Whats FFXI like compeard to WoW?

ZaylZayl Member Posts: 25

I am curently playing WoW, but something is bothering me about the game, can realy put my finger on it tho. But one thing is that wow laks character costimation, like all rouges are the same, all palladins are the same and so on, espesialy in the latest lvls when all is wearing the same type of armor that u have colected from some hige lvl raid instace. so i was thinking of begining to play FF instead, i have been reading some stuff on a web page abaout u can have multipel classes/jobs on one character and change them if u dont like it this sounds to me like a good system, can somone cear to explain a litle more?
how abaout races and apperance? is there some epic armor set all is colecting in the latest lvl's?
the community, how is it? is there one thing realy hate is people spamming others whit n00b if there is made a error or simmelar, something that i have seen acure on WoW plenty of times.
and one last thing, is there a extra fee for every new character u make?

I hope somone will take the time to answer my post.

You can change jobs freely with one character. This is done at your player's home ("mog house"). Experience for each job is tracked separately; you start each job at level 1, with 0 exp. When you switch back to a job you had earlier, you pick up where you left off. At level 18 you can complete a quest to have support job ("subjob"). You then select a second job to be your subjob. This job will be whatever level you levelled that job to, with a cap of half your main job's level, rounded down. The subjob does not get experience. Only you main job does; if you want to level your subjob, you'll have to make it your main job and get experience in that configuration. The subjob provides: stat boosts from that job/level and all the abilities and spells of that job level except your "two hour" (super-powerful emergency ability that has a real-life two-hour cooldown timer). It does not allow you access to the equipment that the subjob would allow you if it were your main job. This allows some customization, but the hard fact is that a lot of main job/subjob combos don't make sense. A mage main job almost always takes a mage subjob, and mage subjobs always go to mage main jobs, because a mage needs a mana point pool as large as possible, and only mage subjobs give you more MPs. And a non-mage with a mage subjob generally has an MP pool that allows him to cast maybe two spells. Two *small* spells. Still, it's an interesting facet of the game.

There are five races. Unfortunately, appearance selection is, if anything, even more limited than in WoW. There are important armor sets you'll generally want to go out and collect; while there's some selection in armor, there does seem to be cases where if you're this level/class, you *will* wear this.

I've seen relatively little namecalling; most experienced players seem more than willing to teach those who are willing to learn. Yes, there's an extra fee for each character: $1/month for each after the first. However, I will point out three things: one, since you can change jobs freely, there's less reason to have a number of characters than on WoW. You want to try being a warrior for a while? Fine, go to your mog house and become one. Second, the base price for FFXI is less than WoW. So you have to have several characters before it even costs what WoW was costing you. Three, you actually buy slots for characters rather than the characters themselves, so if you have three characters and want another one, you can delete one and make another and save yourself the worry of buying another character slot ("Content ID") that way.

You have to buy the game and be able to give PlayOnline a valid Visa or Mastercard. However, the game is only $20 for the PC these days (PS2 is still $100 because you get an actual hard disk drive unit included). First 30 days is free.

The jobs are better than WoW's. The customization is alot worse. Also, you are sort of limited on armor, since armor is job specific, unlike WoW's cloth/leather/mail/plate system.

First off i'd best say that i only played ffxi for 2 weeks, and wow for a few months, the most obvious difference is the graphics, although wow is a very 'cartoony' game, graphically it looks a lot better, char generation is better too, in ffxi you have a choice of 8 faces and 2 hair colours. wow emotes, are pretty good, and the first time you hear the dwarf jokes you can't help but laugh, although after a few dozen times the novelty definitely wears off, (was it billy connoly that did the voice emotes for those? he's the person i most associate with 'scottish' toilet humour etc). ffxi is i think an older game, but in comparison its more on a par with the original everquest imo, which isnt necessarily a bad thing, as the original everquest was actually very popular (lot of people still play it to this day!).  in terms of gameplay theres not a huge difference between the 2 games, although wow's user interface is definitely a lot more intuitive than the ffxi one, although this could be due to the problems porting a console game onto the pc, though once you get used to using the keyboard for almost everything in ffxi, it does become easier. on another note, if you are able to speak japanese, then you will definitely fare better in ffxi than otherwise.

have to agree about the degree of char customisations for both games, few games approach the same degree of customisation as either city of heroes or starwars galaxies, im hoping however that dungeons and dragons online will bring that degree of customisation to the fantasy mmolg genre image

The 2 things I see that most seperate the games are:

    1. Solo/PvP Oriented Gameplay vs. Party Oriented Gameplay
In WoW, the only reason to party is to do an instance or to raid a town/capital. Otherwise, you can solo your 60(which is why there are so many high lvl players in the game). In FFXI, The game is party based, and you are having to party by lvl 10. For that reason, lvling is much slower than WoW.

    2. Character Customization.
In WoW, you character will grow up to be the same as just about everyone else in you class. The talent system is a good idea, but for most classes there is only one truely benificial path to take with a few talents taken here and there from the other branches(i.e A priest is Most likely going to go down the holy path. There are a few Shadow priest but not many). Ability wise, though there are far more abilities in WoW, you have to keep in mind that everyone else with the same class as you have those same abilites. In FFXI, a character doesnt get quite as many abilities as in WoW untill later lvls. In FFXI tho, with the ability to learn different weapon skills, and with the ability to have 2 jobs, there is a smaller chance of finding people with the same exact abilities as you.

Each game has something over the other, and imo they r both great games. I think it really just depends on you play style

A sign of the Wave comes.
Riding the Wave is: Skeith, the Shadow of Death,
    to drown all that stands.
    Mirage of Deceit, Innis,
Betray all with the flawed image,
    and did aid the Wave.
And by the Power of Magus,
a drop from the Wave doth reach the heavens,
    and creates a new Wave.

If you want a really good server to be on try for Ragnarok, has alot of NA players who are more than willing to help out the newbies. You can ask for a worldpass on various FFXI Forum sites.

FFXI is definitly different then WoW, but their all mmo's and yes I love WoW's graphix over FFXI. The only thng is, that FFXI makes an addictio that WoW doesnt seem to have, i swear its like crack, I can't stop playing so everyone, who hasnt played this yet, please take that into concideration. This is by far the most difficult game to quit.image I can't stop but when my subscription runs out im selling the disc.s so I wont be temted anymore >_< lol. and the reason why im quiting is because I play way to much videogames and im not living life to the fullest anymore, so Im gunna quit this game.

Reguarding the original topic. I felt the same way, after playing WoW to lv 16 i started feeling a sense of discomfort. I later realized I was suffering from Mission Syndrome, combined with Grind Fatigue, and party betrayers. Also RO does have a great community (I'm one of thsoe vets who play it)

  • go with FFXI.  I felt the sameway with WoW and got sick of the game.  Sidetracked from FFXI for 2 months but came back crying saying "I will never leave you again"
