybe they should kind of make an IP from Dungeons and Dragons and Final Fantasy.  You know Red Mages that have skills between White and Black Mages.  Dark Knights that do massive amounts of damage using the dark arts.  Each Class has its own role and no Black Mages that play like a White Mage, or a Fighter who plays like a mage.

I dunno, I think they would have to do more than so, that would have to evolve it more then just using the vanilla forula but in a different direction then the expansions.

As for D&D Wows world is kinda a mix between the Warhammer world (WC12 was originally made to be warhammer) and Forgotten realms. Looking on D&D worlds like Dragonlance and Ravenloft might not be a bad idea, heck, Dragonlance would make an awesome MMO. :pleased:

I think Dragonlance would make a great MMO.  As for the Vanilla formula I am thinking along the lines of, time to level, and instances where you need to use everyones abilities in the group not just group them up and AOE the mobs down.   No LFD/LFR, but today's group finder is good.  Make people be out in the world, yes quick travel in the sense of flying between areas if you got the flight path but no instance travel.  Do make flight paths much closer to the instance and do allow for summoning to help.  require team work to take down content and not min max healing and dps.  Thats what I am saying.

The problem is the formula was abused.  Not sure how you can really spin anything new to the themepark branch.   It's been done to death over the past 12 years.

I am a wow lore fan but even I got sick of it in wow hamster wheel .... CoE is my fresh Breeze

I would play WoW2, for a few months, til I killed everything and got bored. Then I'd play the next new thing.

Yeah I don't think another WoW would be worth the time and effort.

    Time for something completely new.

who are "we"? I don't need WoW nor its sequel. I don't even need mmorpgs. If someone can make a good fun one, i may take a look.

And blizz is already going down a path of making diverse fun games. I would much rather they make different games than rehashing WoW.

I would play a WoW if it had ESO graphics and WoW's usual quality.

Blizzard should buy out the Asheron's Call content, and make an MMO based on their mythology/monsters etc.
Hehe thats not their style but its a darn good idea.

Sadly, Blizzard seems like one of those people who wins a Nobel prize at age 14 and then never does anything noteworthy ever again.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Well, I made this post this morning.

I was ready to defend my post with my dying breath.  I even went out side and dragged trees, branches and rocks into my living room.  Pulled off my pants, went to my closet and got my plastic helmet and club, all ready to defend my post.........After reading all your post.......I have to say the majority of you are right !

Screw Blizzard, nothing good will ever come out of that company again !!!!!!

If they did, it would just be another watered down mess for 10 year olds.

I don't think they will make a WoW 2 anytime soon. They spent a lot of time trying to develop TItan, which was suppose to be a different IP.

    Redsalt... the other salt.

no..why? you mean just roll out another clone of a clone with updated grafix? cuz im guessing 90% that love wow would want everything that the 1st game had..and god help us all if they screw up or mess with the lore..the nerd rage would be felt from NYC to Bangkok lol ..eq was a masterfully done now look at eq2..some games just cant fix what is now either broken or flawed  ...they just fade away like everything else..id also argue that wow rly dont have that many ppl that seriously / play everyday / week or even month..i have tons of friends and spoken with tons of ppl that only play wow every big update or xpan release...all they do is speed thru easy mode cap gear and then log out like if they were a bear getting ready for winter..

WOW is still the best mmorpg ever made and nothing will ever come close to that.  Why make a 2.0 when the one you have is still the best thing going and most awesome game ever played by millions of millions.
Are you onto something or just on something?

    What are you talking about?

    After wow, Blizz has:

    - made D3, which sold 30M boxes, and is highly rated on metacritics
    - made Hearthstone, also a huge success
    - making Overwatch, which looks good so far.

Well that sound interesting Sith Lord  but I would develop your idea

If wow would have  Ark Survival graphics with 4k texture

If classes would be more diversified  5 or 6 different possible builds for each class with different game play

If they would add a PVP map like old gw2 WvW where servers compete for dominance of a huge Territory and it goes on an on
but here Horde vs Alliance Princesses
    For example
Horde server xx vs Alliance server xx

But nothing  good will ever happen to wow....

Blizzard opened the pandora box in their studio and they will keep releasing cheap Fast gratification game for faster cash out .
This is one of those moment I wish I was wrong ....

If they will remove continuous hunt for gear I AM SICK OF IT every single expansion FAP those dungeons FAP those raids for STATS give me a break ......

IDK they're all just labels anyway.

IMHO a WoW expansion is closer to a sequel than let's say... the latest iteration of COD is from the previous iteration.

Here's the main reason you will never see a new MMO out of Blizzard.   The people running Blizzard today are not the people that created WOW.  I have family that worked for Blizzard and it isn't the same company that it started out to be.  So basically you have an entirely new company using Blizzards name, which is what happens all the time in the business world.

The people in charge now have no desire to create another MMO to compete with their cash cow they already have.
