Quite simply having a die shrink will create more demand from Microsoft and Sony. They can use the same processor that consumes less energy, creates less heat, and is cheaper. It might also be related to Microsoft and Sony's plans to release upgraded consoles. My guess is these consoles will be able to do things like produce 60 fps verse 30 fps in the same games. Plus a VR headset maker or Valve making a move for custom built machines is also a possibility.
what games will be driving people to buy these? seems to me that hardware is well ahead of software and VR doesn't look to be changing that.
I don't think people will upgrade their current PS4 / XBox One consoles just for this, but there are always new consoles being bought. By upgrading their PS4 to run all games at 1080p and 60 FPS Sony will gain a large advantage against Microsoft in competition of any future console purchases. I'd say that advantage alone is enough reason for them to upgrade PS4, and Sony's upgrade will force Microsoft also make similar upgrade or lose much of their future console sales.
EDIT: Also, hardware is not well ahead of software. If anything, software is ahead of hardware in consoles at the moment. Many of the modern games don't run at 1080p 60FPS because the hardware is not powerful enough /EDIT
im the only 1 that think that xbox1 and Ps4 were released with handicaps in order to able to sell now a new and improved version?
nintendo has been doing that years....3ds , 3ds XL , NEW 3ds...its gets old every new gen
Nah, they just used cheap hardware, both would have been impossible to sell if they initially cost twice they did due to cutting edge hardware.
Same thing can be said about the brand PCs, with a few exceptions do they have pretty average stuff in them and if you want something really good you usually have to build it yourself. Most people don't want to pay for high end gear and you can sell few expensive or many cheap, since games is the main income you want many to buy your consoles.
We do have seen a few premium consoles in the past and they usually did very poorly even if they were far better then everything else on the market. The strange thing is that cellphones is different, there people don't mind insane prices.

There will be a market for the upgraded consoles I bet. I have been thinking about buying another PS4 for my household, but have held off after hearing of the PS4.5 coming out.
I agree the cell phone craze is strange, some of the same people who will gripe about a new console upgrade will be in line at the apple store buying the new I-phone at $700 only to do it again when the next one comes out 6 months later.

generally speaking the big developers know about these cards being made and generally the new big AAA game releases tend to work in tandem with that. Which explains why one day we have 2 games that require a GTX970 to run recommended and then not but a few weeks laters we get serious hints of new cards coming around the corner. That is a repeatable pattern that has been the same for many many many years
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Microsoft botched the specs on the Xbox One, but the PS4 really was the best that could be done at the time inside of a console-friendly TDP of around 100 W or so. With the greatly improved energy efficiency from a shrink to 14/16 nm, they'll be able to do a lot better now than they could three years ago.
I've been a Radeon gamer my whole life. I like the quality of the Radeon series.
If their processors are as good, I know where I'm going for my next CPU upgrade.

Upgraded consoles. That's hilarious. It's literally taking away the one valid argument consoles had against PC's, in so much as the games were developed for the exact same hardware and therefore the performance could be optimized to that platform and everyone could expect a consistent experience.
Now they're gonna try to nickel and dime console players by selling them "upgraded" consoles? It's almost like DLC for consoles...

If the rumors about the PlayStation 4.5 or whatever you want to call it are true (and I consider them very plausible), then it's basically introducing a new console after three years with perfect backward compatibility and even very good forward compatibility. No one would have expected all PS3 games to run on a PS2, but all PS4.5 games will run on a plain PS4.
Three years is fairly short in console lifetimes, but it's not like they're introducing a new console a mere year after the previous, either. And three years is assuming it launches later this year. Depending on when it launches, we could easily be looking at 3 1/2 years or so.

The point is it smacks of the same type of nickel and diming that day 1 DLC does.
Basically the way I and most people will see it is "well, we screwed the pooch when we initially designed these consoles and sold you underpowered hardware, now, if you want to get the "best" experience, you need to "upgrade" your console and use your old console as a paper weight".
The PRIMARY argument with consoles vs PC's is that since it was all identical hardware, the developers knew exactly what they were working with and could therefore more efficiently and expertly craft the code to fit that hardware instead of trying to make sure it works decently well on a ton of varying hardware. Now we're going to end up in a situation where yes, all of the previously released games run better, but you will start seeing shit like "best experience on PS4.5" on the game box, and while it will hypothetically run on a base PS4, it's going to run, relatively speaking, like shit. The PS4.5 will become the new benchmark that developers will code against, and people with the "old" consoles will just be up shit creek, or have to deal with a less than ideal experience.
At this point they should just have bought a PC.

I agree. I know Microsoft for one has already stated that a shorter console cycle is to be expected. Spencer has said the public will not being waiting another 7 years for a console.
Well from what i remember, the intended lifecycle of the xbox360 and PS3 was never intended to be 10 years, they just milked it out since, why the fuck not? If people keep giving them money for shitty games on shitty consoles. Why bother making new consoles?

People keep upgrading their iphone every time a new model comes out so other business models are looking at that and going hmm.... my friends I mean we are talking about old bitties who cannot even use the iphones they already have properly are buying new models every time they come out. I of course use an android which I have for three years now, will be finally upgrading to a oneplus 2 this summer.

So if 3-4 years is too short, and 10 years is too long, what's the sweet spot?
Nintendo has been on a run of 5 years between consoles there for a long while. They have the longest track history of the current console manufacturers.
I think 3-4 years may be a bit soon, but since, at least in the case of Sony, it has "perfect" backwards compatibility and provisions to ensure that the current-gen isn't made obsolete, I'll take it.
IMO 5-6 would be ideal for consoles. Personally I don't buy consoles anymore, but for console people 10 is def too long, and judging by comments on the internets, 3-4 is def too short.

It's just a way to nickle and dime those that want the newest toys, just like how people that buy the newest cell phone get nickle and dimed and say thank you for it.
Consider though that not everyone follows this trend...I don't even have a cell phone and I know quite a few others that don't either just like I know plenty that do. It all depends on what you use your cell phone for and if your into having the newest gimmick RIGHT NOW!

Imagine, AMD goes to the PS4 folks and says "We can make the same chip in 14/16nm that you have now at 28nm. It will run a lot faster, require a lot less power, and generate a lot less heat."
You think Sony is going to say no? They get a better playstation, cheaper. Smaller power supply, fewer and smaller fans. Of course they are going to want it.
